So here I sit for the last hour, waiting on our wonderful Phoenix PD to respond.  My side window is smashed out and lies broken in the street.  Tons of passers by could have called the cops and didn't.  The police are supposed to have an 'increased presence' in this area as my mom's truck was hit 4 months ago and my Intrepid was stolen 2 years ago almost to the day (they did it on Memorial Day rather than a few days later) but apparently haven't been past my house in hours or they'd have seen the mess.  I talked to the field officer and got nothing but empty 'we'll try harder' promises.  So here is the question...

What can I do short of moving?

It isn't like I live in the ghetto, but goddamn it it feels like it on days like today.  There was absolutely NOTHING to steal in my car, the viper car alarm is quite visible, I have a club, and a fuel shut off.  They aren't getting my car, so why bother with this nonsense?  Do I seriously have to start taking days off around Memorial Day to camp out with my rifle on my roof?  Do I really need to start taking matters into my own hands here?  What will it take to get my local police to take this seriously???

At this point, a little of that military background might be necessary to set up your own sting and take these assclowns down. Since the cops aren't doing anything, set something up then lie in wait for the vandals. That's my thinking on it. My attorney better half, however, would recommend against it but she's more of a rule follower than I. These people keep screwing with you, the cops aren't/won't do anything about it, so set a trap then spring it on your own.

If you happen to have a baseball bat in hand at the time... well then, how did that get there? ninja2

Yep, Phoenix is a giant slum now- watching cops tells me this.

They probably just smashed it to mess with 'the guy with the terrible lawn and crappy roof.'  icon_cool

Sorry about the bad fortune.

I'm sorry man. I've had shit like this go down before and the cops really are useless. They could care less and in most big cities, admittedly have bigger fish to fry. Still though, you'd think they could at least keep a lookout, ya know?

Honestly, Ron, based on where I live in the state, you do live in the ghetto. Are there worse spots in the state? Oh heck yes, don't get me wrong. But are there better? Yeah.

Your other problem is that you're the first house in your little subdivision. Easy in, easy out, and all that kind of crap. Of course, so am I where I live...

Come on down to Chandler or Tempe. It's not quite as congested as Phoenix is (yet), but a lot nicer in most parts of town.

Good luck dealing with the cops and all that fun stuff.

Oh, and I also agree with Mitch's suggestion. Yeah, it might not be as safe, but it would be a hell of a lot more fun. Plus you could grab some great shots for the site. nod

The only way to get the police to care is if you add in a murder.  So, you would have to catch one of these punks, kill them, and only then, call the cops.   nod icon_biggrin icon_eek

I'm just kidding obviously as I don't want you to actually do that.  smile

The part about cops not caring unless it's something heinous like murder, that part is true if you ask me.  When my house was broken into last year and all my stuff was stolen and/or vandalized, the cops did nothing to help us.  It took them an hour and a half to even show up and they only stayed for about 30-45 minutes before they left - never to be heard from or seen of again.

Here's the kicker - The thieves stole unactivated credit cards, activated them and then used them at various ATM's within a 5 mile radius of our home.  I know this because we called the banks that these ATM's were associated with and they were able to verify and match up the times and dates for us.  So, they have video of at least one person involved at 3 different banks that can be accessed.  Did the police ever follow up on this information we passed along to them that basically did all the work they are supposed to do?  NO.  We never, ever, heard back from the police department about it.  Even with repeated calls and a couple of certified letters.  NOTHING.

So yeah, I sympathize for you big time.  The police are worthless for the most part in my view.

A few residences ago, my car was broken into three times over the course of two years.  The police never came out - they just took a report over the phone, and that was it.  Sucks, but I guess they had bigger fish to fry.

Ugh, that really sucks.  They attempted to break into my car at the work parking lot.  This was the day I had my wii, laptop, and school crap in my trunk.  Someone must have know what was in the trunk sadly enough.  Good thing they only got the plastic ring on the outside off and didn't get into the trunk.  All the police did was come down and take my name and I was sent a little letter in the mail Tongue  Sorry to hear that happened to you though Ron and I hope that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

Two things:
1. Looks like you are parked on the street. That won't help.
2. Why are you waiting on the cops? I had my car broken into twice, and stolen twice. Not once did I need to talk to a cop in person. File a report and call insurance. Not much else you can do.

AZ is a bad spot for car theft. So bad that rather than actually do anything about it (because they know they can't) they put up billbords that say "Lock it or loose it". I say, how 'bout you don't steal my shit jackasses.

Sorry to hear about it. I know it sucks.

Crap, sorry to hear that KD.  Sometimes it's just an uphill battle when you're outnumbered, and then the best thing to do is throw in the towel and move.  Seems like all big cities have entire vast 'badlands'.   I just moved to Houston from SLC, and I'm pretty much scared for my life out here.  This place is one great big toilet.  I swear to god that one day I will own some acreage in the mountains where I can be a hermit, dbt style.  He's got the right idea.

Anyway, have you tried those motion detecting flood lights?  That might be an option, but I don't know how effective it would be.  Next idea is chain the pitbull to the back bumper.

Hey KD sorry to hear about what happened.  Having a 17 year old daughter that just ran away in the last month I know where your coming from with the police being no help.  She was 16 when she left and turned 17 four days later.

We had to do everything.  The only thing the cops would do is show up at addresses we had leads on to see if she was there.  Other than that we were left on our own.  The one good thing was the out pouring from family, friends, and strangers that came and helped in ways that we could never thank them enough.

I had it out with a detective at one point.  I understand that they can't go "Without a Trace" and have a full team of the FBI searching for my daughter but at the same time when it happens to you and the police are completely useless then it really opens your eyes.

As far as your situation, the cops can't do anything unless it becomes a wide spread problem in your area.  The best you can do for now is use your garage if you have one and get the window fixed.  Even at the rate of problems you have had it would be very time consuming on your part to try and catch them in the act.

If you have had enough though then I would say start planning to move.

Good luck man.

I hear ya.  I park on the street as my mom parks her truck in my driveway and my wife's Stratus is also in the driveway.  It isn't desirable but our options are limited, especially living on the corner.
As for waiting on the cops, I guess it is my misguided belief that they are here to help me.  I've learned pretty clearly that they are not this time around.

And yea...that is the wonderful paving skills of Arizona.  It took them days to do that.  *bleh*

Yeah.. I'd spend memorial day weekend next year sitting in my front yard in a lawn chair with my shotgun resting in my lap. Maybe a sign posted that says "Try it this year you little pissant motherfuckers. I'll feed you buckshot."

I bet the police would come out for that.

It would be really cool if someone marketed a wireless camera made specifically for your car; when it's in range of your house, it would record to your PC.  That way, you can catch some asshole in the act.

I saw some waterproof webcams equipped with motion detectors, which is really cool, but obviously you would need some kind of 360 degree cam to sit inside the vehicle.

It wouldn't prevent anything, but it sure might lead to them getting busted.

The problem is that it isn't illegals in this case, it's high school kids.  We all know they can't read.
