coming Fall 2014 on the, you guessed it, Disney XD channel!

Quote
Set in the two decades between “Episode III” and “Episode IV,” the series will follow the adventures of the Rebel Alliance as they attempt to evade the growing might of the Empire.

since it's a Disney cartoon now, they'll need a catchy theme song with reference to Abrams work as well:

Life is like a hurricane here on Ya-vin
Race pods, lasers, x-wings - there's a lens flare
You might solve a mystery or rewrite history

Re-bels, Oo-oo
Tales of derring-do, bad and good luck rebels, oo-oo

D-d-d-danger, watch behind you - there's a stranger out to find you
What to do? Just grab onto some Reb-els, oo-oo!
Not hutt tails or gungan tails but Reb-els, oo-oo!

The guy in charge is Dave Filoni, who was one of the main guys on Clone Wars.  Having watched him in interviews, the series is in good hands.

I'm beyond excited for the McQuarrie style, too.

Tim Curry who did the voice for Emperor Palpatine in The Clone Wars is listed(rumoured) to return to do the same voice in this series

However,Tim Curry has just had a massive Stroke this week, but is reportedly doing well and in good spirits,so hopefully by the time they come to do the voicework for this Tim Curry will be well enough to continue

That role may be cursed.  Tim Curry is the replacement for the guy who was originally doing Palpatine on the Clone Wars.  He died at the beginning of last year (Ian Abercrombie - also the guy who cut his Snickers with a knife and fork on Seinfeld).

It's a bit strange that they're setting a TV series about the Rebel Alliance in a time period (14 years after Episode 3) where the Rebels barely even existed. It wasn't until the destruction of the first Death Star that they really started to gather support and gained numbers enough to pose a real threat.

they were big enough to have their own symbol Tongue

The Rebel Alliance was formed 2 years before the Battle of Yavin(Star Wars Episode IV)

Episode III was set 19 years BBY

so 14 years after Episode III(5 years before Episode IV)...we still need 3 more years before the Rebels were formed icon_confused

-19 BBY Episode III
-5 BBY 'Star Wars Rebels' setting
-2 BBY Rebel Alliance formed
-Battle of Yavin

so,a bit of filler then Tongue

I imagine the series will end with the Rebel Alliance fully formed, and this will be about how it started with just a few people and how they gathered strength

Have we seen in the many medium of SW how the Stromtroopers became Stormtroopers after they were Clone Troopers?

This information has been slightly modified with the Clone Wars series. In one of the episodes I've seen, we actually get to witness Mon Mothma, Bail Organa, and a few others form a secret organization to defend the Republic, though it's not called the Rebel Alliance at that point, obviously. The Empire hasn't even been formed when this happens. Padme is also present, though she doesn't formally join their group at the time. As a political movement the rebels were active for a long, long time, though few planets were willing to commit to their struggle until the Death Star's destruction.

Quote

No, but I believe the Edge of the Empire RPG talks about the subject. It at least goes into a little detail about how the storm troopers gradually opened up to accept non-clone recruits as the years went by. Most, if not all, the storm troopers we see in the movies are likely to be recruits. As for the armor, I would speculate it could have been a result of the factories being moved away from Kamino at some unspecified point between the trilogies. As far as I'm aware, we haven't actually been told yet what happened to Kamino and why it's apparently not being used to create clone troopers any more.

Edit: Scratch that. I just read up on the subject. Kamino joined the Alliance to Restore the Republic and turned their clone trooper production over to them, resulting in a small war between storm troopers and clone troopers. No wonder Kamino is no longer mentioned in the Empire. They continued to work for the Empire after the conflict, but I suspect they weren't given much important work any more.

Edit 2: Damn, now I remember. The forming of the Alliance to Restore the Republic isn't in the Clone Wars cartoon. It's in a deleted scene from Episode 3. It's probably not canon, though there are plenty of references to the Alliance fighting against the Empire from the earliest days of the Empire's founding.

Pretty sure I saw a synopsis that says it's a group that is rebelling against Imperial control of their planet.  Not necessarily "The Rebel Alliance".

Yep,  Im thinking this is not "The Rebel Alliance" but it is the seed of what will become the Alliance.

The very first concept art for the series showed an X-Wing battling a TIE Fighter though, and X-Wings were made specifically for the Rebel Alliance.

We could end up with the series changing some of the previous canon. We'll just have to wait and see.

Spoiler for Hiden:
yes.. This is it.. The series goes over what happens when the empire "takes over" a planet.. The quotes are on there, because the series will show how the empire is actually welcomed by the planet...at first...
Also...
Spoiler for Hiden:
this is making a come back in the series!

I've just seen this link about the same story as CK's link above, but adds that the final episodes of Clone Wars will be shown next year

Quote
Star Wars fans – I have some exciting news! We have wrapped production on all of the remaining Star Wars: The Clone Wars episodes, and while that might be sad news in one way, it’s good news in another. It means you will finally get to see them. When, exactly, is a detail I cannot yet share. I can confirm that in early 2014 you will be watching the final episodes of The Clone Wars, including one of Master Yoda’s most challenging missions. So, get ready. We’ve got Clone Wars and Rebels coming at you in 2014. Animated Star Wars is alive and well. Trust in the Force my friends.

Finally got a first look at Star Wars Rebels.  They put out a video regarding the lead character in the series.  The time frame is fairly unexplored for the Star Wars universe and could be interesting.
