WHY?!?!? The worst part? This isn't the only Hasbro board game they're turning into a movie!!: Universal has several board game titles in development as part of its six-year deal with Hasbro. "Ouija Board" is being produced by Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes shingle, "Candy Land" has Kevin Lima attached to direct with Etan Cohen writing the script, and Ridley Scott is developing a project based on "Monopoly." WHY?!?!?

I better run out and buy a copy of Battleship before they rerelease it with a movie tie-in box. I want people to know I bought the game because it was cool, and not because I just jumped on the movie bandwagon.

This would only be good if Samuel Jackson is in it. Can picture it now:
"You motherfucker sank my battleship! I'm going to sink you whole damn motherfucking fleet!"
Ironically enough, Monopoly I could see working the best.

well, they've set the release date for July 1st, 2011, with Peter Berg helming it. Berg called the pic "a contemporary story of an international five-ship fleet engaged in a very dynamic, violent and intense battle" -- but he would not disclose any details about the enemy force.

Scene from the big fight:
A shell from the shore rips through the bow of Admiral Guy's PT boat. "Sir! It's a hit! We can't survive another! Orders Sir!" Seaman Brown exclaims. "Sit tight Brown, we're small enough that he might not notice." "Sir! If we can just move forward a little, he can't shoot at the same spot twice sir!" "We can't move! This is our position and we can't back down! There's only a 25% chance that he will land the next shot, and I like those odds." "Sir! The enemy seems to have stopped firing, maybe he has given up sir." "No Brown, this is expected." "Sir, why sir?" "It's not his turn."

So... *Andy Roddick's wife is the new Megan Fox *Taylor Kitsch is the new Shia LaBeouf (!). Presumably the connection is Peter Berg directed several episodes of the Friday Night Lights TV series. While I have no love for the Transformers films, a studio thinking it can just sort of cut and paste that formula at a $200M cost and be guaranteed the same crazy box office results seems, well, expensively naive. It's also releasing two weeks after The Avengers. While it reminds me a little of Battle Los Angeles (which I actually enjoyed), that film only cost $70M. Initially I was going to make some snarky comment about "how does Peter Berg get a $200M budget?" but I forgot about Hancock: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=hancock.htmThough I'd attribute that more to Will Smith than any Peter Berg directing magic. It will be interesting to see if Battleship, and John Carter from Mars (March 9, 2012) turn Kitsch into a star, or just another roadkill in Hollywood's efforts to jam some youngster down our throats as "the new star!" And at some point will we see movies where aliens are our friends again? Aliens as the villain du jour are getting just a bit tiresome imho. There are so many movies and TV shows using them as villains now that I start seeing similarities in the alien FX/makeup, as if there's such a glut, crews don't even know how to make them different anymore. Like "we've run out of ideas!"

So they paid money just so they could call that movie Battleship? Because I find it hard to believe they went to someone with the idea of writing a movie influenced by the boardgame and THAT is what came to mind.

well, the final shot does show the fleets set up in a grid like pattern on a set playing field I have to admit I had hope they might be able to pull off something cool with this, kinda like when they announced they were making the Pirates of the Caribbean ride into a movie, but alas, it looks like they've failed.

Your boardgame doesn't have aliens in it? Well to be honest, I haven't played in a while. Maybe they've spruced up the rules since the 70's version.

Not to mention, take a close look at the shells that the aliens fire. While they aren't colored properly, they look exactly like the pegs from the game.

Berg actually was the primary Executive Producer for FNL, so for that reason alone I'm going to give this movie the benefit of the doubt until reviews start coming in. That and Brooklyn Decker.

I think it's looks possibly interesting, but will need more trailers.... However, it definately did not need a Battleship license.... They could have called it something else.. (Or maybe even Battleship and remove any references to the game).. Anyway could turn out to be a decent popcorn flic...
