Alien 5 update?

IGN has an interesting update here.

Probably the best part of it is two-fold:

1) The graphs showing the profits/costs of the films in the series

2) The fact that 20th Century Fox has lost their damn mind

If they really aren't talking to James Cameron and Ridley Scott (both of whom, as the article correctly notes, are on record as saying they'd like to do another Alien film) RIGHT THIS SECOND then this project may as well roll over and die. But that's just my opinion.

I read that Cameron said that if Fox went ahead with AvP then he would no longer be interested in having anything to do with another Alien film since the concept of AvP cheapened the franchise in his opinion.  I can't imagine the quality of the final product (or lack thereof) did anything to change his mind.

Seriously, why would Anderson get a shot over the other two guys?  Fox has lost their minds.  Damn shame, I love the universe.  I liked AvP, but it could have been a whole lot better.

Well, off hand I'd guess that paying Cameron or Scott PLUS their profit participation would guarantee the next Alien movie would lose money, given the ever decreasing boxoffice pattern.  Going with an el cheapo director like Anderson at least buys you the chance of making a modest profit if he delivers something entertaining. His AvP made more than Alien 4, according to that article.

The article mentions how cheaply Scott made Alien, but who in their right mind thinks Cameron or Scott wouldn't require a full on $100million+ budget to even start work on an Alien movie these days?

Exactly.  Fox seems to want to convert what was once a marquee brand into a value priced one.  Cheap director, cheap script, cheap actors and a percentage of the fan base that will buy a ticket for anything.  Studios are always happy with fairly low budget movies with a guarenteed return.   There is a reason why there are about 57 Friday the 13th movies.
