While Martha is the least dynamic companion so far (or the new Who), she's certainly not bad.  We've been lucky.

Martha was wasted on a sad and pathetic rebounding Doctor  who was pining for Rose.  The problem with Martha's run wasn't her, it was the Doctor.

Tennant was a fantastic doctor (and my second favorite after Baker).  He wasn't the problem.  The real issued was that they tried to create another Rose instead of following the series' long established history of mixing it up with different types of characters.  They soon realized that mistake though and grabbed the utterly fantastic Donna for a tragically too short run.

No love for last week's "Dark Water" episode? I thought that was one of the best-written hours of Dr Who ever.

No love for last week's "Dark Water" episode? I thought that was one of the best-written hours of Dr Who ever.

Certainly the best of the season.

My only quibble was with the villain's plan.

Spoiler for Hiden:
The uploading of consciousnesses and taking the bodies (then, I guess, swapping them with a replacement, maybe) seems like way more trouble than it's worth.  Do they even need the consciousness?  I thought the whole point of the cybermen was to take that out and leave behind a hollow soldier.  Missy said something about the dead outnumbering the living, but it seems like they're only taking the recently dead (those they can get the consciousness from), and that doesn't really apply if that's the case.

The whole nefarious plot seemed a little vague at best and not well plotted at worst.

None the less, everything else about the ep was top notch.  A lot of fun, with some great surprises.

While I'm upset to see Clara go after the next one (or is she leaving during the Christmas one?), their chemistry really isn't clicking.

I will reiterate here my prediction that this is all leading to the return of Donna Noble.

Spoiler for Hiden:
Who was the companion the last time the Master was around?

Honestly though, it seems to me that:
Spoiler for Hiden:
The Cybermen and Master had actually come up with the perfect peaceful solution to upgrading everyone eventually. I mean think about it, your consciousness lives on in a data matrix after your physical death, and the cybermen get your physical body. If it weren't for the cybermen always trying to cyberize everyone unwillingly, I'd have no problem with that setup. A win win situation.

And yeah, I also want to see the return of Donna Noble, although I would love to see the original actress back for a short time, they could just as easily have a new actress with Donna turning into a full time lord, then regenerating. Call her, The Noble. Or perhaps, The Best Buddy, because I always liked how Donna as the companion was a purely platonic friendship, which is what this new doctor needs.

Really though, they could have a cool story element where Donna turns out to be one of the first time lords.

It was one of the better episodes in a season that's seen some of the worst writing of the show's history since its revival in 2005, but that's not much of a benchmark, unfortunately.

Still, I hope it signals a return to form for the show.  It at least seemed to capture the spirit of a Dr. Who episode instead of floundering around, grasping at so many moods that it felt like it was being written by someone who'd never even seen the show before.

Tough crowd.

The relationship between Clara and the Dr came into sharp focus with one line: Did you really think that I care so little for you that betraying me would make a difference?

So, what do people think of the season finale?

Spoiler for Hiden:
Ended on a really strange and down note. Although I suppose that's because they know they'll have the christmas special to do something, I mean, what with the final scene.

And boy was it weird to see the callback to the unit days in this version of the Doctor.

Also, anyone super sad that the glasses girl with asthma died?

The big one, The Master is dead. Again. Although, if they somehow keep her dead, it's not a bad way to end that character. Winning against the doctor in some twisted way, even with a strangely low body count.

And there's a good guy cyberman still running out there, along with a crazy self-hating Dalek.

Spoiler for Hiden:
Is the master really dead? It looked like she ported out right as the doctor was about to shoot. The effect of her "gun" was always to burn up the victim, but the effect on her was the blue glow she had previously when teleporting.

I also didn't understand why Clara was important in the plan and why the master needed to choose her.

Here's Moffat on it

Spoiler for Hiden:
“I always rather enjoyed how they handled this problem when the wonderful Anthony Ainley was playing the part in the 80s,” said The Moff on Doctor Who Extra.

“He would get killed, definitively, at the end of every encounter with Peter Davison and Colin Baker. And then he’d turn up at the start of the next Master story with roughly this explanation: ‘I escaped!’ Suits me, I’m fine with that!”

“Supervillains don’t die, do they?” he added. “I wouldn’t trust anything about that character’s ability to lie down and stop breathing.”

It was not her gun that fired, though. It was the CyberPink.

None the less, she'll be back.

Not CyberPink. CyberBrigadier (Kate's dad). Either way, I think she teleported. I hope she's back next year, I absolutely loved Missy.

Hmm...

Spoiler for Hiden:
I was a bit sad that they didn't play the 4 beats music, or at least kept it understated to where I didn't notice it.

Spoiler for Hiden:
Actually, there was some tapping earlier in the first episode.  It wasn't exactly the same, but similar enough that it seemed clearly intended.

Absolutely loved Missy.  The actress was fantastically fun.  I really hope she returns.  Also, I hope glasses comes back.
