I just found out about this one.  A BBC crime show set in the time and area of Jack the Ripper called Ripper Street.

I really liked Copper (in spite of its flaws) and I'm definitely on board for this one.

Thanks for the heads up.  This sounds like it could be good.

hmmm... may have to keep an eye out for this once it hits blu ray/instant watch.  it looks cool but damn if I have the time for a new show right now.

really wish Copper would make it's way to Netflix Instant as well.

Not interested myself. My wife's a huge fan of both murder mysteries and British historical costume dramas, so a British historical costume murder mystery ought to be her perfect show. She started to watch it late last night but fell asleep halfway through.

There's your review.  icon_lol

Now for mine.

I enjoyed it.  It's a mystery of the week type show, so don't go into it expecting non stop action or psycho style antics.  I'm a fan of Matthew Macfayden so that was a pleasant surprise.  I didn't realize he was the star of the show.

I'll keep watching, I'm sure.

I've seen previews for this and it's very much peaked my interest.  I just need to find out if it's been aired on any of the networks here in the Great White North.

Its kind of hard to get too much of an impression of where they are going with this show and we probably wont really know until they have a few more episodes out to judge by.  Still, it was good and there seems to be some interesting characters to develop.  For now its got a spot on my DVR.

Have there been any indications that we might get into the Saucy Jack stuff?  Or is that merely the pretext of the show and meant to be left at that?

The premise of the show is that it takes place some 6 months after the last suspected Ripper killing. Its been implied that the lead character and Jack have some history between them, beyond the original investigation.  So far the show is about the aftermath and residual effects of the Ripper case being unsolved but not directly about investigating the Ripper.  Its hard to say if they intend to get directly wrapped up in the Ripper mystery or if it will remain merely part of the shows atmosphere.

Thanks.  Is the last victim meant to be Mary Kelly?  Has her name been mentioned?

I went through a Ripper phase a couple of years back, and it still fascinates me to a degree.  I would hate for the show to never mention it again, but I get how having that big an unsolved case hanging over the characters as a premise could be powerful enough as a premise.

I'm really enjoying it.  Although it's a bit weird watching both this and Copper, since they both have "enlightened" late 19th century cops using modern forensic science techniques.

Of the two, I'd lean toward Ripper Street, but that's mostly personal preference since Inspector Reid is a bit more straight-laced than Detective Corcoran and that fits my personality.
