I read on SyFy that Michael SHanks is up for the role of "Danno"  in this.

Can't wait to see if they still say "Book 'em, Danno!"  That and the original score would get me interested enough to give it a try.  I was hooked on this show back in the day...  nod

Since Jack Lord almost ended up playing Captain Kirk (imagine if William Shatner had played McGarrett instead of Lord  icon_razz), they should give Shatner a cameo role.  icon_smile

http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Performers_approached_for_Star_Trek_roles
Quote
Jack Lord (1920 1998) was an American actor who was Roddenberry's first choice for the role of Captain James T. Kirk in 1966 after Jeffrey Hunter refused to reprise his role of Christopher Pike for the second pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before". A deal with Lord fell through, however, when Lord demanded fifty percent ownership of the show. [13] [14] The role subsequently went to William Shatner.

I read the lead is Alex O' Loughlin (sp?) - the lead vampire from Moonlight.  He is absolutely a gorgeous guy, possibly the best looking guy on TV IMHO, but hasn't had much luck with his TV career as of yet, though it's obvious people love him considering how quickly he gets work.  He was recently on a medical show (involving heart transplants) that tanked.  Hopefully the producers will be smart enough to get him with his shirt off as quickly and often as possible because I think a lot of his fans lost patience with that medical show pretty quick.

I wound up with six hours of recorded TV tonight, and Chase on NBC didn't make the DVR-limited cut, or it would have been seven. H5-0 is on the DVR waiting for another night, as I had to crowbar my ass off the couch after watching 4.5 hours of TV.  Good to hear that this is looking good to start.

I more or less enjoyed it.  But it seems like a goody-goody version of The Shield with the task-force storyline minus the corruption and questionable morality.  Still, the characters were charismatic and the action was pretty good.  Unfortunately it was kind of forgettable.  Having limited time and an irregular schedule, it takes a dedicated, conscious effort to stick with shows.  I just don't see myself making too much of an effort to ensure I catch this every week.  I really like Boardwalk Empire as well, and I worry that I'll make little effort to even keep up with that, making this that much more expendable.

Caught this last night. Didn't really watch too much of the original series, but the first episode they did here was pretty enjoyable. I did watch Moonlight, so I was familiar with Alex before. I liked the smart-ass buddy cop banter and seeing two fellow Asian-Americans on the show was good.

Grace Park in her skivvies gets no complaints from me either.

Premiere ratings were really good -- it was the most watched debut Monday by far. And I guess the "highest rating non-dancing show" icon_smile):

From Variety:
Quote
According to Nielsen's sample of most of the country's biggest markets, "Hawaii Five-0" was the most-watched new series, generating a 9.7 household rating/15 share at 10 p.m., an hour that saw ABC's returning "Castle" score a 7.9/12, while NBC's new "Chase" notched a 4.8/8. "Hawaii," an update of the 1968-1980 CBS crime series, dropped on the half-hour from a 10.0/15 to 9.3/15.

Probably the most successful reboot of any TV show so far too. Much better than Knight Rider is in any case. It's surprising how enjoyable it is when so many had doubts about it. Most of it could be attributed to the writers who wrote the Star Trek script, I guess.

I dug that McGarrett's dad had what appeared to be a gigantic finned black car of some sort in the shop (the gigantic big U.S.-made cars are what I remember most from the original show). I wonder if Steve will restore it and drive it again, that could be fun.  icon_smile

I hope the scripts are consistently good in the ensuing episodes. The pilot had such a gut-punch motivator (his dad), and you can't really do that 22-26 episodes a year. I liked all the characters though, and I look forward to seeing how things shape up.

The line does get said, but I'll leave it for you to enjoy yourself, though I think I can say that "Dan-O" doesn't much appreciate the line. icon_smile

What it has in common with the 1968-80 show are the character names, the Hawaii setting and the still fantastic theme song (remixed, jazzed up a bit). That's about it. And that's fine by me.  icon_smile Frankly, most times the original show bored me to tears for 40 minutes and than maybe had a 5 minute shootout here and there. And most of the time, everyone was inexplicably running around Hawaii in 3 piece button up suits.

