Heath Ledger. According to the story the offer went out to him today but nothing has been confirmed yet. Ballsy choice, IMO. I can't quite see him in the role but I think this is the first time that The Joker may be accurately portrayed on screen. He's not camper, he's not over the top funny like Jack, he's a psycho who is absolutely utterly insane. I'm anxious to hear whether he accepts.

Possibly.  I don't think I've seen him in anything other than straight-faced roles.   Interesting choice that could work.

The problem with saying this is the first time he could be "accurately portrayed" is that with the Batman franchise you are talking about something that has a 70 year history and numerous incarnations in comics, TV, movies and cartoons each with their own interpretation of things.

YEah, I'm hoping for the same type of phenominon here actually. i thought Toby was a terrible choice, but he really nailed the role.

In all honesty, I don't think he could fit the physical profile for the joker. He's too old and he doesn't have the right face shape that the joke should have. Especially after that tragic car accident.

I disagree... he may be spiderman on-screen, but he ain't witty enough. Spidey is with the wisecracks... Toby? Nut-sew-mush.

As to the Joker; I want to see twisted rather than campy. Sociopathic and scary... Like American Psycho.

I believe "accurately portrayed" to mean per today's canon. I'd want the Joker from today's current comic issues rather than an alternate/older incarnation. Like, say, the campy television show or the original character concept (almost comic relief).

It's been confirmed on IGN as well. They also confirm that "The Dark Knight" is the title of the next film.

Official press release from Warner Bros.:

Quote
BURBANK, CA, 31 July 2006 – As a follow up to last year’s blockbuster Batman Begins, Christopher Nolan is set to direct Warner Bros. Pictures’ The Dark Knight, written by Jonathan Nolan, based on a story by Christopher Nolan and David Goyer. The film will be produced by Emma Thomas, Charles Roven and Christopher Nolan. Additionally, Christian Bale will resume his role as Bruce Wayne and Academy Award nominee Heath Ledger has been cast as The Joker. The announcements were made today by Jeff Robinov, President of Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.

Christopher Nolan revamped the Batman franchise in 2005 with the immensely successful Batman Begins, starring Christian Bale in the title role, which chronicled the early years of the superhero. Nolan first garnered attention from critics and fans in 2000 with the groundbreaking drama Memento, which he wrote and directed. He went on to direct the thriller Insomnia, starring Al Pacino and Robin Williams, and recently wrapped production on The Prestige, with Hugh Jackman and Bale.

Bale was most recently seen in the ensemble cast of Terrence Malick’s The New World. His other credits include Little Women, Portrait of a Lady, Metroland, American Psycho, Laurel Canyon and Steven Spielberg’s Empire of the Sun, which was his first starring role.

Ledger most recently earned Oscar Golden Globe, BAFTA and SAG Award nominations and won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Ennis Del Mar in the award-winning drama Brokeback Mountain. His other credits include Casanova, Monster’s Ball, Lords of Dogtown, The Brothers Grimm and The Patriot.

“Chris’ unique vision is what made Batman Begins such an outstanding film and we could not imagine anyone else at the helm of The Dark Knight,” said Robinov. “We also can’t wait to see two such formidable actors as Christian and Heath face off with each other as Batman and The Joker.”

“I'm excited to continue the story we started with Batman Begins,” added Nolan. “Our challenge in casting The Joker was to find an actor who is not just extraordinarily talented but fearless. Watching Heath Ledger's interpretation of this iconic character taking on Christian Bale’s Batman is going to be incredible.”

Production is set to begin on The Dark Knight in early 2007.

Nolan and Ledger are represented by CAA.

I love that title.

If Dark Knight is half as good as BR, then I can't wait.

Heath Ledger is the perfect choice for the 'you can kinda see it kinda can't' person to fill the role...just like TM as mentioned.

I'm excited to see what he and the director do with it.

The only thing Hamill has going for him in the role would be that he's provided the voice for the DCAU Joker.  But other than that... yeah, not a good choice.

New casting news...

Curious. I'm guessing they just cast The Riddler albeit he's not a villain through this film, but that's just a guess. I cannot wait to see this film. If it hits as hard or even harder than Batman Begins then we stand a very good chance of seeing an unbelievably great series unfold in front of us. Of course, that's what I said with Spider-Man 2 and X-Men 2 and look how the third chapters turned out on both flicks. mad But I really, really, really hope that Warner Bros. stays hands-off with the third Batman film.

At least for the time being Harvey Dent is a good guy. And I'm hoping Hall's villian will be delayed a movie.

Too bad Holmes left the picture, it's just not going to sit right now that they have to add someone else as Rachel Dawes.

I think they should scrap the character altogether, and have said that since the seeing Batman Begins for the first time. The character is a dud from the word go since we know that Bruce doesn't wind up with her ever, so it's fairly pointless to use her. Now if they dropped her completely and introduced a street walker named Selina Kyle then I'd have no complaints. icon_wink As it stands, I too am worried that they may start to stack the deck with villains but I do have faith in Nolan and Co. The word after Batman Begins was that they were focused on a trilogy where the Joker is introduced in the second film, and Batman and Harvey Dent work together to bring him down. The third film opens at the Joker's trial and he's the one who throws acid in Dent's face, and things get crazy from there. Or something to that effect. Personally, I like that approach but I just hate the Rachel Dawes character.
