From your lips to God's ears.  My only fear is that it will flop because it doesn't have a toy franchise in place already.  That or it actually has a story and confuses a lot of average movie goers.   icon_wink

Tickets already purchased to see it again Thursday night. The kids are currently debating the movie's standing versus the original Star Wars films :O

I purchased two of these prints at the showing, which were only available at this screening (though I imagine the rest of the print run will be made available at some point), one of which I'll be putting on eBay:

Well, this is completely unexpected: A gushing review in the Boston Globe (link is paywalled).

Quote
“Pacific Rim” is, hands down, the blockbuster event of the summer — a titanic sci-fi action fantasy that has been invested, against all expectations, with a heart, a brain, and something approximating a soul.

...

The trailers make “Pacific Rim” look dumber than it actually is — a depressingly calculated move on the studio’s part

Gotta say I lost interest as soon as I saw the first trailer. But

Quote
Del Toro is the best argument (and maybe the only one) for the fan-boy mentality that has trapped modern Hollywood in an eternal adolescence of comic-book heroes and destructo power fantasies. His influences are varied and inclusive, and here they range from manga to “Blade Runner” to the old-school movie monsters of the film’s dedicatees, Ray Harryhausen and Toho Studios’s Ishiro Honda.

Suddenly, I'm interested.

Saw it, it was amazing. A great summer blockbuster.

It does have Del Toro's strange pacing, where he throws in a 4th or 5th act, and the tension going down to build up yet again for those acts, but that's his thing.

There's stuff in the credits that's fun, sit through.

This movie has got every set piece it needs. It does everything right, and never overstays its welcome.

It's bubblegum so if you go in expecting realism, well, yeah. Also, most of what you see in the trailers are covered in the first 5 minutes of the flick, so don't be thinking you've seen everything when you've seen the trailer.

Spoiler for Hiden:
I kinda wanted to see more of the russian / chinese warriors, honestly. It would have been cool if there were a few more less traditional Jaeger displayed in there - even if it was a montage of different designs that were ultimately destroyed.

Just saw it today and thought it was awesome.  Some small criticisms, but overall it's the best kaiju movie in a long time.  Some cheesy bits but overall was still a great ride.  I can't wait for the flood of copy kaiju movies.  biggrin

Spoiler for Hiden:
My biggest complaint is just that there were not enough full-on shots of the kaiju themselves.  Lots of quick cuts and things obscured by speed, water, buildings, etc.

Specifically, the last fight down by the portal was a bit too quick cut and I didn't get a very good feeling of who was fighting what.  It didn't help that under water both Jaegers looked pretty similar a lot of the time and the kaiju were obscured, fast moving and somewhat similar as well.  It took me a little bit to even realize that Gipsy Danger lost an arm since they really didn't call it out at all.  And they made a big deal out of the first category 5 kaiju but didn't really show what was special about it.

Having said all of that, I can't wait to get this on Blu-ray and I hope there is an epic special edition.

Sorry, thought you were referring to how many Kaiju, not Jaegers.

Yeah, the aussie machine and the US ones are similar in design though I didn't personally get them confused. The chinese and russian ones were far more distinct. I found that the Gipsy looked very Iron-man like, especially with the turbine in the chest.

I swear, it rained more in Pacific Rim then it did in The Crow. Tongue

Loved it.  Was a bit surprised to find the 11:15 am matinee priced imax 3D showing was pretty vacant though.  Hope that's not indicative of the box office take for this fun action film on release.

It had some issues, but it was far more interesting than all three of the Transformer films put together.  I thought they took Charlie Day's character too far from the story too often, but was surprised to find how much I liked him in the movie.  Especially when teamed with that actor from Torchwood who creeps me out and the great Ron Perlman.

Speaking of which, I love that del Toro is so close to a handful of actors and uses them whenever possible.  When a director is working with someone he's genuinely fond of, it really shows on the screen.

p.s. Catch it in imax 3D if you have the chance.  Seriously.  It's worth the extra coin.
