After the MASTERPIECE that was The House of the Dead, why not greenlight another gun game?  What idiot thought this was a good idea?  At least Street Fighter had something resembling a plot....ugh

Paramount Pictures Announces Agreement to Acquire Worldwide Film Rights to Midway Games' Action-Thriller ''AREA 51''

HOLLYWOOD-Aug. 31, 2004--Paramount Pictures has reached an agreement to acquire the worldwide film rights to Midway Games' (NYSE: MWY) "AREA 51," a state-of-the-art video game which is scheduled for release in March of 2005, available for use on the PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system and the Xbox(R) video game system from Microsoft. Christine Peters will be collaborating with the game developer to produce the film, which will be an action-packed thriller.

"'AREA 51' brings some of the most cutting-edge technology to the gaming world," says Peters, ("How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days"). "Bringing the game's riveting and suspenseful concepts to the big screen will be an exciting motion picture breakthrough."

President of Paramount Pictures and Vice Chairman of the Motion Picture Group, Donald De Line, couldn't agree more. "We are delighted to be working hand in hand with Midway Games to translate this innovative game into a provocative film. We look forward to bringing all the excitement gamers will feel playing 'AREA 51' to theaters everywhere."

The game, "AREA 51," features the voice talent of David Duchovny as Specialist Ethan Cole of the Hazardous Materials Division, Powers Boothe as Major Bridges, and recording artist Marilyn Manson as Edgar, the gray alien. Players will take on the role of Cole, who has been sent to investigate a distress signal from Area 51 where a viral outbreak has just shut down the research facility, automatically locking all scientific and military personnel inside per quarantine procedures. It will soon be revealed that the conspiracy theories and alien autopsies the world has speculated about with regard to Area 51 are far worse than anyone could ever imagine.

Paramount Pictures is part of the entertainment operations of Viacom, Inc., one of the world's largest entertainment and media companies and a leader in the production, promotion and distribution of entertainment, news, sports and music.

Midway Games Inc. is a leading developer, publisher and marketer of interactive entertainment software. Midway videogames are available for play on all major video game platforms, including the PlayStation (R)2 computer entertainment system, Xbox (tm) video game system from Microsoft, Nintendo GameCube (tm) and Game Boy (R) Advance. AREA 51 is a registered trademark of Midway Games West Inc.

Ron, what Street Fighter movie did you see in theaters? The only 'plot' that movie had was 'Guess Which Age Group This Movie Was Designed For'.

Street Fighter had no plot. It was simply one of the worst films of all time. And to think that it was Raul Julia's last film is just disturbing...

Yea, but look at what a disaster HOTD was.  I'm saying that SF had MORE of a plot than the dump that Uwe Boll took on us with that movie.

Well, the new Area 51 game is not a light-gun game like the arcade original was.  So I'm going to guess it has a totally different storyline and I would guess the movie would be based off of that.

Whether it stinks or not is a totally different subject.

Street Fighter ranks as one of the most fun times my friends and I have had in the theater. We were the only three people in the theater so we could verbally terrorize it all we wanted, and boy did we.

Chun Li whips out the GPS tracker and I shouted, "SEGA!"

We all had a ton of fun on that one. smile
