starring Sam Rockwell as a lone astronaut stationed on the moon alone, or at least he thinks he is.  looks like it'll be one of those mess with your mind thrillers.

Hell yeah, I'll watch that.  Hopefully they don't screw up the ending like most of these modern sci-fi suspense movies, though.

How much would someone have to pay you to live alone on the moon for three years?

A year I could probably do but I think three would drive anyone crazy…  paranoid

Wow, that looks like classic science fiction right there.  I'm definitely watching that.

I very much like the artistic design on this one, it clearly takes from the current NASA shuttle and spacesuit white and black motifs and expands it into a whole moonbase.

Give me WoW, LoTR Online and Fallout 3 and I could be good for at least 3 months. After that I would start to make up the imaginary friends too.

Not to undermine the premise of the movie, but who would come up with the idea of putting a person alone on the moon for 3 years? That just seems like a recipe for disaster that no one outside of the University Psychology department would contemplate.

It looks good.  The only concern I would have from watching that trailer is that the writer may be going for yet another retelling of occurrence at owl creek.  Hollywood loves to trot out a retelling of that story every single friggin' year, put a new name on it, then try to convince everyone that it's high brow entertainment (a la Jacob's Ladder).   I hope I'm wrong though.

Every so often a sci-fi movie discussion comes up and it causes me to once again struggle to remember a sci-fi film I saw as a kid which scared the absolute crap out of me.  The only parts I remember involve a giant killer robot, a hot chick who hides under metal grate floors, and I always thought the lead actor was either Roy Scheider or Jack Palance.  And to this day I have never been able to figure out what movie it was.  It's a rather obscure sci-fi film and it's been haunting me for decades.

And this thread got me fixated on that damn movie again.  But, I have finally figured it out by searching for movie robots.  Apparently all these years the film I was thinking of was Saturn 3 and the lead actor was Kirk Douglas, not Palance or Scheider.  The robot I remember scaring me as a kid was Hector:

I needed to get that off my chest and celebrate finally figuring that out.

Carry on.

I'm not quite clear on the details, but this is now in some kind of limited release and has gotten some nice reviews. Bit of trivia: it's directed by David Bowie's son.

According to Wiki, the bot is named Gerty and is voiced by Kevin Spacey.

"The film pays homage to the films of Jones's youth, such as Silent Running (1972), Alien (1979) and Outland (1981)."

And I'm in.

In for tonight - any other NY GTers want to join?  Doesn't make a big difference to me whether I see it at Houston St., Times Square, or Lincoln Sq. (I'd prefer the first two based on ease of getting there).

No, really, I'm the strangest person you could ever meet. I did have the luxury of being unemployed for 9 months once and only leaving the house once a month to buy some groceries so the only physical interaction was the grunt and nod at the checkout. I loved it. Silence is golden. I sometimes fantasize about being deaf.

Doomed, I have a few questions for you.  Please answer truthfully.

1) Have you ever purchased a van and covered the entire interior in sound proofing material and carpeting?

2) Do you have a windowless room in your house whose door you've hidden behind a bookshelf?

3) Do you ever find yourself watching Silence of the Lambs and nodding your head a lot?

If you've answered yes to any of the above questions, I would like to announce that I actually don't live in Chicago.  I live in Denmark.

It's only opening in LA and NY at the moment.  IMDB doesn't list a wide release date for those of us in flyover states.  I'm hoping that changes in the near future.

Doomed, all kidding aside, I really suggest you talk to someone.  The tin foil over the windows thing is something a friend of mine did when he was going through the darkest part of clinical depression.  If nothing else, talk to your physician.  he/she can suggest a good mental health counselor.
