According to AICN, a prequel for The Thing is going to start filming in March.  Could be really good!

Wasn't the thing frozen in ice for quite some time before the movie?  I don't remember off hand, I never really cared for the movie.

For some reason, horror/sci fi films and arctic regions is a match that always gets my butt in a theater seat.

So we sit in the theater for 1 hour and 55 minutes watching something frozen in a block of ice ,then humans come to the arctic and the movie ends?

Damnit.  I was hoping that either the Fantastic Four or Adamms Family would be involved.

in the original script, the main character had a hair dryer, but that cut 40 minutes out of the film

Spoiler for Hiden:
so,all but two of the Norwegians get killed at the end the rest of them either died or committed suicide with a cut throat razor(remember the frozen blood dripping...or not dripping should i say),The Thing goes into a doggy..the last two remaining Norwegians chase the dog across the ice in a Helicopter(one to shoot at the dog,one to fly the helicopter) to Kurt Russells camp...and the rest is in the first movie

there,we no longer need to see it icon_biggrin

the first one took a ton of liberties with the novella Who Goes There by John W. Campbell.  carpenter at least stayed a little closer to the story.

In the story, the thing was killed because either it or our planet had a Bluer sun, destabilizing it's unique cellular structure when it ventured outside.

Hey Sweden!

It actually was Norwegians. It's pointed out at several times in the movie and the helicopter has "Norge" written all over its said. Also, the guy who gets shot in the beginning speaks Norwegian (poorly. They got a non-native Norwegian to play the part). He says something to the effect of: "That's not a dog! It's some kind of thing!".

I am glad it was in Norwegian othewise it would have spoiled the whole movie right in the first few minutes.

You can get the same affect by sticking a popsicle on top of a pile of snow in your backyard, and sitting on a lawn chair watching it for 1 hour 55 minutes.  icon_razz

I loved Carpenter's movie, saw it myself in a theater in summer 1982 in Virginia. Somewhere here I shared my recollection of seeing a rat  saywhat crawling around through some spilled popcorn on the floor during the movie, so I kept my legs up the entire movie, afraid to move. If you've only seen it in its censored, butchered network/basic cable version (so much cussing and effects sequences are completely removed for network broadcast, it's like a different movie), you haven't really seen the movie. I have the remastered DVD released some years back.

Rob Bottin's special effects and makeup work was probably, to some extent, too far ahead of its time, and too over the top, and I think a lot of audiences didn't know what to make of it. As a 17 year old, I gobbled it up, but it was considered a summer box office movie disappointment that helped sour Carpenter on the idea of working with major studios. I didn't quite understand the late July release date -- I mean it's set in the Arctic, and it's directed by the director of Halloween. Sounds like a better Halloween release to me.

Carpenter's version fairly cries out for a SEQuel to resolve its "unresolved" ending. A prequel just sounds pretty pointless because you already know how it's going to end pretty much.

The original b/w film though is far more suspenseful and mysterious, most critics feel, until Arness and his ridiculous carrot-head suit show up in the finale.

I loved the PC version of the game several years back, but most played the poorly-controlling/aiming console version; and the PC version had a simple mod/hack that enabled a one-slot manual quicksave versus the exasperating checkpoint saves.

I find Carpenter's remake to be more suspenseful, to be honest.  Not knowing if the guy next to you (or guys, as it were) was going to eat your head at any point, not being able to escape due to the environment around you...man, I love carpenter's version.   icon_biggrin

I saw it at a drive-in years ago and it really scared the living crap out of me.  The scenes with the heated wire always stick in my mind.  Talk about nail biting.

So it's now a remake, not a prequel?

do you mean the name?,as i think it was always 'The Thing'

as far as i know this is still about the Norwegians

just looked it up on IMDB and found this
Quote
Is this film a remake of the 1982 film "The Thing"?
EditHistoryDelete

Yes and No. This film will actually serve as a prequel to the 1982 movie The Thing, as the film will detail the events that took place in the Norwegian camp from that film. However, since the previous film already told the events, this is both a remake on two accounts: Re-using the same formula from the 1982 film and re-making the events of the Norwegian base. Since it won't be an accurate puzzle piece and will be altered for today's audience, it is in fact a remake imitating a prequel. According to the screenwriter, painstaking care has been taken to assure that the prequel will take into account all the details about the Norwegians and their camp as seen in the original movie. The movie will end where the original film begins. However, other sources say that this movie will also continue where the original story ended.

The reason the movie has the same title as the first film is because the filmmakers felt that adding a subtitle such as "The Thing: Begins", "The Thing: Origins" and so forth, did not sound as reverential as just simply naming it "The Thing".

If you look up any of the proposed and existing "Thing" projects they all have "The Thing" as their title. Unfortunately, this confuses a lot of the public audience, but that's the title Universal wants.