The new show is wall-to-wall action, though i doubt they can keep up some of the stunts from the pilot show on a regular basis, cost-wise.

Some critics call it "formulaic" but most of the top rated network shows are like that, and I think formula works as long as the characters are ones you want to spend time with.  icon_smile

The show's co-created by the "seemingly everywhere" Orci and Kurtzman (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/television/news/e3i8decb5ca03594f57ff81a2357e92b659). You have to wonder just how the heck those two find enough time to be involved in so many TV shows and movies. They must drink a lot of coffee.  icon_razz

It may be formulaic, but I'm glad it's straightforward at this point, rather than the flashback style of storytelling.  I think people are glad to have a show they can just sit back and watch without worrying if they missed anything.

I can honestly say that the creation of their little "task force" was the most contrived, plot-hole-riddled setup I have ever seen.  That being said, I thought the characters/actors were decent and it will stick around on the DVR schedule unless they squander it through repeated stupidity.

Spoiler for Hiden:
And I wonder how long it will be before we bring back the Big Bad.  No body = no death.

re the spoiler, yes I wondered about that too.  icon_smile

I like Southland, which I don't consider formulaic, but I think that's part of the reason it was a ratings flop on NBC and will probably have to scratch and claw to keep TNT's support past season 2. I totally embrace formula done well, I just hope it doesn't keep the networks from occasionally trying something a little more ambitious or different.

I think the show was fairly formulaic but fun.

As a side note, for sci-fi enthusiasts, it's interesting to note that both actors Jin and Spike were featured in Angel, and of course the main star was in Moonlight, tying all 3 characters to vampires.  And of course Grace Park was a cylon, so we've got a nice collection of vamps and clones.

I watched it. It's The Shield in Hawaii, only without the swearing and partial nudity.

They even went as far as to get one of the guys from the latter season or two of The Shield for this show too. Then they made a joke about calling their group the "Strike Force" or something at the end.

It was like... "Hey, look at us, we're doing that show again, but with pretty people and none of the harsh reality!"

well they get no bonus points for origonality, thats for sure.  This show is one of the most trite, cliche ridden shows Ive ever seen.  They ran with cliche after cliche until they very ending where they use the most over used cliche in action tv... yeah Im talking about the bad guy.   That being said,  the characters were entertaining and the by play between McGarrett and Danno was kind of fun.  As long as they can keep the characters likeable and interesting, the show should do quite well.  I like Grace Park also but I hope that she gets to do more than run around in a bikini or flounce around in her underwear.......   OK thats a lie,  Im fine with all of that.

I'll give this pineapple infested show some more time, the pilot was far to heavy on exposition (needed I'm sure but tiring to watch).  The stunts were pretty good with lots of car-fu/truck-fu/boat-fu.  Best part of the show for me?  The theme with that great drum beat.

Grace had a lot more to do in episode 2 (both butt-kicking and emotionally), and no bikini shots (at least that I saw). crybaby  McGarrett had a hacker friend, I wouldn't be surprised if he shows up now and then.

My wife and I both like this show but couldn't help noticing that Grace Park just looks a little too skinny to be healthy. I thought she looked a lot better and bulked up as Boomer. And in her fight scenes w/ the Serbian girlfriend we couldn't help but notice that a little more muscle mass would have given her an edge.

She does look kinda waifish. She looks to be approaching Keira Knightley shape (or an ironing board with a face as Jeremy Clarkson put it). Girl could definitely benefit from a few more curves.

Grace isn't a spring chicken anymore (she's 36), and I wouldn't be surprised if she slimmed down for the bikini scenes in the pilot. In interviews she professed to having little or no experience with fight scenes, so I don't know if she's in "fighting shape."
