I troll Gamestop every couple of days to check the reviews.  Every once in a while I might have clicked on an article or even a video if the subject matter interested me.  Over the past year or so (maybe it's been much longer; I've been trying to keep these simpering idiots out of my brainspace), the temptation to click has disappeared and a desire to run screaming from the site increases.  The images used to lead you to their videos are increasingly filled with the heads of their "personalities" instead of an image from the game or story that might actually interest you.  As though the hosts are the draw.  But, I ask you, are these jerks a draw?

From least to most egregious.

This first one is okay. She doesn't seem to be trying too hard.

Plus, in finding pics for this post, I discovered she can also look like this:
Spoiler for Hiden:

This guy makes me want to punch his high five.

Speaking of punching high fives, I really just want to mangle this one's hand.

At first, you might be fooled.  Thinking that she seems kinda cute.  Harmless.

But then you realize she uses the same vapid, fake-geek, borderline duck lip pose all the time.

Those eyes are empty.  And they look dead straight into the camera.  Dead straight into you.

But even that one is nothing compared to these buffoons.

Especially this guy.

Fuck him in particular.

Look at him.

Society is dead.

Seriously, Gamespot.  Stop it.  Just stop it.

I enjoyed your post and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

I use flipboard on my phone as it does a decent job of aggregating random news for games.  This woman comes up all the time in it and while she isn't hard on the eyes, they do promote her over the actual story.

Games media is increasingly personality driven and sadly it needs to be if it's going to compete with the various youtubers and streamers.

But on the other hand they have Danny O'Dwyer, who is possibly the greatest gaming personality around at the moment. That man can do no wrong. Just watch some of his videos if you don't believe me.

I keep hoping Giantbomb officially poaches him.

And this is the perfect segue.

I think GS is trying to co-opt what Giantbomb has done so successfully.

The only reason GB is the success it is, is because people care about the guys running the site.  That's the only reason I go.  That's the only reason the bombcast is the only podcast I listen to..and I do so week in week out and I buy very few games any more.  That's the reason so many were crushed when Ryan Davis died, and why I have him as my Av almost a year later.

You take Jeff, Vinny and Brad out of GB, the site will die. GS is just trying to build that same loyalty..

It feels like all the biggest gaming sites, such as Gamespot, IGN and GameTrailers, are trying to build up personalities lately. It's working, too. I think people like Kyle Bosman and Danny O'Dwyer are real draws that differentiate the various sites between each other.

The sites realize that they're in a situation where they have little opportunity to present exclusive news. What then are people supposed to visit them for? The answer is: Your favorite personality. That's what they're going for, with varying degrees of success.

Yeah, I get why it's happening (frankly, it's transparent), but I don't believe the end goal is to nurture a desire to punch said personalities in the face before even listening to what they might have to say.

So that first girl, are you trying to say "is she hot or not?"  As for Danny going to Giantbomb, it looks like their new hire is Dan Ryckert from Game Informer.  I never visited GI before but wanted to get some idea of who Dan was and so watched a few videos he was in and I think he will work quite well at GB.  Watch the first episode of the Overblood super replay, very funny stuff.

Curse is particularly bad at this as well. I think all this started around the time G4 stopped being dedicated to games and everyone is trying to be like them. Problem is, not everyone can be a good host. I find the problem with most of them tend to be that they're rather snarky. Or they often come across like they don't really know their material. Which is why I tend to appreciate Angry Joe. He usually tells it like it is and he usually knows what he's talking about and is honest about it.
