Some Dutch cartoonists may disagree with you.
Dutch? I guess Denmark and the Netherlands both are flat as pancakes, but still... at least he didn't refer to them as French.....

As much as like a good disaster movie, I really don't think I can bring myself to watch this one in the theater. The ridiculous level of hype about the Mayan calendar has exceeded my threshhold of being able to put up with idiotic theories about the coming end of the world for until Spring at the earliest. We'll have these competing with a new round of CERN/LHC-related crackpot theories at least until the end of the year. I can hardly wait until Halley's Comet comes back in 2061. That said, I'm interested in hearing how those who went liked it - I'll probably wind up seeing it on DVD if it's any good.

I have no idea if the movie is going to be any good or not, but reading its reviews at Rotten Tomatoes is highly entertaining.

I have no idea if the movie is going to be any good or not, but reading its reviews at Rotten Tomatoes is highly entertaining. Seems to be a big crowd pleaser, the audience I was in was full (on a Sat afternoon) and most clapped at the end. The effects were pretty awesome and look great on a big screen, the story I thought was OK and at least plausible. Some of the character moments and plotlines were pretty horrible, and a lot of stuff was predictable/fluff/gratuitous and could easily have been cut out, but whatever. All in all I had fun, and you don't get much more epic with disasters than this movie. Titanic, Armageddon, etc. are all just appetizers.

Roland Emmerich is a racist. You can actually let Christian symbols fall apart, but if you would do this with [an] Arab symbol, you would have ... a fatwa, Is he wrong?

The first high profile public fatwah against a purveyor of the arts that I can remember was Salman Rushdie. I believe he is still alive. Besides, why does Islam, out of all the world religions, get to have a pass? Is it just because they have fanatics willing to die for it? Seems to me like bowing out just because one is afraid of a fatwah would make it a self-fulfilling prophecy for the next Salman Rushdie-type to be threatened.

This movie was almost as bad as GIJOE. Just awful. The only good news is that it's streaming on Netflix (not HD though), so I didn't have to waste a disc rental on it.

I actually thought it was worse. Watched it when we had a free Starz channel preview from our cable company and can't believe I was able to sit through the whole thing. The acting was awful, but at least Emmerich still has a knack for massive destruction scenes. Although the next time I see a fault line chase a limo I might just throw up. It was ultimately a poor story jumbled together to justify massive scenes of destruction. The destruction was cool, but the rest was absolutely terrible, on par with the blood poisoning nonsense in The Day After Tomorrow. Emmerich remains consistent though, having characters outrun cold in Day After Tomorrow and characters outrun a fault line chasing them in 2012. Granted, it's a "check your brain at the door" kind of movie, but it was bad enough to make me want to kick my brain on my way back out.

Hmm, thought I posted about seeing this but I saw this awhile back and had a fun time. The blu ray edition sits proudly next to the Day After Tomorrow on my DVD rack.

The big thing for me was the disconnect for the audience on who we cared about.
The russian pilot: cool. (and dead). The russian hottie : cool. (and dead, uncelebrated PLUS saved the little girls life).
The movie was an excellent disaster movie - it started off with a horrible script and went down from there. The only three good things I have to say about it were about Woody, Cusack and the Special Effects (uppercased, since it was the other actor, and frankly the star).
And Cusack was just being Cusack, neurotic and over-analytical, he still carried the father / everyman role. Woody was entertaining, and the special effects was porn for anarchists.
Well, not anarchists... they just want to see the world with self-governance rather than a big brother. Dammit, you just caught me Cusacking.

I don't understand the hate for GI Joe. I saw it recently and had a good time. Sure the story wasn't really worth anything, but it was a great popcorn flick, and was fun seeing my childhood cartoons come to life.

GI Joe was WAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY better. If they cut 2012 down to 25 minutes of just big budge disaster clips, cut out ALL dialog, kept Woody, it might have been slightly enjoyable, ok well funny cause all the little people falling were really funny.

Since I liked the Transformers I should have liked GI Joe, but in my opinion the latter was horrid and everyone involved needs to be put against a wall an shot.
