only when you mention helmets

wait, that's defensive.

Nice how you send me a pm warning about trolling, yet your post here isn't? LOL

CeeKay, Scuzz, USMC Kato, Daehawk, Soulchilde...thanks for having the right attitude towards my question.

The rest of you can suck it. I think i'm leaving here as I did OO, and for the same reason. Go back to your boring-ass talk of books and movies, and revel in your holier-than-thou, uptight, politically correct suckage. I actually feel sorry for some of your wives, as some of you are, I bet, just a barrell of fun at home. LOL

Is it me or is there a history?

See here. Read it and weep/laugh, depending on how much you care about the future of the human race. Tongue

Btw, I'm offended and I'm neither American or Asian (or gay).

ooh, this was a Zeke classic too

Maybe because not too many here would be actually interested in hearing those conservative points and debating them without eventually lowering themselves to personal attacks instead?

Nah, that would never happen here. Right?

Zeke wrote that and strange enough i agree with the sentiment.......Conservatives are like doves on the first day of dove hunting season on this board.... nod

Gratch, in response to your post: I know that there is a COC for a reason, etc., but I think at a fundamental level, a forum like this is going to be pretty good at policing itself... maybe it's not such a bad thing to let the masses run someone off now and then...

I don't necessarily disagree, but it seems to me the point has been made by now.  Don't really care either way, just struck me as odd.

Carry on.  smile

Scuzz, if the board does have a liberal bent, is that actually a problem?  Like minded people tend to flock together...  If someone wants to find a forum where people agree with them politically, I'm sure there are lots of options.  Regardless, I think it's incorrect to claim that Zekester gets jumped on in that thread simply because he holds a political affiliation that is at odds with the majority of the posters...

No.......I don't mind the liberal bend at all. There is only one comment that gets repeated over and over and that "you got your talking points from Fox News"....gawd I hate that one. I don't listen to Fox....I prefer to watch Olbermann and Maddow. It's as though a conservative has never actually thought of something himself.

And having looked at several threads I know there are people who over-react, argue based on emotion instead of fact (guilty) and let their fingers get them in a fight their brain can't get them out of.

I have had to learn not to argue something unless I want to spend the time researching points in the internet....and 99% of the time I neither have the time or inclination to do that.

If I just wanted the spin from the right I would listen to Rush......and that is not going to happen.

I think Ale's point is that the title of the thread is a clue that the first post has almost nothing to do with wanting to know where the AMP is and everything to do with wondering whether asians as a whole act in the same stereotypical manner.

In your example, I would assume your title would be something like "Best place for Armenian food in LA?" or wherever you live. Certainly not "Are all Armenians  Easily Offended?"

I saw the title to this, and who posted this, and immediately thought:

1.  This will end badly for Zekester (CORRECT)

2.  Someone will complain about political correctness (CORRECT)

3.  Oh, God, I hope he's not going to ask the sideways thing (WHEW)

4.  The offensive part will be offensive but in a banal way; the reaction to the offensive part will be entertaining (CORRECT)

As Korean-American (Korean mother, American father) kids growing up in the 1970s in less-than-diverse-at-the-time Virginia, my brother and I took a lot of verbal abuse and teasing. We each got called "Chinks" and "slant eyes" on numerous occasions growing up, and the kids on my preschool bus used to yell "EEEK! Chinese!" whenever I got on the bus each morning. I remember a school bully pounding me in the back in the hallway in 8th grade, and yelling "HEY CHINK! How's it going!" at me. I was carrying my viola in its case at the time. There are times I want to go back in time, and smash him over the head with my case -- but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have survived the aftermath.  icon_razz

I think even as late as 1985 when I was going on sort of a hiking trip back to my old home while on college spring break, I remember some high school kids yelling something similar at me (my heritage tended to be more visible if I got a bad, "dish bowl" haircut).

Today the country's so diverse, I don't think anyone can even afford to be that narrow-minded. In a way, it was good for me to go to high school on U.S. Army bases in Korea 1979-83 from the standpoint everyone was from all over, and the racial/cultural diversity was really wide, even in the smallest schools. There were still bullies, jocks, nice and not so nice people, but I really don't remember anyone ever picking on someone for their race.

I just share that cause I can see why someone might be touchy about it. If you've never been picked on or bullied or teased because of your race or because your parents were from different ethnic backgrounds, you might not quite understand why someone would get sensitive about it.
----------------------------------
But as far as something like, "If I ask you where to get the best kimchee, will you hit me?" No, I wouldn't do that. If I was in a good mood, I'd just laugh it off. I might even give you some recommendations. icon_smile If I was in a bad mood, I might tell you to buzz off.

as one of my old work buddies used to say, "do i look like a rug to you?"

where i grew up, with the ethnic diversity as wide as the off-white aisle of a paint store, if you stood out, you either were mocked or you became so motivated to succeed that you could get the hell out as soon as possible.

