Yeah, it seems kind of redundant. It is and it isn't. I'm sure there are plenty of us who were on Facebook already. It's cool to see some of the people from the boards on there. Now, if you're joining FB just to keep up with GT people, then yeah, it's redundant.

ok- I admit it - I'm only in this thread to stirr things up, or rather, because I dislike Facebook so intensly!
It's one of those irrational dislikes, where I cant help but spew rage whenever someone mentions it. I just don't get the big deal, and why everyone looks strangely at me whenever I mention I dont have and have no intention of getting facebook agan. (I almost wrote failbook ;-) )
Sometimes,I feel like the last person on earth! But why on earth should someone I went to kindergarten with 61234 years ago track me down, and add me to "friends" out of nowhere? we're not friends, we went to kindergarten together 61234 years ago!
I do believe I get it when applied to America for instance, since the distances are a lot bigger, and you can use it to keep in touch... But, there are other ways of doing that, and seriously, as I see it, its a tool for self promotion that has exploded into a society who values appearences of wealth and youth and popularity a lot more than it does the "older" values of morality, faithfullness and the ability to know right from wrong...
ugh - sorry for the explosion, but facebook is a red flag for me.
now, carry on, oh and I dont mean it as harshly as I probably wrote it...I just dont LIKE facebook ;-)

To be fair, I used Facebook for a while and thought it was an excellent tool for staying in touch with more people than you would with, say, email. However, when they started getting really creepy about privacy I bailed. Even that was a battle, the wankers really didn't want to close my account.

I'm also in LinkedIn. Anyone wanna add me as a contact, just drop me a PM.
Haven't done the facebook thing because I have this sneaking suspicion that the cut off age is around 39. After that you go from "participant" to "predator".

hmmm....i'll have to reevaluate my stance on facebook then. i always just assumed it was a social network for teens/college students and old guys who had grown tired of pretending to be "CrazyLady8" on craigs list.

While I'm sure there are a lot of teenage users on Facebook, there are a whole lot of adults who, like Mike said, avoided MySpace like the plague.

[Voice of doom] be aware that anything you upload, and any information you enter, are no longer yours, but belongs to facebook to sell and do with as they please. Careerbuilder, a global recruitment company already have bought information, and AT&T are also looking to buy all information about you. Funny thing is, like everything else on the internet, people don't really read the fine print, but still upload nude pictures to "private" areas without a though, blisfully unaware that Facebook owns those pictures the moment you do so....

I signed up on Facebook awhile back for some reason and never used it, then I recently got a message from a cousin and an old friend I used to work with -- so I have 2 friends. Kind of cool, but I still don't really use it.

Facebook is a very well run and user-conscious site. I use it to keep up with friends and family all across the globe. I am a member of several groups consisting of about 10-15 people like my local board gaming group, happy hour group, my Mom's side of the family formed one, etc. If you're worried about privacy all you have to do is dig in to the settings and they have tons of options. You can even create custom groups and only allow ones you specify to see various parts of your profile. The default settings even trend towards to safe side. It's a fantastic site and they are very proactive about keeping it clean and un-ghetto (a.k.a MySpace-ish).

Me too. I've used Facebook to track down a few friends I haven't seen in 10+ years. There's an OO Facebook group too but I won't be joining either one - I've got this weird thing about linking all my posts to my real name.

I just got a friend request from a guy I haven't seen in 25 years. He was my best friend, once. FB certainly seems to have hit some kind of critical mass among my peers lately. The bare-bones page I created 6 months ago is starting to draw attention with no effort whatsoever on my part.

Really? Are there other ways? Ways that are as easy as facebook? Because up until this past January I have not been able to find and reconnect with so many friends from my grad school, college, high school, elementary school, cousins who live in other states, etc. I guess I could do a google search on their names, but that would entail remembering both first and last names and even then its a crapshoot since there are bound to be multiple people with the same first, last name. And besides which, googling, then emailing out of the blue seems a bit like stalking to me.
