The only good bug is a dead bug!

And producer Neal Moritz believes that the humans need to battle the bugs again.

Moritz has hired the scriptwriting team Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz to pen a remake for the 1997’s “Starship Troopers.”

Miller and Stentz recently wrote the scripts for this year’s comic book movies “Thor” and “X-Men: First Class.”

The original film was directed by Paul Verhoeven and starred Casper Van Diem, Denise Richards, Dina Meyer, Jake Busey and Neil Patrick Harris.

The film is about a group of military trainees under a fascist government forced to confront an alien insect race. The story is based off a story by Robert A. Heinlein.

There are other sequels to “Starship Troopers,” which mainly went straight-to-video.

A “Starship Troopers” remake will not be the only Verhoeven directed film to be remade recently. “Total Recall” remake with Colin Farrell will be in theaters next year and a “Robocop” remake is already in the works.

here's hoping they stick closer to the book and we get stuff that was left out in 1997, like power armor.

Yeah, I really liked Veerhoven's Starship Troopers for the satire, but when you think of the book, the first thing that pops into your mind is the armor.  I'm sure they can pull that off now (hell, it exists).  I look forward to seeing it.

ditto!  my fav - when the news agency censors the cow while being fed to the bug - but then shows all the mangled humans post-battle
i also loved all the ww2-esque "do your part" and "would you like to know more" flashes

Why?

Why?

Why?

Any remake they do will not have the wonderful satire of Verhoeven's film. Pointless remake.

Loved the first Starship Troopers, hard to believe it's already been 15 years. (Back then Dina Meyer was hot!)

If the second and third ones had spent some real budgets to work with, they may have turned out pretty good too.. but instead it looks like an amateur roaming around with a shaky camcorder.

Even if it has the same low budget 2 and 3 had, I'll still probably give it a rent anyway.. but if it has a big budget like the first, there's still hope!

I can't say I share the enthusiasm here for the 1st film. I felt it fell far too short of the story in  Heinlein's novel. That said, 15 years feels too soon for a remake. Somehow a remake of a movie less than 25 years old just doesn't seem right to me.

While I do think the film is great, it really didn't capture the book at all.  In that regard, we haven't really seen a proper Starship Troopers movie.

If you read the book, I don't see how you can ask why.  Whether you liked the movie or not, it wasn't very close to the book except in overall concept and some character names.

Yep, the book deserves a film adaptation that's more true to the source.  And there's plenty of good content and tech in the book to make a good movie.  This book influenced a ton of sci fi fiction (pretty much anything with space marines or soldiers launching from ships).  The "in armor" battle scenes in the book are so well done, it's like reading a modern war novel with mechanized and heavy armor units.  That's such a key part of the reading experience, and none of that was in the movie.

Let's see how this pans out. Hopefully, for the better. Recently, as a filmmaker, I had been thinking about the process of adaptation.. specifically after having seen Zack Snyder's inert frame-by-frame adaptation of Alan Moore's 'Watchmen' Graphic novel. I watched his movie right after having read Moore's novel.. and what I realized is that Snyder shouldn't have made a literal adaptation of the graphic novel. The movie Snyder made lacks much narrative momentum. Most of the moments from the graphic novel are there. It just didn't work as a movie. I was left wishing Snyder would have taken some liberties and actually made a more cohesive, plot-driven movie.

Another example of the perils of adaptation is Stephen King's 'The Shining'. I've always argued that Stanley Kubrick's movie is better than the ABC TV mini-series Stephen King insisted on back in 90s. The miniseries is just awful, specially the kid they cast on the part of Daniel. Kubrick actually capture the deeply haunting and creepy tone of the novel. King bitched and moaned about Kubrick's movie for years. Kubrick did capture what the book was about in his film. 'The Shining' never needed a literal film adaptation.

Like others, I think that if this is actually a remake of the Starship Troopers movie, it's a dumb idea. If they want to make another adaptation of the book, that's fine. Like there's Kubrick's "The Shining" and the tv movie version that supposedly closer to the book. Or "The Last Man on Earth", "The Omega Man" and "I Am Legend". Same source material, unrelated movies.

This, being an entertainment source, simply says "Starship Troopers remake!" and doesn't have the important information.

I love Stephen King (will probably always be my favorite author) but he is a total idiot when it comes to screenplays and movie/TV adaptions of his books.  The only decent one was The Mist and they remained faithful 99% of the book only to fuck the ending up to the point of no return.

I really liked the Trooper movie for the camp but it really was nothing like the book (which I liked much better).  I'm looking forward to the remake.

I think that's a different project.  the remake was announced just December 2011 with them just starting to think about a script, I doubt they'd be able to slap together a CGI movie in time for a summer release.
