I know I might be slapped for saying this, but I consider Eccleston to be the worst Doctor Who ever.

David Tennant for me  icon_twisted icon_wink

When you re-watch them, they establish that both Chris's Doctor and Davids are two entirely different ones.

Chris's doctor just came back from the Time war, and was excited about life and (seemingly) repressing the battle.

Tennant introduced himself as a vengeful doctor, and proceeded to sword-fight.

My steam profile is private, but if you're signed in you can see the text on the right that says "Are you my mummy?" biggrin

That episode, which also introduced Captain Jack Harkness, was all kinds of awesome, creepy and suspenseful.

I can't vouch for the later Eccleston Doctor Who episodes, but the first one i saw with the mannequins,Eccleston's Doctor acted like a simpleton at times,or always amazed at every little thing...maybe that is where Ironrod is coming from with the childrens show comment,as that is what i got from The Doctor in that episode,of course not the creepy mannequins though

Well, the Doctor is supposed to have a permanent sense of wonder. I'm thinking of a couple of episodes with downright silly "monsters" -- the walking fat blobs especially comes to mind (although that might have been a Tennant episode now that I think about it). The Lady Cassandra was downright silly too, in her first appearance, although they redeemed that character subsequently by making her more sinister. Every now and then we get a roll-eyes script or a cartoony villain that reminds you they're writing for children. We haven't seen many goofy shows since the first couple of seasons, though.

Shows written for adults have had goofy episodes, too.  Buffy's "Once More With Feeling" episode, for example.

I'm certain they're not writing for children.  I'm sure they make sure the episodes meet the ratings standard that they set for themselves (does the UK have a TV ratings system?), and kids certainly watch it, but they are writing at an adult level.

As CeeKay mentioned, watch The Sarah Jane Adventures to see the difference.  Still a decent show, but that one is definitely aimed at a younger crowd.

I do. I've got a lot on my mind at the moment. Two different doctors - the same timelord, but each iteration is not just physically different, but the personality and reactions are also entirely different. As easy as it might be for the show's writers, those are the parameters of a regeneration - none of the doctors are trying to emulate the other - they are all the Doctor.

True, and they even acknowledge it in the first episode as he tried to figure out what type of doctor he is.  It allows them to keep both the character fresh and give each actor a chance to make it their own.  Can you imagine if all of them were still trying to give us William Hartnell?

Ha,SKY News have just been reviewing tomorrow's newspapers(its midnight here you see)

The Daily Star has front page news that Michael Jackson's daughter(Paris Jackson) is to be the new Doctor

Don't worry though, the Daily Star usually prints utter bullshit for a sale...its all from a tweet from Paris Jackson(who is 15 years old!!),that said "OMG i wanna be the new Doctor"

While I think all this talk about who will be the next Who is fun, I can't imagine they're going to break stride and go with someone famous.  I'm sure they'll pluck someone out of relative obscurity.

I think the highest profile Who was Eccleston, having been in some Danny Boyle films and other bits, but I don't even think he was a household name and was at more of "that guy" status.

My question is, will they continue having a doctor who maintains a somewhat romantic (or potentially romantic) relationship with a companion as they've done since the show was rebooted back in 2005.  The only time there was a brief respite from this paradigm was with Tenant and Donna.  If they're going to do so, they'll hardly bring in anyone over 40 or 50 for the role.

I would love to see them break this trend, though.

I think it would be cool to have a "regeneration gone wild" series... Something where the Doctor's regeneration goes crazy and he regenerates every episode... or maybe make it a 2 hour special.. then they could have celebrities..

BBC denies rumors that new Doctor will be announced this weekend.  Some paper is supposedly going to reveal it tomorrow, and then rumors started that the BBC was going to beat them to the punch with an announcement tonight, but then this was said:

Quote
And judging by the comments from TV producer and director Ed Stradling, there is going to be a while to wait.

He tweeted: "Don't believe what you read about the new Doctor Who being announced this weekend. I think it must be Starburst getting a bit over-excited!

"Steven Moffat says this morning 'I haven't a clue who it is, we've barely started.' So no Doctor Who announcement this evening I fear!"

of course he says don't believe everything we read, so he could be lying.   or maybe he could be telling the truth.  paranoid

I'm being completely sexist, I know.  But I really don't want a female Doctor.  For me, the role has been male dominated for so long that to throw a gender change into the mix just smacks of gimmickry.  It would be like making James Bond suddenly female.

I noticed one name on a poll somewhere that really struck me as great.  Richard Coyle.  He's one of those great character actors you instantly recognize from a ton of films, but usually can't place a name to because he's rarely the leading man.  I saw a hint of a mischievous doctor in his work on Coupling and a Discworld mini series, Going Postal.  I would love to see his take on the Doctor.

The Doctor will be revealed live, and be interviewed by Zoe Ball. The other names on the bookies' shortlist? They include Daniel Rigby, Ben Daniels, Rory Kinnear, Idris Elba, John Hurt (!), Benedict Cumberbatch and Andrew Scott.

Truthfully, though, can you remember the last time the bookies got this one right? We'll see you back here on Sunday night to see who wins out. If the 100/1 outside, Jason Statham, prevails, you won't hear the end of it from us....
