It hasn't got the swagger of the Iron Man films or the densely layered story of the Dark Knight movies, but it's at least getting part of the way towards being that good. Wolverine's versatility as a character is one of his biggest strengths, and in The Wolverine, we finally have an on-screen demonstration of what that actually means. For all its loftier ambitions, the best gift The Wolverine gives is a simple one: that you'll leave the cinema wanting to see more of the character. And that's, straight away, a vast improvement over the last standalone Wolverine outing...

I saw this with a college pal and his bro at a Regal RPX screen Saturday. They are giving out free, white, XL-size Wolverine T-shirts with the RPX screening. Surprisingly good quality.

We quite liked the film -- although we agreed the last 1/3 of the film seems to have been chopped in from an overblown Iron Man sequel. Basically...
Spoiler for Hiden:
the Steel Samurai feels like a lazy ripoff of Iron Monger in the first Iron Man movie.

It also seems a shame they give no credit whatsoever to the classic 1982 Chris Claremont-Frank Miller 4-issue "Wolverine" series (to be fair, Hugh Jackman points out the series in every interview about the film). Check out this Claremont interview for his thoughts on the film (some vague spoilers in his comments, perhaps):

Interview: Chris Claremont On The Wolverine, X-Men: Days Of Future Past & More!
http://whatculture.com/film/interview-chris-claremont-on-the-wolverine-x-men-days-of-future-past-more.php
Quote
The relationships in the story were also key. The idea behind them are that Yukio is the person who accepts him as he is much like Sabretooth is always trying to do, just get him to be the animal while Mariko is the ideal of what he wants to be. He is a ronin at the crossroads, forced to ask himself if he has it in him to be a samurai an honorable man worthy of the sword? Or is he just another schlep with a little talent, whos not as good as he thinks he is?

To me that was the defining element of the story, what gave it the heart on paper. That was what I was seeing in a cinematic sense for the first two acts of The Wolverine and then it turned into an average superhero film in the third act, which was rather heartbreaking.
Now we still found the last 30-40 minutes perfectly entertaining. It just doesn't fit in with the rest of the movie's style.

I felt like Viper also needed like 90 seconds of footage explaining her origin. Give her a tiny tragic and/or revenge-type back story, and she'd be interesting.

While it's impressive Jackman can bulk himself up so much at age 44, he seems almost Too Big. I dug out my X2 DVD and watched that (2003), and he barely seems the same actor physically. I guess maybe this one requires a lot more "out of shirt" time.  icon_razz

We have Ninjas in the Appalachians.  But we call 'em "Ninjers".  I once saw one take on a half dozen rev-uh-nooers.

...he lost...horribly...and within seconds.

i'm guessing ninjer training isn't quite up to that of their asian counterparts.

But seriously...ninjas?  This would've have been cool in the 80's, I guess.  Maybe have Wolverine driving a muscle van with a wizard painted on the side and perhaps a monkey sidekick he named Diablo.  But in 2013?

...well...okay, the monkey sidekick thing still works in 2013.  But ninjas?

Turns out it's not 165 minutes.  That was a mistake by the PR firm.  It's actually only going to have 10 minutes of extra material, making it 136 minutes.

Does that mean we can all calm down now?  icon_smile

I still feel like the film was all sorts of cool until the conclusion, and then it's as if Kevin Feige reached in and said, "NO NO NO! That's not Marvel! You gotta add this other crap!" Sigh. In a way, kind of like in "The Last Exorcism."

I finally watched this movie tonight. Why would his claws grow back after being cut off? Why would a robot on his heart stop his DNA from healing? Why would drilling into his claws cause him to grow old while the old guy grows young?

The claw thing is canon to the books, but to answer your question the claws have always been there as they are part of his skeletal structure and part of his particular mutation.  Once his healing factor kicked back in the bone claws regrew.

Actually, if I remember correctly, from the comics Magneto actually pulled the adamantium off his bones and through his pores and his healing factor broke after it saved his life from the ordeal.

As for the rest of you comments about the movie... made for a cool story I guess

Because I want the movie to make sense within the X-Men universe. Otherwise I am taken out of the movie wondering wtf is going on.

Robot: Wolverine is not invulnerable, so he can be killed.. I suspect that the robot thing was just constantly killing him.
drilling into claws: probably just using it as a way to get into his bone marrow to extract his powers
old/young: Wolverine is old. His power slows his aging and keeps him young. when he lost his powers completely by having the other guy take them, he started aging fast. the other guy got younger because the power started to "heal" him.
