the Sci-fi channel blows the shark:

Quote
Up in the sky. It’s a bird. It’s a plane. No, it’s a…shark! A supersized storm sucks sharks from the ocean and hurls them onto land in the new Syfy Original Movie Sharknado, premiering Thursday, July 11 at 9PM (ET/PT).

In the movie, regulars of a beachside bar including owner Fin (Ian Ziering/Beverly Hills 90210), bartender Nova (Casie Scerbo/Make It Or Break It) and local drunk George (John Heard/Home Alone) team up with Fin’s ex-wife April (Tara Reid/Scrubs) to investigate the ecological nightmare that has sharks swimming through the streets of Los Angeles and falling from the skies. Sharknado is a production of The Asylum.

OK, who here isn't morbidly curious?

The problem with these types of SyFy films is that they know that they're making this cheesy, over-the-top schlock. I prefer when it's a film made by someone who thinks they're making high art, but instead turn out said schlock. There's an earnestness that is lacking in the first example.

I'm not decrying this film for lack of art; I just prefer it when the filmmakers think that THEY are making art, instead of the crap it really is (Ed Wood, Tommy Wiseau, etc.).

well it was popular enough to get a sequel.  I recorded it, ended up dozing off halfway through it only to wake up to the legendary sight of a man wielding a chainsaw and diving upwards into the mouth of a falling shark.

here's the official ratings:

Quote
Syfyís original movie Sharknado delivered 1.4 million viewers Thursday night. Thatís lower than many previous Syfy breakout titles, like 2010′s Sharktopus (2.5 million viewers), 2011′s Mega Python Vs. Gatoroid (2.4 million) and last yearís Piranhaconda (1.8 million). Itís even a bit below the far less buzzy Chupacabra vs. the Alamo (1.5 million), which ran earlier this year. Syfy points out that the movie skewed younger than usual (a good thing) and its 18-49 performance was up 29 percent from the channelís movie average this year.

I wonder when we'll see Chupashark, Mega Recluse vs Georgia, Jellymonkey and finally Sandtuna.....

Me too,  I have the feeling the replay tonight is going to pull bigger numbers than the premier. Just from all of the buzz and word of mouth surrounding the film. I know Twitter blew up with it and Howard Stern has been talking about it all week.

They have announced the title to the sequel.  It is brilliant and perfect.

Spoiler for Hiden:

+------------------------------------------------------------------------------+

The 'Sharknado' sequel has a name, and it's perfect
2013-08-09 17:04:05.910 GMT

By Rebecca Tucker
Aug. 9 (National Post) -- Few films titles tell the entire
story in a word quite like Sharknado. Say it out loud: Shark.
Nado. What else could it be about? It's either about a tornado
full of sharks or a shark made of tornados, and whichever one
of those totally implausible things sounds the most plausible
is also the most accurate description of the SyFy film that
aired in July to instant viral success.
So it's only fitting that the film's sequel - which will
air in 2014 - would be given an equally descriptive and
brilliant title:
    Sharknado 2: The Second One.
What more do you need to know? It could only have been
better if SyFy had called it The Second Sharknado Is The Second
Sharknado - which they practically did! With its greatness,
Sharknado 2: The Second One joins such esteemed sequel titles
as The Last Exorcism Part II (making 2012's The Last Exorcism
actually The Second-Last Exorcism), Rambo: First Blood Part 2
(Rambo: Second Blood?) and every single Fast and Furious
sequel, in infamy.

announces( http://arts.nationalpost.com/2013/07/17/sharknado-

Sharknado 2: The Second One is a crowd-sourced title,
culled from more than 5,000 Twitter suggestions. "Since Twitter
played such a huge role in the success of the original movie,
we wanted to use that platform to ask our fans to name
Sharknado 2," Thomas Vitale, executive vice president of Syfy's
programming and original movies, said in a statement. "This
response is another reminder of how Sharknado has become a pop
culture phenomenon. We want to thank all our viewers for their
wonderful contributions to keeping up the shark-mentum."
Which, of course, means there is only one possible title
for Sharknado's third instalment: Sharknado 3: The Shark-
mentuming.
