Quote
The latest installment in the game of 'reboots you never saw coming' is apparently a plan to bring The Naked Gun series back to the big screen. Previously headlined by the late, great Leslie Nielsen, Paramount is eyeing Ed Helms to now take on the role of Lt Frank Drebin.

Can not say i have any faith in this at all,Ed Helms i think is okay, but he's not Leslie Nielsen Tongue

Naked Gun is my favorite comedy ever, and a remake is both completely pointless and disrespectful to the memory of Leslie Nielsen. Nobody can pull of Frank Drebin after he did it. To suggest a reboot is to imply that someone can do it better than he did.

That's not even considering the fact that there's not a director in Hollywood today who's able to create comedy in the style of the Naked Gun movies. Mark my words, this remake (if it ever gets off the ground) will be filled to the brim with mindless sex jokes. Sure, Naked Gun had its share of those too, but they were rare and clever for the time.

This is like when they tried to reboot the Inspector Clouseau movies with Steve Martin taking Peter Sellers role.  Even with an accomplished comedian like Martin, it was a bad idea.  Some roles are so firmly tied to the original actor that its senseless to even try.   Lt Frank Drebin is one of those roles.

A thousand times no. Whatever, if you want to make a Zucker and Abrahams style movie, that's fine (even though most, even those by the Zuckers and Abraham now stink), but don't screw up Naked Gun.

Ed Helms? Hmmm. Throw in Will Arnett for giggles. Oh and they can get OJ out of jail for a weekend and throw him off another building.

Is Leslie Nielsen still dead? If so, we don't need a new Naked Gun. If not, I could go for zombie com.

Bad idea is bad idea. At the very least, get someone like Micheal Hogan instead of this guy.

I'll agree that by the third film things were a little tired(but it was still dumb fun),but not the first film, that is up there with Airplane!(and Top Secret!)

Maybe they should do a Police Squad series first with Ed Helms and see how well he is as Drebin, and then decide whether to do a film from that

Move along,nothing to see here

Surely Ed Helms will be playing Frank's offspring and some awful variation of Son of a Gun will be the title.

I've grown steadily tired of Ed Helms, but even if this starred someone I loved, I cannot imagine this being anything but a bad idea.  The comparison to Steve Martin in the Pink Panther films is dead on.

Eh, humor is individual, guys. I find the first Naked Gun movie hysterically funny, the second really funny, and the third passable. For others, each movie may be as unfunny as they can be, and that has nothing to do with taste or the lack of. It's just how our brains are wired. I mean, roughly 50% of people out there won't be able to see what's so funny about Monty Python.  icon_eek

well this will make you all feel better*

Apparently Ed Helms is playing Frank Drebin,no relation to Lt Frank Drebin

This is not a reboot, rather a continuation with another Frank Drebin

http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/naked-gun/28852/fresh-details-emerge-of-new-naked-gun-film

Quote
He confirmed that the plan is to write the new film in the Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker style, saying "we're trying to fit in 100 jokes a page". "We're very much embracing the style", he said. To our knowledge, none of the original ZAZ team are involved, however.

As for the recasting of Drebin, Garant revealed that "our take is that Ed Helms is Frank Drebin, no relation. That's how he introduces himself", adding later that "we're making it pretty clear that he's not Leslie Nielsen. Those are just too big of shoes to fill but we're trying to do as good as those"

"Frank Drebin, no relation" is a funny line, but not funny enough to overcome the distaste this whole project brings out.

The ZAZ style is incredibly hard to pull off.  Just ask the "producers" who "make" "films" like "Not Another Teen Movie" and the like.

I really don't feel the ZAZ style is something others can copy. Even the last couple droopy Naked Gun sequels you could see the formula wearing thin without their group creative genuis/insanity at work.

I'm with others who are basically sick and tired of Hollywood digging through the graveyard of fine films for something else they can screw up as a remake/reboot.
