FiveThirtyEight (great site, especially if you like stats) has a break down on the Star Wars movies.

This is the one I find most surprising:

Ten percent rate the Phantom Menace as the best movie? Now that some time has passed, I don't think I know one person who liked it. At the time there were people who enjoyed it, but I think that was mainly because they were in denial after being disappointed. Although I despised all 3 of the prequels, I also thought they got a bit better with each passing movie. Are you, or someone you know, in that 10%?

Interesting article with a few more charts at the link above.

The only thing I think about when I remember Phantom Menace is that stupid kid yelling "yipppeeee!!" - I don't think I ever got over that.  Well, that and Jar Jar.

I guess the Phantom Menace doesn't surprise me too much.  The younger generation that had no previous tie to Star Wars had really no concept of how terrible the prequels were in comparison.  If the prequels are your introduction to the universe then that's probably the baseline for how you judge everything from then on.

Those poor kids, their parents failed them.

I get the impression that a lot of kids love The Phantom Menace more than the other movies, so this poll doesn't exactly surprise me. It's hard to understand for us old geezers though. *shakes fist*

There are several reasons for this:
1. Kids were included in the mix and The Phantom Menace was the most kid-friendly.  It had Jar Jar and the bad guys were bumbling robots saying "Roger, Roger."  Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back had stormtroopers and Darth Vader.  Return of the Jedi was where it started to get silly again, with Ewoks and everything related to Jabba's palace.
2. There are people that have seen all six movies but never really got into them.  They might have said The Phantom Menace just because it was the first one they saw and looked more polished than the other ones.
3. They didn't limit it to 30-50 year old Star Wars fans.  We know what's what.

Or as Douglas Adams might say:

Quote
“I've come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to movies:
1. Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.
2. Anything that's filmed between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary.
3. Anything filmed after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things.”

Revenge of the Sith was the only one of the new movies that had any substance to it.

I think after I saw it, I thought it was the best of the franchise..but upon seeing again (if I did, I feel like I did) I didn't like it that much.  Not sure what I feel now as it has been so long since I've seen any of them.

I'm afraid at this stage I won't find any of them that great.

The folks in my circles that are really into Star Wars -regularly read the fiction or play the tabletop RPG or miniatures game- while disliking the 1st movie absolutely loved the pod racing. I'm guessing that aspect of it might have helped it to score higher than the other prequel films - hey, if you haven't viewed any of the prequels for a while that might be the most memorable moment. Personally I liked  IV through VI equally and felt the III was the best of the prequels.

The Darth Maul fight was decent.  It was fun to see some more advanced saber fighting techniques in the new films, barring the final battle with Obi Wan and Anakin fanning at each other and the whole high ground nonsense.

I'm hoping they continue with more advanced techniques like these.
