Will Eisner was a comic book god and The Spirit is one of the greatest characters from that genre.  I really hope Miller displays as much talent for the visuals of a film as he does in a comic book.

I haven't kept up on adult style comics in many years so never heard of it but the story sounds interesting and the cast seems cool. Plus didn't he do the movie 300? Which reminds me I still have that to watch on my DVR DOH!

The Spirit predates pretty much everything that is considered an 'adult style' comic- it came out in 1940.  Frank Miller, while involved with Zak Snyder's 300 movie, actually wrote the comic it was based on.  He also wrote Dark Knight Returns, Ronin, and a fantastic run on Daredevil back in the 80s which pretty much spawned the whole 'grim & gritty' style.  He is a HUGE Will Eisner fan and it should be very interesting how the movie ends up....

my only concern is how much this looks like sin city in every single shot in that teaser.  that unique look was bold the first time around but it just looks derivative in that preview.  i know it's only been used extensively in one prior film (the aforementioned sin city) but i fear the style may not be up to the task of two films.

Might I suggest using search, then typing in "The Spirit" movie? Third one down, second if this thread wasn't here.

No prob... I didn't find it on my first attempt either. I find using quotation marks for titles works better because the search engine will include (rather than parse out) noise words like "The ". smile

Trailer does look promising though.

Early word on the film is that it's a disaster.    (and that's the second early review...the first was much harsher) icon_frown

i was afraid of this.  from the trailers, all i was seeing was miller trying to redo sin city.  i don't think the style that rodriguez used for that film should become the defacto method for all comic book films, but if you're going to ape it at least try to add something of your own to it.  unfortunately, miller doesn't seem to have a good enough eye for film to do so.

The initial trailer I thought was awesome (sometimes the best trailers are the ones where there's no footage to show), although I was puzzled why it seemed to be using the music from Brian DePalma's 1988 Untouchables movie. The last Spirit trailer I saw, which seemed to be Samuel Jackson Chewing Up the Scenery as Another Wacko (Hey Sam! Try playing a non-wack job character who doesn't spend the entire movie yelling, and maybe you'll get better work! icon_razz), and had maybe 1.5 seconds of the actual Spirit character, completely lost me.

I think the no-name playing The Spirit himself is doomed because the whole movie has turned into Stunt Casting and Scenery Chewers.

Starting now, I have a new rule of thumb:  if the trailer voice over includes the words "visionary director" I will automatically place the name of that film in my "do not see" list.

The teaser trailer caught my eye a while back, but recent trailers have left me terribly unimpressed.  It looks too derivative of Sin City and the imagery just doesn't seem to fit, scenes in the trailer don't excite me or interest me, and overall I almost feel like the film looks boring.   icon_eek

And that is disappointing as I was looking forward to The Spirit.  But unfortunately trailers have left me rather underwhelmed.

Variety says:

plunges into a watery grave early on and spends roughly the next 100 minutes gasping for air. Pushing well past the point of self-parody, Miller has done Will Eisner's pioneering comicstrip no favors by drenching it in the same self-consciously neo-noir monochrome put to much more compelling use in "Sin City."

The Hollywood Reporter says:

truly a mess. Fans of "Sin City" and "300" will populate theaters for the film's opening, but boxoffice will fall quickly. The film's campiness might then pull in a different sort of aficionados -- those who celebrate films such as "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" for their silly acting and overripe dialogue.

I had hopes it might still turn out to be good, but I have yet to see even one positive word written about the movie.  I'm a huge Spirit fan and this sucks because it effectively means there will either never be another Spirit film, or we won't see another one for at least a couple of decades.  Box office receipts may save it if people are desperate and there's nothing else playing (see Scary Movies I, II, III, IV, XII and MXXII), but I have a sneaking suspicion that that won't happen with this one.

that's not necessariyl true.  Take the Hulk or Punisher movies for example: both movies did horrible (even though the Angst Lee Hulk broke 100 million domestically it didn't make more than its production costs) they had another version out in about 5 years.  Maybe someone will see the potential of making it without it being an overblown spectacle down the road.

Those characters are pretty big ticket items in the superhero world, though.  The spirit hasn't had a significant presence on comic book stands in many, many years.  The only reason this one got screen time is because Miller is a big time fanboi of Eisner's work.  I just wish he was a big time director to boot.   icon_cry

Yeah, chalk me up as someone who thinks that Sin City and 300 were good because they were new, and had decent dialog that was well acted, but the forumula can't last forever.  There's a way to keep the noir feeling and dialog style, without it sounding so campy.
