I know that Prime exists for amazon.ca, but I've honestly never looked into it on account of them now accepting paypal. What does Prime do - give you free shipping, a discount, faster shipping? If it's just free shipping that wouldn't lure me away from chapters.ca as I get that with them on any order of $25 or more, my items always arrives withing 5 business days and I never buy anything that costs less than 25.

In the US, Amazon Prime gives you free 2 day shipping an any eligible order.  I think even for non-Prime they still have the free standard shipping for orders over $25.  You also get free release day delivery for lots of preordered video games, 1 free Kindle book to borrow per month from the Kindle Lender's Library, and Prime Instant Video (like Netflix).

Just the free shipping alone during the holidays is enough for me to say it's worthwhile.

Two day shipping on all Prime Eligible orders (which is pretty much everything). $3.99 upgrade per order to Overnight if you want it.

Oh yeah release day shipping too... forgot about that. Less useful for me now that there's digital distro, but it was a godsend for a few years. I can't actually remember the last game I bought that wasn't on Amazon Prime.

As an aside, I hate VigLink.  I don't want something adding links to my posts after I make them.  People should be able to trust that links are put there with intent.

Annoys me, too, for the same reason.  Even just making the links look slightly different from a self-inserted link would be a gigantic improvement.

I let Prime drop for the first time since they came out with it. I just can't afford it, and I don't plan to be ordering much from Amazon in the coming years. On Monday I took the new offer to get a Kindle Paperwhite in 5 payments at no interest. I ordered on the 10th with free shipping, and it still hasn't shipped yet. I am not bitching, I realize beggars can't be choosers, it just made me realize how great Prime was.

I do qualify for free Prime for 6 months and then half price as a student though. I may have to do that.

Free 2 day shipping on everything regardless of how much you spend.

Unlimited access to Amazon Instant Video titles.

It's basically the greatest thing ever.

Agreed.  Also another feature I discovered at Christmastime.  If you buy any CD (yes some of us still do that), they instantly allow you to download all the songs, and these can easily be ported to iTunes as well.  This is great when you are buying gifts for others, as you end up getting all the content yourself.  I'm hoping they do the same with Blu-Rays as well, though I guess it's kind of being done with Ultraviolet, etc. anyway.

What kinda annoys me is that I don't believe it really costs them much more to Prime-ship than to ship regularly. In fact, I have a feeling that not having Prime just means your shit gets stuck in a box and then sits in their warehouse for 4 days before they send it out. Whenever I buy something without using Prime these days I invariably wait 3 or 4 days for them to say it's been shipped, and then I receive it 2-4 days later. Back in the day they got shit out the door far quicker.

Confirmed. From the email I received this morning:

Quote
We are writing to provide you advance notice that the price of your Prime membership will be increasing. The annual rate will be $99 when your membership renews on July 13, 2014.

Even as fuel and transportation costs have increased, the price of Prime has remained the same for nine years. Since 2005, the number of items eligible for unlimited free Two-Day Shipping has grown from one million to over 20 million. We also added unlimited access to over 40,000 movies and TV episodes with Prime Instant Video and a selection of over 500,000 books to borrow from the Kindle Owners' Lending Library.

So $20... and I'll be keeping it for now.

That does appear to be the difference. The Kindle I ordered Monday has been "Preparing to ship" since 30 minutes after I ordered it. Since that time, I can "request" cancelation. Like I said before, I don't really care that much, I knew it would be awhile when I selected free shipping, but it does appear Amazon is just delaying it as an incentive Prime. Unless I get the college level of Prime, this just means I will be supporting local places over Amazon in the near future.

I ordered two things on the 8th and it has said "shipping soon" for days. If they release it tomorrow that would put it at 3-6 days till their delivery estimate. I bet they even use the exact same delivery service as Prime for simplicity's sake, making it no less expensive at all on their part.

Doesn't this strike anyone else as wrong? A company intentionally delaying shipment of products that you ordered for almost a week just so you'll spend money on a "premium shipping service" which is entirely the same as the free one except for the intentional delay?

We were just at the rodeo carnival.  Some people paid for those fast pass badges.  They got to go right to the front of the line while the rest of us had to wait.  Not always pleasant, but we had the same opportunity they did to buy the fast pass.

I've run a warehouse.  Items always get pulled by priority.  If it's slow, low priority items get out just as fast as high priority ones.  If it's busy, it takes a while to even get to the low priority items.  So no, it doesn't strike me as wrong.

I haven't seen the email for renewal yet, but if it goes to $99 I don't know what I'll do yet. I mostly use my Prime account for the unlimited movies now. I don't really buy much from Amazon anymore (I used to buy a ton of books, but that stopped once I got the kindle)...

I buy from Amazon quite a bit, but I hardly ever use the streaming video and have never gotten a book from their Lending Library, so I don't feel like I get a very good value with it anymore.  If they would at least let you see books in the lending library from your PC rather than only on the Kindle itself that would help for sure.

My renewal will come up in March 2015, so I guess I have some time to figure it out.

I seldom shop at all and only buy stuff through amazon once or twice a year. I frequently get free shipping anyway, although not of the 2-day variety. I'm definitely not their demographic. My wife, OTOH, is a frequent consumer who also uses their streaming service occasionally. Yet even she is waffling over whether it's worth an extra $20. Somehow price resistance kicks in at $99.

Any way I cut it....time, hassle, gas, etc....amazon prime always wins.   Given that items are usually cheaper than they are locally, and no tax...it's a no brainer.

Also considering the unofficial "share it with four friends", it's really like $25 a year each.

I don't use the video streaming or book lending at all.

sadly, it doesn't.  he got three out in 4 years and then took 11 more years to do two more books.  we'll be lucky to get TWoW in two years and who knows how long for the last one.

HBO just needs to get with the times and offer a streaming only option for their content. I'd bet ALOT of people who pirate GoT would sub if that was an option. Me, I'll just wait till current season is over and sub for one month via DTV, watch them all and then cancel...

Bah, all those capital letters you used made me think that the subscription requirement was going away for Amazon's box. I have had HBO Go for months, and I never watch those old shows. It's good for refreshes on the last season of current shows where needed, but otherwise I don't watch it much.

Don't get me wrong, good to see them loosing up a bit, but this isn't enough to make me want to buy a Fire TV.

Ahh yeah, sorry, it is for all Prime members, that is cool. Still hoping for an easier way to get new shows, that would make me ecstatic. I pay for HBO but I only watch it for the couple of shows I watch on it. Want a reason to get rid of it.

Love the Wire, just didn't watch it again because um...it's not in HD.

Yeah, if HBO had an online subscription that didn't require a separate cable subscription they would make a ton of money from that.

It's nice to see Amazon Prime at least going after these deals for new content and putting some pressure on Netflix.

I was bummed to see that most of HBO's offerings are only free in SD, but you can pay for HD.  Although I must admit that I'm already so backlogged with stuff to do, I doubt I'll get the chance to watch them anyways.