What if you asked if the majority of a race or ethnicity behaved a certain way?  Would that be okay?

But as far as something like, "If I ask you where to get the best kimchee, will you hit me?" No, I wouldn't do that. If I was in a good mood, I'd just laugh it off. I might even give you some recommendations. icon_smile If I was in a bad mood, I might tell you to buzz off.

Wait...was your father Klinger?

As a massage therapist I'm offended...but only a little. smile

Considering that most hair/nail salons and massage spas rely on each other for referrals he probably wouldn't have had to even ask. There's probably business cards or flyers on the wall in the nail salon bulletin board or table next to the door. All this ruckus for nothing....

To me, asking an Armenian where the best Armenian food is, isn't the issue. Asking if they all behave the same way, as if they are some stereotypical, homogeneous, group, is.

Ale

What if you asked if the majority of a race or ethnicity behaved a certain way?  Would that be okay?

Not really. But that's just me.

There's no doubt that certain ethnicities are exposed to certain points of view and behaviour due to environment ,upbringing and religion in general, but its a hot tomato to talk about, since quite a lot of people are scared witless of not being political correct. Thats pretty much what defines culture, so yeah, not really offensive to ask in general. Zeke did blow up and was kinda dick'ish about it, but still - it *can* be a valid question.

He is probably lurking as a hidden or guest.

ya, curiosity got the best of me so I checked today as a guest for the first time since my last post. I am not going to be participating in this forum anymore after this, for a couple reasons, including:

Quote
Seems to be somewhat of a pile-on

This is the main reason, as you seen in the other threads that i was involved in that people have linked to here. Now i'm not so thin-skinned as to cry about it, but it does get old when it happens seemingly every time and not only do mods not stop it, they actually send me warnings. I've read the CoC, and it says loud and clear about posting flame-inducing posts that don't even talk about the thread title. Go back and look at those linked threads and you'll see that I always responded in a defensive manner after the pile-ons started. That's not the best choice, but I get sick of it and the mods never doing anything about it.

there may be a liberal slant here

do ya think? it seems to me that it's the more liberal members that are the ones guilty of personal insults and pile-ons here. and apparently mods like naednek sympathize, as he does nothing to stop it, and in fact sends me warnings instead. Like I said previously...I always respond in a "wrong" manner in my threads only after attempting to defend myself. Why aren't the antogonizers warned or stopped before it gets that bad? So why would someone like me care to stay in a forum like this? Just look at this thread: I only responded badly after getting defensive from posters being allowed to post personal cracks or insults that had nothing to do with the original subject. These posters are just being ass-hats, and they're getting away with it.

As far as that NTB thread......those same tires have been on that vehicle since that thread, and guess what.....they never exploded or failed and caused injury to anyone. So my point stands.....NTB was being ridiculous about not wanting to install them, and are just part of the sue-happy society that the US has come to. They're covering their asses, but it's spineless, merit-less, and arrogant IMO

I started this thread without a strand of racism against Asians. I, in fact, happen to love most Asian culture and peoples, and to visit Japan or China are on my top two choices of places wanting to visit before I die. I grew up with a Vietnamese friend in middle school. So those of you here that assumed that I was racist against Asians were just flat-out 100% WRONG.

Did I stereotype maybe? Ya, I guess so. But so what? guess what, people....there are different races on this earth, and we all have our ways. BFD. I can accept it and live with it, can you? I'm a white Italian/German/Hungarian/Indian mix so stereotype me all you want. It's not that big a deal, people.

This thread was also started in a light-hearted manner. I get kinda bored with the usual type of posts in this forum. OO wasn't quite this bad, actually. No offense meant, Knightshade, but this forum could use an injection of more interesting and perhaps controversial posts to liven it up a little. People shouldn't be afraid to post off-the-wall stuff for apprehension of being ridiculed or banished or piled on. I've noticed some old-time posters here that don't post the kind of stuff they used to, and I have to assume it's because they don't want to be shunned. That's sad.

I don't care if anyone ignores my threads. I don't care if some call me out personally, but only if it doesn't turn in to a pile-on and free-for-all with no support from other posters or mods, and if i'm also allowed to do the same back without receiving warnings that i'm trolling.

Now I don't expect it to get any better here as far as i'm concerned, so i'll be leaving. You same posters that have always chimed in to my threads with your personal cuts, attacks and shitty remarks can celebrate. This forum now has one less controversial conservative member who wasn't afraid to throw some unusual stuff out there.

But answer one question first.........you same posters that don't care for me, and chime in to my threads with shitty comments about me every time, have I EVER done that to you? Have I ever posted something negative about you or your subject? If you didn't like my opinion or view on something, why not just ignore it altogether, or post something that's at least on the subject matter that didn't include a personal insult? I'll debate or argue it with you, no problem. But why do you have to include a personal attack every time? And why have the mods never seen this or did anything about it?
