anyways, time for a new Men in Black movie, with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones in glorious 3D.  at least they can safely say they are rushing out the sequels in this series.

I agree, especially when it's tacked on and not designed in mind for it. Also hate when movies use 3D in their title in reference to a 3rd sequel.

Given that they just announced that the actors have signed and filming hasn't begun, there will not be any "tacked on" 3D like there was in Alice in Wonderland and Clash of the Titans.  The director will be making decisions and shooting knowing what he's looking for in terms of effects utilizing the tech.  That doesn't mean that they're going to be good decisions, but there's a possibility that it will be used to good effect like it has in Up and How to Train Your Dragon (the two 3D movies that I have seen).

If they can get the same writing quality as the first and the 3D in the same league as Avatar, I'll be glad to spend the extra bucks to rent the glasses. Just don't skimp on the cinematography. That kind of crap can put a dent in how well 3D movies are respected.

Steven Spielberg to Executive Produce

CULVER CITY, Calif., May 7, 2010 – Columbia Pictures announced today that Men in Black III will be released in 3D on May 25, 2012. Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are returning to produce and Barry Sonnenfeld, who directed the first two installments of the blockbuster franchise, will direct the film from a screenplay written by Etan Cohen, based on the comic book by Lowell Cunningham. Steven Spielberg is set to executive produce.

Deals are set for Will Smith, Sonnenfeld and the producing team to return to the blockbuster franchise with the intent to begin production by this fall and the studio is in advanced negotiations with Tommy Lee Jones to reprise his role as Agent Kay. Josh Brolin is also in talks to star as a young Agent Kay.

Commenting on the announcement, Jeff Blake, Chairman of Sony Pictures Worldwide Marketing and Distribution said, “Sony’s summer of 2012 will get off to a red hot start with an incredible new 3D adventure for the Men in Black. We couldn’t be more excited that the original filmmaking team responsible for the first two worldwide hits is reuniting for this third installment. We love where the story is taking Agents Jay and Kay and know this new chapter will deliver a fresh fun twist for fans of the franchise while also introducing the Men in Black to a whole new generation of moviegoers.”

The first two Men in Black films, which were released in 1997 and 2002, went on to become two of the most successful films in Columbia Pictures history, taking in more than $1 billion combined worldwide. The first film in the franchise won an Academy Award(r) for Best Makeup and was nominated for two other Oscars(r).

God I hope they don't screw this up like the last one. That one had SO MUCH potential, with getting K back and everything. They couldn't even get that part right. Though, admittedly that was the best portion of the film. But that isn't saying much.

New Trailer.  I think my primary interest has to do with Josh Brolin playing Tommy Lee Jones playing K.  Will Smith seems to overdo it a bit, but 3 seems to return to what made the first film fun (which was noticeably missing in 2).

One thing that scared me a bit was an article citing internal sources that said they were writing the script AS they were filming the movie.  I guess they had some issues with the original writing team and they brought in people to "punch it up", but they ended up essentially rewriting it.  That's usually not a good sign.

Collider.com pretty much trashed it, although the reviewer felt Josh Brolin was fun enough to perhaps lead the franchise with a new partner if they wanted to move the franchise forward (Will Smith being 43 now and maybe a bit old to be yelling MIB one-liners).

The trailer looked good to me.  It certainly seemed more likely for success than 22 Jump Street.

Knocks Avengers off the top,and makes $202 million worldwide

The Will Smith comedy was at $202 million at the worldwide box office Sunday, after opening No. 1 in 104 foreign countries. That includes $19 million from both China and Russia.

It will finish the Memorial Day weekend on top in the U.S. too.

Parts of it were better. I suppose completely forgettable is an improvement over abysmal, but it's a tight race..

The gf and I saw this recently in 2D.  There were obvious 3Dified moments, but I don't really feel like I missed anything there.

We found the movie amusing, but certainly not a raucous comedic romp.  Brolin was excellent as K.  Smith had his moments as well, but felt a bit forced at times.

Given the budget and the rapdi fall off in revenues, I would imagine that this is the last we'll see of this particular franchise until they want to reboot it in 20 years.

The third installment in the popular franchise starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones has already grossed $391.6 million overseas from 79 foreign countries, performing best in Japan and Russia. Combined with the film's domestic tally of $152.7 million, the movie has now collected $544.3 million globally.

IMDB has the budget estimate at $230 million.
