I've decided to change my avatar from pooping angel to support Team COCO!
Word is he's getting a $30 mil payout. I don't think he needs your support. But he's losing something he loves and worked his whole life to achieve. If someone offered you $30 million but you could never play video games in any capacity ever again, I'm sure you would take the money, but a part of you would be upset that you can no longer play video games.

Pretty sure it doesn't work like that. IANAL, but this is essentially a non-compete and it has to have a sunset or it isn't enforceable, and the sunset typically can't be for more than 1 year. I had a prior employer try to foist this off on me and I ignored it because of sloppy lawyering on their side (took it to somebody qualified to verify, of course). That was 5 years ago, they never bothered to come after me One of the legal minds on the site can confirm.

The point is The Tonight Show, which Conan worked hard as hell for, was taken away from him after the briefest of times. It's like those commercials where the guy gives a little girl a stuffed pony, but then gives Jay Leno a real pony after he just shot another pony in the face.

The Tonight Show is kind of a mixed blessing though, isn't it? There is the prestige behind it, however you have to work for NBC to get it. I had a job that (some people) oo'd and ah'd about, and then I lost it when the company died. I'm happier now that I have to deal with that bunch of dumbasses. He will be too, plus $30mil helps.

The deal is done.
$45 Million, with $33+ going to Conan, and the rest to his staff.
His last day is Friday.
He can go back on the air somewhere in September.

While I won't "weep huge tears" I do feel sorry for him. Despite the amount of money he's going to make off of this, it's still hard to watch someone lose their dream in this fashion. That being said, I look forward to seeing him on FOX in September.

That being said, I look forward to seeing him on FOX in September. I weep a little. He's been nothing but loyal to NBC, worked really hard to make his dream come true and then got reamed in the ass for his troubles. If someone got physically abused and then received a hefty settlement for it, they'd feel great about the money, but they'd still be walking funny. Letterman got a really good deal from CBS back in the day. He's been doing his show for a long time and has a loyal following. Yet I have no question that his biggest regret is that he never got The Tonight Show. It probably still bothers him. Imagine how much worse it would feel to get it, then have the network basically say, "Psych!"

I'm glad a big chunk of the payout is going to his staff. Imagine uprooting everything and then losing your job after 7 months. I'm glad they'll be taken care of for a bit.

I can't wait to see what Will Ferrell has in store. I read the deal has a clause against Conan disparaging NBC in public, but I'm sure he has no control over what his guests say

We should all weep huge tears for him.
He was basically at the very top of his profession. He at least had the best postion (host of the tonight show) in his profession. It's certainly the most coveted. He was given/earned this and then had it pulled out from under him to be given back to the guy who 'unretired'. That's shitty and I can empathize with him. Sure his ratings weren't as good as the previous host but he wasn't exactly given a lot of time to build up an audience. Ohh but he made a boat load of money so fuck him.

Guy has come out smelling like a rose. Has 30+ million in his pocket. Will get whatever he wants from another network.
Meanwhile people lost they're whole families and are watching them get stacked like cordwood on the side of the road in haiti.

Ahh ok. A bunch of people died so all my sympathy must be reserved for them? What's the over/under on the number of deaths it takes to equal my %100 sympathy? I mean I'm a pretty sympathetic guy and think I have plenty to give out but obviously I need to invest it soley in one area. My daughter is very sick right now, can I feel sorry for her? Would that be ok or should I say "sorry honey but peopele are dying somewhere you just need to suck it up" ? My sister just lost her job, what about that?
Good lord talk about getting some perspective. How are these two things even correlated?

the point is you're feeling sympathetic about a guy who is on top of his game (and still is) has all of the PR momentum one can possibly have, has 30 extra million in his bank account, has pretty much a blank check for his next contract and has nothing but blue skies in front of him. That seems misplaced to me.

I don't know. I think it's allright to feel a little sympathy for someone who has worked towards a goal for many years, achieve it, and then have it pulled out from under him in such a shitty way. Mind you, I definitely think Conan will come out of this with something much better without being saddled by the baggage that comes with the Tonight Show, a show that lost a lot of capital when Carson exited and Leno made it his own thing.

chastising someone for expressing sympathy over something you feel isn't worthy of that emotion by citing a natural disaster trivializes said disaster and makes you look kind of bad.

I should have done this: One of these things does not belong here, come on can you tell which one? A.) Sister loses job. B.) Sick child. C.) Super rich star pockets a gigantic fat wad of cash, is universallly loved, will get a new show that will come with a built in audience and continue to make fat wads of cash after a few months of vacation. D.) Haitain earthquake that killed 100k to 200k people.

It's a form of Godwin's Law as you can't really argue against it...nor is it intended to be debated. It's used when the commentator has absolutely nothing for the discussion.

No one is saying they feel bad that Conan is suffering because we all know he's not. All anyone is saying is it sucks to achieve a life's goal and then have it taken away like that. It's not like people are donating millions of dollars to his cause or trying to help him find a new job... we all know he's going to be fine. What's next? How can people have the audacity for being upset over Jay Leno doing this when Hitler killed so many people? That's your ultimate trump card right there, F Haiti.

If someone is going to bring something like that to a debate then I expect them to immediately cease any other discussions on something as trivial as a video game forum. After all, with all of the horrible stuff going on in the world, where to we get off being excited about Mass Effect 2, Darksiders, Bayonetta, etc?.

Isn't it a general law of the internet that show + cancelled = pissed off internet minions?
I can't think of a primetime show that has been cancelled in recent memory that didn't have some internet people wanting it brought back. I imagine people will be pissed off when Heroes is cancelled at the end of the year.
