anyone else planning on checking out Sci-Fi's newest series Alphas?   it starts tonight at 10pm, and it looks to be them trying to create the next Heroes.  It looks like it probably has half the budget, especially when looking at the cast list and their powers.

I'll say:

Bagger Vance - Ability to bag groceries at 4 times the normal speed of a human bagger.

Speed Talker - Can convey up to 3 times more info during a conversation than a human conversationalist. 

The Watcher - Can look at something for up to 12 minutes without blinking.

Seattle Slim - Can squeeze between two cars parked very close together.  Powers also work when squeezing between other things that are close together.  Does not work unless she turns sideways. 

Aquaman - the same one from DC

Sounds like another under-budgedted SyFy 'original' series.. which is pretty much a skip for me. How does the channel even stay afloat now that 'BattleStar Galactica' is off the air, I'll never know.

Eureka's okay (not great, but okay these days).  Folks seem to like Warehouse 13, although I've never watched it.  Sanctuary was a guilty pleasure for a while, but I stopped watching for some reason.

I think when they went down the reality show and professional wrestling path, I lost a lot of respect for them.  They're scy fy in name only most of the time.

This one is going to be 'Betas'. It's about a rag-tag group of elite government agents comprised of ordinary people possessing extraordinarily mundane powers who are completely incompetent in their prowess of those powers.

Watched it today and actually it wasnt too bad.  They have a group of 5 people who have powers that are not too over powered but still strong enough.  They are fairly basic like enhanced strength guy, the jedi mind trick babe, a girl who can heighten her senses, a guy who can read electromagnetic signals and a guy who has extremely enhanced hand-eye coordination.   Theyve already established a conspiracy mythos and the characters are somewhat interesting.  I went in with very low expectations but was pleasantly surprised.   I am going to give this one a chance.

I watched on monday night and was pleasantly surprised as well...went in with really low expectations, but it wasn't bad at all.  It definitely didn't grab me the same way Heroes did in its premiere, but Alphas was at least good enough that I'll be tuning in again.  As for escaping the usual pitfalls of being a low-budget SyFy series, it didn't actually seem too bad in the premiere.  The effects were nothing spectacular, but I can't say they looked bad by any means...but this was the premiere and they could get worse later...

really liking the show so far.  haven't seen this weeks episode but last weeks was great.  word is going around that it'll get a season 2 announcement soon too.

looks like Alphas, Warehouse 13 and Eureka all take place in the same universe-  last Monday's episode had Dr. Vanessa Calder from the CDC in it (played by Lindsay Wagner), who is Artie's love interest in Warehouse 13, and Warehouse 13 has Fargo from Eureka in it on the next episode.

Wasn't terribly keen on it until the episode before last.  When sharpshooter guy shot out the hinges on the door for the advancing tactical swat guy, i sat up and thought "neat" for the first time.  After that, it just seemed to click for me.  It's not first season Heroes good, but it's fairly decent for the budget.

I've been enjoying this series. This and Warehouse 13 are all I watch on SciFi. I feel really bad that I've just started watching Eureka and they've cancelled it in favor of more pro wrestling.

I can state this as a fact - the production values need work.  In the episode I'm currently watching, they aren't even attempting to hide the fact that they're shooting in Canada.
