I am never keen on English language remakes of Japanese or in this case South Korean movies they just never catch the same atmosphere as their originals and i am worried that this may very well be the case again
Den of Geek

Strangely enough it seems Spike Lee directing Oldboy was announced first,Oldboy was the sequel to Sympathy for Mr Vengeance,i am guessing we will get Sympathy for Lady Vengeance as well at some point

But its Sympathy for Mr Vengeance remake that is the news today

Quote
Director Spike Lee already has a mighty job on his hands, what with the English language remake of Oldboy that he's bringing to the screen later this year. We're intrigued, if slightly nervous, to see it.

But it seem as though the raiding of the catalogue of Park Chan-wook isn't going to stop there. News has now broken that the first chapter in the director's Vengeance trilogy, Sympathy For Mr Vengeance, is getting an English language remake.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian are set to produce the film, and they've hired Broken City scribe Brian Tucker to pen a screenplay. No word on a director yet, but we'll keep you posted as we hear more...

Oldboy was one of the more disturbing movies I've ever seen.  While I enjoyed it somewhat I don't think I can sit through it again.

The hammer in the hallway scene from Oldboy is just iconic.  One of my favorite films of all time.

The remake will most likely gut the story though.  I could be wrong...but I doubt it.

Agreed on the hammer scene, but I don't think the twist will work with US audience.. Hell, I still have trouble with it

And since that twist is a huge part of the emotional impact of the film, that's a big reason why I don't think the American remake will work.

That may be the reason that Spike Lee is actually a good choice for this.  His blatant disregard for bending to studios or kowtowing to audiences might let the core of the film remain.

On the other hand, an argument can be made that a lot of that perceived rebellion and iconoclasm can be directly attributed less to artistic integrity and more towards just a disdain for everyone's opinion but his own.  I've got a bit of a love/hate relationship with his work.

One of the biggest flops of the year!

Anyone go see it?

It is doing pretty terrible at Rottentomatoes as well as not making any money.

Suitably grim and bloody yet disappointingly safe and shallow, Spike Lee's Oldboy remake neither surpasses the original nor adds anything new to its impressive legacy.

If you've never seen the original, you're bound to be impressed. If you have seen the original, you're bound to be distracted by the way in which Spike Lee screwed this up.

Well, seeing as the original is available on Netflix streaming, I do believe my decision has been made.

Also, see those posters they had for it?

The film's marketing company completely abused, then stiffed the artist that came up with the original concept for those ads, which look almost exactly the same as the concepts.

I saw the original so this remake was just ok frown
The one good thing I can say is that Josh Brolin would have been an excellent choice for an older Batman.
