I'm pretty sure Nielson does account for DVR and web streaming.

Nielsen catches people via their Local People Meters.  I don't know how their new paper diaries track things.

September 20, 2007
The Nielsen Company today announced a timetable to introduce electronic Local People Meters (LPMs) to 38 additional markets by 2011, bringing to 56 the number of local markets that will by 2011 have television ratings derived from the most advanced television ratings technology.  All the 38 markets identified today are currently measured by a combination of Set Meters and handwritten Diaries. [PDF of cities and rolllout schedule]

Local People Meters are advanced electronic devices that continuously record television viewing behavior in real time all year long. The meters, placed in sample homes, accurately record who is watching what programs, and allows the measurement of various kinds of TV viewing activities, including broadcast and cable television, mobile video devices, video games, Digital Video Recorders, video on demand and other timeshifting.

Neilsen ratings don't account for DVRed shows?  You'd think they'd have it set up so as long as you watched the show at some point it would count in the ratings.  I guess there would be a time limit on even that, though.  When I used to watch TV, I would sometimes take weeks to watch something I had recorded.

They have been tracking DVRs for several years now and have several different sets of ratings depending on when you actually watch a recording.  The problem is that advertisers are very picky about when they stage their ad campagins so ratings are weighted to count more if a person watches a DVR'd showing the same evening that they record it versus the person who watches it two weeks later.

The results have just come in from Nielsen Media Research's fast nationals (preliminary ratings), and "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" is yet again No. 1 in its time slot.

Leno's total viewers were just slightly lower than the 5.8 million who watched Tuesday night; he had with 5.4 million viewers overall for Wednesday night's show.

No.  America sucks.

IIRC from when I worked at ACNielsen (a different branch from Nielsen Media Research), they only account for DVR programs if they are watched within a week of recording to count towards the ratings.  Beyond a week and it doesn't count towards market share of the show.

Leno was 24% lower than Conan O'Brien's debut as Tonight host -- and that was just switching timeslots, out of season, and without an Olympic run-up. Leno was also down 55% from his own Jay Leno Show premiere at 10 p.m. last fall.

Well, I don't think that it's much of a surprise that the premiere ratings for Leno Tonight Show v.2 aren't as huge as your two examples. People know exactly what they're getting from a Leno Tonight Show. Just my guess, but I doubt that Leno will lose too many of those viewers as time goes on. People like him at that time, I don't know why.

Conan O'Brien is headed to TBS to host a late-night talk show expected to debut in November.

The network said Monday that the program will air Mondays through Thursdays at 11 p.m. Eastern, shifting TBS' "Lopez Tonight," starring George Lopez, to midnight.

Yeah, but that's because people who watch Leno stay up and watch Leno.  They don't decide that they can DVR it or watch it on Hulu.  They turn on their TVs and go watch Leno at 10:35/11:35, since they're older and that's what they do.  That's why According to Jim was on for eight years.  Conan's ratings weren't good because, by and large, people who watch Conan are younger and more tech-savvy.  They choose to watch what they watch when they want to watch.

Yeah, it was noted a great deal that this is what was going on. Leno grew out of Carson and had his audience. There is a big leap between laughing at classified ad misprints and a masturbating bear.

Wow.  Just wow.

I used to work for TBS.  There has been a bizarre shift over time with them, but they're still considered kinda watered-down in the comedy department (a step-up from when I was with them, maybe, though).

Maybe they're making a massive push now, though.

Hmmmm, somehow I don't think he'll be getting as much viewership as he would have gotten with some other network like Fox. I think it's a bit different like WGN where there's a local version and then a national version where the schedules are different and not everyone gets the channel. I don't think we've had TBS for years, and even then, it's not the Superstation from the old days.

No wonder I can't find TBS in the listings. Canada only gets the weak PeachtreeTV which doesn't even carry the George Lopez show. According to Wikipedia:
Quote
Peachtree TV says it has no plans to broadcast the new Conan O'Brien program scheduled to debut on TBS in November 2010, meaning the series will not air in Canada, where O'Brien has a following, unless another channel picks it up.

It looks like Leno's ratings aren't doing so hot, and recently even when going up against reruns of Letterman they have dropped below Conan's.

I just saw a commercial flit by that Leno is going to be the host of the White House Correspondents' dinner Saturday evening.  That's a tough crowd, I suspect Leno will either mesh with them superbly... or fall flat on his face.  For some reason, that audience is usually an either/ or for comics.

A quote from some blog or other:
Quote
President Barack Obama and Jay Leno will work for laughs at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner. You’ll find coverage at C-SPAN at 8 p.m. Saturday. CNN says its coverage starts at 7 p.m. You’ll see more on other cable news channels. C-SPAN says it will offer red-carpet coverage at 6 p.m. on C-SPAN.org.

Personally, though I enjoy Dave and Conan, I have no particular urge to watch late night shows much, except to see particular guest stars.  The notable exception of course is Craig Ferguson who I'm pretty sure I'm in love with!  I hear he has remarried, though I'm trying to pretend otherwise...   tear

CBS released a quote from an upcoming 60 Minutes interview with Conan:

Quote
"He went and took that show back, and I think in a similar situation, if roles had been reversed, I know -- I know me, I wouldn't have done that,” O’Brien says. “If I had surrendered 'The Tonight Show' and handed it over to somebody publicly and wished them well -- and then … six months later. But that's me, you know. Everyone's got their own, you know, way of doing things."

Asked by correspondent Steve Kroft what he would have done, O’Brien says, "Done something else, go someplace else. I mean, that's just me."

O’Brien eventually left NBC, deciding not to play second-fiddle to Leno. He says he didn’t see the point in giving his all in a relationship that seemed to have no future.

"I think this relationship is going be toxic and maybe we just need to go our separate ways," he says. "That's really how it felt to me. … And I started to feel that I'm not sure these people even really want me here. … I can't do it [anymore]."

tonight's show was great and i can't wait to see what he has in store for the rest of the week.  the guests were all really funny and i hope that he'll continue to do things like tonight's musical performance that are a bit outside of the typical late-night talk show box.   if he keeps up that kind of stuff, he could really set himself apart from the rest of the crowd icon_cool
