I wonder if the Wicked Witch who got Dorothy's house parked on her head is the main baddie in this one
Did the Witch of the East have winkies, too? I must consult my wife, who has read ALL the Oz books and knows crap like that. What the hell are Winkies?,LOL....is that the technical term for Flying Monkeys? That's what Baum called the WINged monKEYS. In the Oz books they're an enslaved race with a sad backstory. (edit) Which is not what the wiki says, but I'm sticking to it anyway.

Isn't there a statute of limitations on spoilers?
The next thing you know, someone will try to convince us that the Titanic sank. Thx. Movie ruined. Never saw it ,was going to watch it tonight. Ruined my evening with the wife. Fuck!

If nothing else, that poster is rather nice. Almost makes me wish it were a game.

Nothing surprising about it, there's some great talent behind this film.

Although getting some very average reviews and also average opening day,Oz The Great and Powerful clawed some back for the Saturday and managed to have a decent weekend, making $80 million domestically, and altogether $150 million worldwide so should have no problem at least getting its $200 million back Total Lifetime Grosses Domestic: $80,278,000 53.5% + Foreign: $69,900,000 46.5% = Worldwide: $150,178,000 Complex.comApparently there is already talk of a sequel(a new sequel i mean)

Between the trailer and the ads and the reviews, I don't think this is worth enduring a trip to the theater. Will probably add it to the netflix queue and see it in a year or two.

Some friends wanted to go so I ended up seeing it this weekend. It’s enjoyable enough while you’re watching it but easily forgotten a few hours later.
When the movie does its own thing it is actually quite successful; the problem is it always reels itself back in to play it safe and tries too hard to connect to the original. The worst offender here is any scene involving the traditional green witch. Her mannerisms are straight out of the original and don’t fit the tone of the movie or how her character acted prior to being green. Also, her “origin story” is pretty lame. (Note: I never read the books so I can’t comment on if they stick to the subject matter here.)
The 3D was quite good, something I don’t say often.
On the whole I would say it’s worth a rental but I wouldn't go out of my way to see it.

Just saw this,I liked it,it wasn't massively amazing or anything but it was enjoyable some people have been saying Mila Kunis has been miscast for this, but i quite liked her TBH The Green Witch made me laugh, seemed they were having fun with her character Spoiler for Hiden: They did a 'Darth Vader' with the Green Witch origin story and made her a classic tragedy character instead, fooled into becoming Wicked and Evil(and not as hot...although....ahem) this line got me thinking for a few moments as well... “I'm not the wizard you were expecting, but I may be the wizard you need.” and then it hit me,reminded me of this... "Because he's the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now" Oh,and i heard someone asking why it was in Black and White at the beginning of the film ...although personally i would of made it Sepia

I was mostly distracted by the fact that she had a sister with a British accent. Must have been adopted.

I just learnt today that before this was out, there was 3 Oz films in pre-production/idea stage One was to be a modern day version-sounds shit One was a Drew Barrymore directed film named Surrender Dorothy which would star the great, great grandchild of Dorothy-sounds shit and finally there was a Non-Musical remake of The Wizard of Oz to be done by Guillermo Del Toro starring Christoph Waltz...which sounds friggin' great However, with Disney beating everyone to the table i think they have all been scrapped, but there are rumours that Warner want to get in on the Oz action

Saw it this weekend, and I was expecting to be disappointed, but overall I liked it quite a bit. I wanted to love it, though.
I, too, think Mila Kunis was miscast. I like her a lot, and she went all out, so I'll give her that, but she just has a way of speaking that doesn't fit this film. Her voice rhythm is too teen still or something (interestingly, I wasn't hearing that as much before things went bad). Some review I read said it was like hearing the witch as angry Meg Griffin.
Some of that holds for Franco, too. His way of speaking was a little too modern, IMO. There were moments where he didn't seem completely committed, too.
There was also something about the special effects that were trying to make the world seem epic, but somehow had the opposite effect. It felt very closed, somehow. It often felt like a bunch of small sets stapled together to look big. There were also some amazing moments, but then some lame ones. Things were blurry that shouldn't have been (I did not see it in 3D). There was a horse in the background when they left Oz that stopped moving then slid across the scene. It was like it had been animated in the 90s.
OTOH, the China Girl was a thing of beauty. I loved every single thing about her. The look, the performance, the fragility (even if no one holding her seemed to have their hands in quite the right spot). She was absolutely my favorite character.
I was expecting to hate Zach Braff, but I wound up liking both incarnations of him.
Rachel Weisz was good, too. And Michelle Williams was able to capture the sweet yet knowing essence of Glinda without doing the voice.
I thought the big payoff scene in Oz where the wizard pulls his powers together was pretty cool.
So, overall, not perfect, but a lot better than I feared it might be.
