I'm guessing 9.5 mil came from the studio purchasing one really expensive ticket to keep the embarrassment to a minimum.

I think this one's gonna bomb harder than 'John Carter'.

And it did: Barely broke $25 mil at the box office this weekend. 'John Carter' made $30.1 mil when it opened.

Hooray, there is still a tiny bit of sanity in this world. 

Michael Bay's still making films so I'm doubtful.

To be fair (I know it's funny coming from a John Carter basher like me), Battleship is doing gangbusters international business, and they're going to have to hope that's enough to break even once marketing costs are thrown in.

Reviews have actually been far kinder to Battleship than for John Carter. I guess that's Taylor Kitsch progress. 

plus it cost lest than John Carter ($209 million vs $250 million), so they have less to make back.  my local theater didn't get it this weekend, but I'm expecting it to be there next weekend (apparently they are usually a week or two behind on new releases because the cost to get them is cheaper after 1-2 weeks) and I'll see it for 4 bucks.

Not sure where you're getting that idea from.  Rottentomatoes and Metacritic both show Battleship at least 10 percent lower than John Carter for critic's reviews.

Battleship's actually made more worldwide than John Carter.  With a smaller budget.  And that's without the benefit of 3D ticket prices.

pr0ner will still insist it was a success, don't worry.

just got this from Amazon and finally got to see it.  if you didn't expect a deep story after those trailers it's actually a fun movie- cheesy, and loud with plenty of 'splosions and some fun music.  definitely one of my better bought before seeing it purchases.

Just watched this and I have to agree with CeeKay. I enjoyed this for the same reasons I enjoyed the Expendables. Sure I can nitpick about how completely wrong the actors use and deploy their small arms weapons, but hey it's a movie.

Just finished watching it.  On the one hand, I agree with Jiffy:

I hated the characters and wanted them all to die horrible fiery deaths. The decisions made are truly stupid.

The main protagonist in particular I absolutely hated.  Plus the overall pacing of the movie was not good.  The spent almost 30 minutes wasted building up the main protagonist's character for about 20-30 minutes with no action making him more and more dislikeable.

On the other hand, I really liked the naval action a lot.  It was fun to see the ships in action.  Once things got rolling, I'd have to agree with CeeKay and USMC Kato.  It was a fun cheesy B-movie.

Ugh, I also hated the main characters, especially the male lead.

It seems like they used every single possible trope to try and make this absolute moron into a likeable underdog, but he's just not. To me, it just read as pandering, the only thing that saved it was that I stopped imagining it as a battleship movie and instead imagined it was Crysis, the movie (which it was if you strip out the Naval Stuff).

Still, pretty fun to see some very well done CG combat, a few friends of mine did the compositing for the film too.
