Judging movies by their trailers is pointless.  The sole purpose of a trailer is to get people into theaters.  The movie could be full of everything that the editorial says its lacking, and they'd still show the big battle scenes and exciting moments in the trailer.  Look at the trailer for Wrath of Khan.  It consists solely of Khan taunting, Kirk yelling, and ships battling, but the movie was certainly about more than that.  Just because a movie's trailer plays up the action elements doesn't mean that's all there is to it.

Yes.

Actually, I saw it on television a couple of years after it came out, and it worked really well in that format as an extended episode.

It's not a bad movie or story, per se, it's just way too long and slow and ponderous.

Anyone care to speculate as to what ship the Enterprise is fighting at 1:13 and 1:29? Enterprise-E (no way)? Re-imagined USS Reliant?

I really hope they don't use another time travel plot to justify that ship.

That said, I suspect the Federation probably used it to do some nasty things.

So, be careful of seemingly innocuous summer movie previews. Was reading one at Daily Beast yesterday, and suddenly it has a gigantic spoiler from this movie, no warning whatsoever. Pissed me off.  disgust

I'll grant that if you listen really carefully to the trailer, you might figure it out. But I hadn't, and just couldn't believe a lousy preview roundup would have something like that...

There was a print ad way back in the day for the Star Trek Role Playing Game (which, BTW, I own a copy signed by Walter Koenig) that went something like "Capt Kirk lost 76 crew members over the course of three years, Capt [Player Name] has lost zero even going so far as to fly his ship back into a supernova to rescue four of his crew.  Can you be a better Captain than Kirk?"

Something like that any way.

The point being that Kirk really was an impetuous foolhardy captain that got his crew killed because of his ego.

The Kirk in the new movies doesn't seem to fare much better.

That sounds like a research project.  I may either need to find or create a page dedicated to all the fallen crew members under the captain's command.

To be fair, one stood better chances of outright surviving a tour of duty on the Enterprise versus other Constellation class starships:

USS Constellation - entire crew died from planet eater. Captain Deckard piloted ship on kamikaze mission to destroy planet eater
USS Defiant - entire crew driven to insanity and killed each other
USS Excalibur - all hands lost in war games with M5 computer (installed on USS Enterprise)
USS Exeter - entire crew died from contamination to bateriological disease. Captain Tracey arreseted for violating Prime Directive
USS Hood - severely damaged in war games with M5 computer
USS Intrepid - almost all vulcan crew. Destroyed by huge single-celled organism whose energies were totally destructive to all known life. No survivors.

The Wed., May 15 IMAX shows have all sold out, so Paramount has decided to just push the general release date to Thursday, May 16:

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Sells out May 15th IMAX 3D Screenings; 2D and 3D Release Moved up to May 16th
http://collider.com/star-trek-into-darkness-release-date-moved-up/#more-253449
Quote
Like they did with Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Paramount chose to stagger the release of Star Trek Into Darkness by releasing the film in IMAX before releasing it into theaters.  The IMAX 3D screenings were set for May 15th starting at 8pm, and 2D and 3D screenings were set for the 17th.  Now that all IMAX 3D screenings for May 15th have been sold out, Paramount has decided to say “screw it” to the extra day, and will now release the film on all screens on May 16th.

As a film critic, I will tell you why this is a tad disconcerting.  While press in New York and L.A. have seen the film and released their reviews, critics in other cities such as Atlanta, Boston, and Oklahoma City (these are the ones I can confirm), will not get to see the movie until 9pm Wednesday night.  I’ve been doing this for seven years, and this is the first time the press screening was after the film’s release.  This also means print critics won’t be able to meet their deadlines (I’ll be up until 2am writing my review, and posting it immediately).  This doesn’t mean the film is bad, but Paramount seems seriously worried about critics chiming in.
I guess the optimist would say, fans are clamoring for more tickets so much, that they moved up the release date a day to make fans happy.

Pessimists will say Paramount wants to get the movie into theaters faster before critics get their knives out. Since many reviews are already out, esp. overseas, it seems a little late for the pessimists' conspiracy theory imho. smile

Anywho, I'll probably see if I can get a ticket for next Thursday. I'm not keen on IMAX moving to reserved seating (even if STID has 30 minutes of IMAX-camera-filmed stuff), and really prefer the ETX screen at AMC now, so I might aim for that.

I actually love the reserved seating at my local theater.  They offer motion seats called D-Box seating and they are reserved only. Nothing quite as satisfying as ordering tickets a couple days in advance, walking into a packed theater 5min before previews start, and sitting in the exact seat you want.

I don't understand why reserved seating for IMAX is a problem either. Just like TEW, I love that I can buy my tickets and choose my exact seat days ahead of time, then walk into the theater right before the show starts and have a guaranteed awesome seat. When I do decide to see a movie on short notice, I can still use my computer, phone, or even the kiosk in the theater lobby to see exactly what seats are left and pick one that I like...no worries about getting there early for a good seat, or I can pick a different time if I don't see a decent seat. I think it's a great idea, especially for a large theater like IMAX.

That's why I'll be buying my tickets for Star Trek in advance and locking in my favorite seat for opening weekend icon_cool

It's an interesting convergence that tickets to plays are sold in the same manner. Do you pay a "convenience charge" when you buy movie tix online?

Yes, they do charge extra for online ticket purchases, but I have been buying my movie tickets online for quite a while now and paying extra isn't really a problem.  I remember having 6 tickets to The Phantom Menace without ever leaving home, while people waited in line for days and never got a ticket.... If only I could go back in time and warn myself to temper my expectations....

Of course, to all those people waiting in line, you walked past them to D-Bag seating.
