I love Batman, but can't get excited for more origin story/year one stuff.  now if they did The Dark Knight Returns I'd be all over it.

The DC Animated division at Warners knocks it out of the park with almost everything they make.  I'm in on day 1.

You reminded me of this recent PVP strip:

I'm a little skeptical a PG-13 animated flick can really be all that true to Miller's and David Mazzucchelli's vision (I do have the Batman: Year One in hardcover compilation form), although it's probably easier to pull that off (I guess it wasn't really that gory/graphic) under PG-13 limits than The Dark Knight Returns.

Just be thankful it's not G and the characters aren't turned into kids.

Wonder why they didn't have Kevin Conroy do the voice?

I didn't realize Bruce Timm (lead guy behind the great animated TV stuff) was behind this:

Batman: Year One Interview With Producer Bruce Timm, Director Lauren Montgomery, and Screen Writer Tab Murphy
http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/GraphicCity/news/?a=40758
He said they'd like to try do one of the books as an R-rated animated production, but their most recent talks on that fell through. It's interesting at the end Timm sort of blows them off when they ask which book they'd like to do as an R-film (probably doesn't want to reveal that unless they really get permission to do it).

As for Conroy, I adore his voice but he's 56 years old now. Asking him to voice-act a young (this is "Year One" afterall) Batman, seems a bit much.

If they try to do The Dark Knight Returns later, then I think he's perfect for that. In fact, sort of like Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven, he would've "aged" perfectly into the role.  icon_cool

Conroy's still doing work in games and such, and talking about Batman at conventions.

If it's and animated movie about a DC character, you may as well just assume Timm is involved...and usually in a large role.  They handed him the keys to that kingdom after he proved himself so spectacularly with the Batman, Superman and JLA animated series.

fwiw, Collider's review of this:
http://collider.com/comic-con-2011-batman-year-one-review/104808/#more-104808
Quote
It may be sacrilegious to say but Batman: Year One could benefit from some slight deviations to the source material to better suit the film medium. As this is not the case – the film doesn’t necessarily stand out or add anything new to Frank Miller’s tale. One would still be better spent rereading the comic.
Which you may well disagree with if you wanted a virtually identical DVD iteration, mind you.  icon_smile
