Thanks for the feedback in the previous thread. I think we've narrowed it down to a couple of names.  The name that we are thinking of is Souma (pronounced Soma). My wife likes it, I think it's fine, and most importantly it has the right number of strokes in the kanji (ridiculous superstition). For anyone who is curious, the kanji for Souma is:
想真
The first kanji means "idea or think" and the second kanji means "truth or reality". I especially like the kanji because it's easy to write. The first kanji is made up of the kanji for tree, eye and heart (left, right, bottom) and the second kanji is made up of ten, eye, one, eight (top to bottom). All of this is super easy to write, I just need to remember the correct order.

One thing I want to make sure of is, can anyone think of any negative connotations to the word Soma in English?  I happen to know that there is one but I'm just wondering how well known this might be. I actually kind of like the name because of it but my well-read sister is appalled. My 21 year old sister has no idea what it might refer to-kids these days.  Roll Eyes
Thanks for your opinions. smile

Soma is the name of a hindu god and also the name of an intoxicating drink.  Theres also a drug called Soma as well as a women lingerie company.  It was also a famous punk rock concert venue in San Diego.   Not sure if any of those are considered bad.  Im not sure what connotation your sister finds appalling but I dont know of one.  Are you referring to its use in A Brave New World?  I guess that could be found objectionable.

Based on the root of your name choice Soma, which could be an "idea of truth"  I recommend you go with Epiphany for a name.  And while I jest, I just realized that I actually really like Epiphany, as a name.

Have you ever read Aldous Huxley's Brave New World?  That's all I can think of when I hear soma.

The Huxley association makes me think of opiates, and a girl named Opiate would be destined for notoriety, if nothing else.

But if you spell it Souma everyone will pronounce it as either Soo-ma or Sow-ma, so it's kind of a moot point.

There's a popular internet radio station called Soma FM, mostly different varieties of electronic music. Anyone who knows about the station probably likes it, so no bad connotations would come from the association.

I forget, is this name for a boy? I ran it by the wife and her initial reaction was that Soma sounded a bit feminine, but otherwise she liked it.

When I hear Soma, the only thing I think of is Soma Cruz from the Castlevania series.

I would have to google it to make sure but I think that is a transit district or something in the Bay Area.

EDIT: It is a district in SF. South of Market.
