latest supposed reveal of who Cumberbatch is playing, this time by Karl Urban:

Spoiler for the villain is:
Gary Mitchell

That would be cool.

Oh yeah, well I had breakfast with DeForest Kelley! I wish he would move out of my closet.

He's been dead for 13 years, so not likely to be doing much moving. Unless, you know, zombie apocalypse.

That's it! I have the storyline for ST2. Harry Mudd shows up with some miracle tonic he is selling that turns everyone into zombies!

well now they're saying he's not playing him, but he is playing a canon character.

Quote
TrekMovie.com: A couple of weeks ago you were on a radio show and you confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch is not playing Gary Mitchell in the sequel. Then last week Karl Urban says he is playing Gary Mitchell. Both canít be true.

Roberto Orci: All I can say is that when I did that radio interview I had just been doing 22 hours of press. I had just got off a flight from New ZealandÖ

TrekMovie.com: Nice callback, but are you sticking with your original comment and it isnít Gary Mitchell.

Roberto Orci: I would say that I never lie. While Karl tests all those hypo spray props on himself [laughs]

Quote
TrekMovie.com: OK, I want to try and get something out of you that is actually new about the movie. Kind of like you did on the radio show but I will name a guest actor in the sequel and you will say if they are playing a new character you created or one from the original Star Trek canon.

Roberto Orci: OK, Iíll play.

TrekMovie.com: OK letís start with Alice Eve. Canon or new?

Roberto Orci: Canon

TrekMovie.com: Noel Clarke?

Roberto Orci: New

TrekMovie.com: I assume that also goes for Nanzeen Contractor, who plays his wife?

Roberto Orci: Yes, new.

TrekMovie.com: Peter Weller

Roberto Orci: New.

TrekMovie.com: Joseph Gatt

Roberto Orci: New.

TrekMovie.com: OK and the big one, Benedict Cumberbatch.

Roberto Orci: Canon.

I'm as confident of this being the title as I was of "Blue Harvest" and "Revenge of the Jedi" in 1983.  Bring your own!

Of course it's good to be able to use Trek as a verb now. Instead of threatening to "open a can of Star Trek" on someone's posterior, you can threaten to "Star Trek them!"  icon_razz

They should just make an entry that deals explicitly with Kirk's love life.  Call it Star Trek: Chicks Ahoy!

The real question is.... is "Star Trek" a noun-phrase or a verb-phrase?

I guess at work I'll start saying, "I"m gonna Star Trek out for a sandwich!" and "I really need to Star Trek to the restroom!"  icon_razz

Which is my stupid way of saying I think the title is silly, but I hope the movie is entertaining, and at the very lease, it sounds like JJ might tone down the lenses flares a bit. You might not have to wear sunglasses in the theater this time. Bring your own!

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Ė Approved Synopsis 11/26/12

Spoiler for Hiden:
In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness.

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Even looking at the poster from a small bit away from my screen, I can barely see the words "Star Trek"

Imagine looking at it from across the street on a bus stop or while driving up on a billboard.

Plus, it seems a little too reminiscent (i.e. plagaristic) of the Batman posters.

Not saying the movie will be bad at all, BTW, just not loving the poster.

Trailer released (not the 9-minutes footage to run in front of The Hobbit)

First Trailer for STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Plus 25 Images from the Trailer

HD version (Apple's site):

Very ponderous, with everyone looking like they're in a really sad perfume commercial. icon_smile I just hope they don't forget to have a sense of fun, which was what I enjoyed most about the first film. Though I gather this trailer is mostly to establish Cumberbund... Batch... As vengeful bad ass.

Spoiler Re: Japanese trailer

Spoiler for Hiden:
It looks like they're doing a visual callback to Spock's death, but I can't believe they'd do that. 1. It's too early in the reboot universe to impact the lives of Kirk, Spock and McCoy. 2. That death was so iconic that there is no way that they could rival it even if they waited 5 more films. I hope that it is just a fakeout.

It may be there to make us think particular things about Cumberbatch's character(which the rest of the trailer doesn't necessarily shy away from), though I kahn't put my finger on who they want us to think he's playing.

As for the blonde:

Spoiler for Hiden:
Rumor is that she's playing Carol Marcus.  Yet another connection.
