My wife recently hired a guy from Craigslist to do a fall cleanup at our house.  We have someone watching the house at this time.  The guy came, mowed the front lawn, and said that he would finish the rest the next day.  The people at the house gave him the check.  He promptly cashed it, and hasn't been seen from since.  We have called and left messages (and I have only left one or two irate ones), but this was almost three weeks ago.  The people watching the house got a hold of him and he said he would come Monday or Tuesday of this week, but he obviously didn't show up.

I really don't want to go to small claims court, but I'm guessing there isn't much we can do.  I have filed a report with the Internet Crime Complaint Center on both him and his wife (who the check was written out to).  Anything else I can do?

Doubt there is much you can do at this time without going to small claims court... but as an fyi for the future.. never pay a subcontractor in full until the job is done... If I have a subcontractor that requires payment in full up front, I look elsewhere...

Yeah, we should have told the people watching the house not to pay until the work is done.

Not that I would follow this up well, but... I was going to say, "go fuck him up!!!". Not that I would do that but...then I read of burning a house down. I win sanity! slywink

I laughed hard. After reading my post and reflecting, "Jimmy likes Elaine".

Figure that one out. eek

This is why you should never rent men off Craigslist.

Indeed.  Buying always pays off in the long run.

How much did you actually pay the guy, what exactly was he supposed to do and was there a written contract or estimate?
