Did anyone here know the Falcons were the worst ranked team on defense to make the playoffs?  Yes - worse than the Seahawks.  They only bested the Seahawks in one defensive category - run defense.  Every other defensive stat - Seattle is better.  Of course, no one mentioned this prior to the game so everyone is "shocked" that Rodgers trashed the worst passing defense in the playoffs.

On to the other game:
The talking heads are still ignoring the fact Seattle's defense is top 10 and keep using the Seattle road record thing which doesn't matter when that team already won this season in the stadium they are playing in again.  Don't be surprised if Cutler winds up sacked 5+ times with 6-9 passes knocked down (by whomever including DBs).  If the Bears run, run, and run some more, they will beat the Seahawks, but I don't see Mike Martz doing that in the playoffs.

Cross-posted from OO to share with the rest of GT.  I'm sure naednek has already seen it:

New theory (using the SEC argument which I still disagree with, but heck, why not?): The NFC West is so much awesomer than everyone else, they beat each other up which is why none of them finished over .500.

The SEC is much awsomer than everyone else, but they don't finish .500 or less.  They win 5 BCS Championships in a row. slywink  Geaux Tigers!

Not if you use Y/G. Pats and Seahawks were worse than Atlanta.

I'm also confused about the pimping of the Seattle D.  They allowed 368 yards per game.  27th in the league.  2nd Worst in the NFC West.  They allowed 25.4 pts per game.  25th in the league.  2nd worst in the NFC West.  What stats are we using to determine their efficacy?  This is a horrendous, horrendous football team.

Lastly, they play in the NFC West, which means they got to play three shitty offenses twice.  Based on that, the stats show that they are fucking awful.

all in all, a terrible way to end the season.  i expected as much for the first half of the game.  too bad they finally hit their game in the end of the fourth.  could have been much better, which is at least a glimmer of hope more for next year.

at least i have my weekends back for gaming.

No kidding.  Of all my picks this weekend, this was the one I was most confident in.   I'm not crazy about either team, but find Rex Ryan's attention-whorishness to be endlessly annoying.  Would love for the Steelers curbstomp them next week.

Ya I was about to record that on my iphone and post it.  Couldn't believe what I saw.

Anyways I have a question...
Can somebody explain why this rule is in place...

I can't remember which game it was, might have been the packers game, but someone on the offense fumbled under 2 mins of the half (could have been the end of the game, everything is starting to blend) the defense picked it up and was running it back. Shortly after he started running, the refs blew it dead, stating because it was under 2 mins of the half (or game) by rule, the ball can't be moved forward.

Why is that? That doesn't make any sense.

I could see why they would do that for the offense (can't intentionally fumble the ball in place of an illegal forward lateral) but not sure why the defense wouldn't be able to take it back.

Perhaps the moment the ball is fumbled forward and a player other than the player that fumbled the ball touches it, the play is called dead.

The forward fumble rule came about after the Raiders made a series of intentional forward fumbles to score a winning touchdown.  Since a forward lateral is illegal beyond the line of scrimmage, they used fumbles to circumvent the rules.

Sept. 10, 1978

In the most shameful fumble in pro football history, the Oakland Raiders deliberately dropped the ball, then batted and kicked it into the end zone for a last-ditch, game-saving touchdown.

"The play is in our playbook," bragged Oakland guard Gene Upshaw after the contest. "It's called 'Win At Any Cost.' "

Trailing the San Diego Chargers 20-14 with only 10 seconds left in the game, the Raiders desperately needed to score a touchdown. Oakland quarterback Ken Stabler took the center snap at the San Diego 14-yard line and looked for a receiver. Just as he realized nobody was open, Stabler was hit from his blind side for what looked like a game-ending sack.

But, with a flick of his wrist, the crafty veteran fumbled the ball forward. It bounded to the 8-yard line, where Oakland's Pete Banaszak in an Oscar-worthy portrayal of a klutz—batted and booted the ball to the goal line. There, teammate Dave Casper kicked it into the end zone and then fell on it for the tying touchdown. The point-after, which came after time had expired, gave the Raiders a victory they did not deserve.

After the game, the three Oakland players admitted it had been a phony fumble. "I tried to fumble," said Stabler. "If I get sacked, the game is over." Said Banaszak, "Sure I batted it. I could see a San Diego guy right alongside me. If I picked it up, he would have tackled me and the game would have been over." Added Casper, "Sure, I helped the ball along into the end zone."

What the Raiders did was illegal, but the NFL said it was impossible for the officials to judge "intent" since Stabler, Banaszak, and Casper conveniently waited until after the game was over to confess.

To make sure the fake fumble didn't appear in any team's playbook the following year, the league added a new rule that states "Any fumble that Occurs during a down after the two-minute warning may not be advanced by any member of the fumbling team except the player who fumbled the ball"

Just to be a fool... so what if a team intentionally fumbles, the guy who fumbles runs to the endzone, then the rest of the team never actually picks up the ball, but keeps batting it forward until the fumbler can recover it?  No one on the fumbling team "advanced the ball" since they never picked it up and the guy who fumbled recovered it so he "advanced the ball."  slywink  Surprised the Raiders haven't added that one to the playbook.
