with Billy Bob Thornton starring.

Quote
Academy Award® winning writer/producer and Academy Award and Golden Globe® Award nominated actor Billy Bob Thornton has signed on to star in the FX limited series Fargo, an adaptation of the classic Academy Award winning feature film of the same title by Joel & Ethan Coen, it was announced today by John Landgraf, CEO of FX Networks and FX Productions. Production begins this fall in Canada and the series is slated to premiere next spring on FX.

Thornton will play "Lorne Malvo," a rootless, manipulative man who meets a small town insurance salesman and sets him on a path of destruction.

Thornton won the Academy Award for Outstanding Screenplay for Sling Blade, for which he also was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, and he was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor for A Simple Plan.  He has four Golden Globe acting nominations for The Man Who Wasn’t There, A Simple Plan, Bandits, and Bad Santa.

A 10-episode limited series inspired by the film, FX’s Fargo will feature an all-new “true crime” story, with the series following a new case and new characters, all entrenched in the trademark humor, murder and “Minnesota nice” that has made the film an enduring classic. Fargo is written by Noah Hawley. Executive Producers are Joel & Ethan Coen, Warren Littlefield, and Geyer Kosinski. Fargo is produced by FX Productions and MGM Television.

Coen brothers are awesome...still this seems like a mistake. The movie doesn't need it's good name soiled by a TV show.

Don't see why this would necessarily soil the movie. Seems like they're getting some good talent, and the Coen bros will be able to watch over the show.

Justified, by itself, proves that FX can put together a great show brimming with local character, to say nothing of The Shield.

Never heard of either, but I watch almost no TV. So pardon my ignorance.

You haven't heard of The Shield? What is it like, living with the Eskimos?

I have cable only for soccer, I watch the AMC shows, Daily Show and...Survivor. I pretty much ignore anything about TV unless someone who knows me insists I watch some show, like Mad Men.

plus Sons of Anarchy, Rescue Me and American Horror Story.  some might be worth the time to rent, or if you got Netflix has those three while Amazon Prime Instant has The Shield and Justified.

Yeah, I've got all of The Shield on DVD, I watched all of Rescue Me on TV and Netflix and I'm catching up on Justified right now. I couldn't get into American Horror Story.

maybe this will get people excited:

Coen Brothers adaptation will also star Billy Bob Thornton

Bilbo Baggins is relocating from Middle Earth to the middle of nowhere.

Martin Freeman, who plays Baggins in “The Hobbit” movie series, has been tapped for FX’s upcoming series “Fargo,” based on the Coen Brothers’ 1996 film.

Freeman will play Lester Nygaard, an insurance salesman who has seen better days, is henpecked by his wife, and whose life is changed forever when mysterious stranger Lorne Malvo (Billy Bob Thornton) comes to town.

Anybody watching? I just saw (and greatly enjoyed) the pilot tonight. Got three more episodes in the can and will get caught up in the next few days.

I'm trying to get the wife interested, as I've heard very good things.

Apparently, no one she knows is talking about it, and that's her barometer, somehow.

Martin Freeman is no slouch, either. This is the best role I've seen him play. He even does the accent pretty well.

I keep checking to see if this is available on Hulu but it looks like FX has blocked it to require a cable subscription.
