I was looking for a replacement for my EEPC, and this might just do the trick. I'm sure I'd have to see how fast I could type on one to really be comfortable with it being my primary travel laptop replacement though....

Great move for Google. This is something that will actually take sales away from an iPad, I think.

if anyone wants a size comparison I'd say that thing looks pretty close to the Kindle Fire, which has a nice feel to it. if it's the same dimensions the N7 could possibly fit in one had (if you have big manly hands and not girly hands)

Really? My first thought was they were aiming at the Kindle Fire or the Fire 2.

Actually looks pretty good.
EDIT: Just read that Android chief Andy Rubin told AllThingsD on Wednesday that the company went "from zero to working product in four months." Yikes.

Apple readying some competition?: Google this week took the wraps off of the Nexus 7, a $200 mini-tablet. It's easy to see what Nexus 7 does to Amazon: it forces the $200 Kindle Fire into obscurity.
But what about Apple?
There's been lots of talk about whether Apple will launch a 7-inch tablet that goes head to head with the Fire and now the Nexus 7.
Steve Jobs famously said a 7-inch tablet is a non-starter, because the icons on the screen would be too small for a great experience.
But as long-term Apple watchers know, a Steve Jobs "no" sometimes actually meant little more than "not today" — he reversed himself to put video on an iPod (which he once said people wouldn't want) and to launch the iPhone (which he implied Apple wasn't working on). I find Jobs quote about the icons being too small, considering the fact that they work great on the iPhone and iTouch. Another thing to consider is that, sadly, Jobs is no longer around to put the kibosh on such a move. later in the article they mention perhaps Apple should make a bigger Touch instead of shrinking the iPad. I am interested in seeing how this turns out. I love shiny toys like this; heck, I was almost sold on the Galaxy Note until I heard the magic words 'Galaxy Note 2'

Quad-core Tegra 3 processor with 1GB of ram tablet running Android 4.1 for $199 sounds like an awesome deal. And as it's being put out by Google you'll know it'll always be updated to the latest OS.

I'm definitely on the IN side of this. I was about to order the Kindle Fire this week for my birthday, but saw this last night and read some very positive reviews. I also see rumors of a Kindle Fire 2 to be released as early as late July, early August.
I'm going to sit tight right now, but I'm a huge Android and google fan. This baby looks great and I'm seriously contemplating a preorder.

I don't know what came over me but I ordered one. I love my iPad and wouldn't trade it for anything but this just looks so neat. Oh and Well Walt Mossberg seems to love the Nexus 7 "The Toughest Challenger to the iPad"

damn, he convinced me to stay with the Fire: But for now at least, the Nexus 7 seems to be aimed more at competing with the Kindle Fire. Like the Fire, it’s being positioned mainly as a content-consumption device. Unlike Apple, Google is playing down the productivity and creativity aspects of the Nexus 7 and treating it, as Amazon does, mostly as an inexpensive hardware portal to the company’s cloud-based offerings of music, video, books and magazines. all I use it for is Amazon stuff- ebooks, instant video, the occasional free app. in my case it doesn't make sense to change devices, but if I didn't have a Fire I'd be all over this.

I'd imagine since it's a native Google device you could just download the Amazon Marketplace app and still get all your goodies that way. Best of both worlds.

Yeah, Amazon Appstore is always available for any Android device.
Personally I quit looking at it a long time ago. The app of the day tends to be lame, and reviews are unbearable.

Weird, the 8GB is in stock and shipping. The 16GB model can't even be ordered. You can sign up to be notified when they're taking orders again. Despite the focus on streaming, I bet they wish they had gone 16GB and 32GB instead. I'm sure the push for the $199 price point informed that decision. Still, it's interesting to see where the market is.

So having played with this for awhile now I will say it a pretty sweet tablet. I still have a hard time using it over the iPad because of the screen size but everything else is wonderful. It is a really great piece of technology all around.

Did you ever check out the Transformer Prime by chance? Just wondering if the browsers work well on the Nexus. The Prime drove me crazy because of how flaky the internet browsers behaved. The Nexus looks like a sweet tablet overall.
