Ben Affleck is your new Batman.
Is it April 1? No? Obviously he was great in Daredevil playing a dark, brooding super hero... Oh wait he wasn't. And he was great as Jack Ryan... Oh wait, he wasn't.

I'd be actually excited if he was directing a Batman reboot. Imho his true talent's in directing now. Casting him as Batman seems the worst kind of stunt casting. I'll admit he has a great chin though. icon_razz

Ben Affleck was pretty good in Daredevil.  There, I said it.

Still, a missed opportunity to cast Idris Elba.

Ben Affleck is your new Batman.

I found Man of Steel to unfortunately be somewhat mediocre.  I really WANTED to like it, but was ultimately underwhelmed.  I just don't see this acting choice working out.  I'd be thrilled to be proven wrong, and while he has turned in a number of poor performances, films like Argo and The Town still give me hope (despite it being rather fleeting).  At least with low expectations, perhaps I will be surprised.

Add in Gone Baby Gone to that list(his directorial debut). In fact that list of movies IMO shows his best talent is as a director. I'd be more stoked to hear he was doing that for the movie than playing Batman.

Agreed.  He has definitely impressed as a director more so than an actor.

He is a superb supporting actor, but not a leading man.

He was great in Boiler Room, Good Will Hunting, Smokin Aces. He was SO good in Shakespeare in Love.

While I think Ben's a better choice than say, Pee Wee Herman or Steve Buscemi  icon_razz, imho it's more a concern that when Ben's called upon to portray rage/anger, it really doesn't work. Not (arguably, DD has some fans) in Daredevil or Armageddon or Pearl Harbor. I think he's been fine in the last couple films he's directed (Argo and The Town), but his characters don't really rage that much.

OTOH? I remember when Michael Keaton was announced in 1988 or so (this was pre-Internet), the rage in letters to movie magazines was he was too short, too thin, and his face was decidedly unimposing. No problems there with Ben. He's tall enough, muscular enough, and has a great chin.

Keaton had at least shown some edginess in Clean and Sober (1988), and arguably Beetlejuice at least showed he had some chops at portraying anger and a dark side.

I've seen a few columns pop up saying they'd be more excited about Affleck as a Batman film director than as actor portraying him so I'm not the only one saying that. Chris Nolan really only had two films of note under his belt -- Memento and Insomnia -- when picked for the 2005 Batman Begins. So it would've even been a nice parallel for Affleck who's directed three films (Gone Baby Gone, The Town and Argo).

Some cynics say the reason to choose an Affleck type is simply to get the Internet up in a lather about Man of Steel 2. Is Zak Snyder really that manipulative? Who knows. He's long made it clear he could give a rat's arse what fans think of his choices, so probably he doesn't much care.

"Hey Robin, go get the Bat-Caaah!. We got a wicked case of a breakout at Aaaakham Asylum! The Riddlah's goons ah doin' all kinds of retahded stuff. How you like them apples?"

Seriously, I wanted to punch myself in the face repeatedly on hearing this news. The only news that could have been worse was that Zac Snyder dropped out and Joel Schumacher stepped in for directing duties with Ryan Reynolds as Batman.

My interest in this movie went to below zero. It's actually in negative numbers now. Like instead of no interest, I actively want to somehow negatively see it. Like bend the laws of physics so that I not only don't see it, I'm not even aware it exists.

There was a list floating around of rumors as to who would be Batman, and I hated everyone on that list. Yet every person on that list would have been 1000 times better than Ben Affleck. I want to just scoop out the part of my brain with a spoon that knows this information.

Thats the second time BlackJack, that you have mentioned his 'great chin' on this page  paranoid

and yeah, thanks(!) for reminding me he was in Armageddon and Pearl Harbor

Someone mentioned that people were complaining when Heath Ledger was announced as The Joker,i must of been off the internet that day because i don't remember any backlash from that

And surely BJ,when you are talking about Michael Keaton's Acting Chops we should be talking Multiplicity  Tongue

christ, did the split screen thing for each character look that obvious in the film?

YK, this is silly.  I remember how the fan boys raged about Heath Ledger being picked as the Joker, which turned out to be inspired casting.  Affleck has certain turned in fine performances recently in Argo and Town so why not wait and give him a chance?  I really don't get all the premature rage.  Sure if he stinks in the new movie, I'll be upset, but I'll be upset then, not before when there's really no reason to.  It's just nerd rage at this point smile

People seem to have missed the finer details - Jennifer Lopez as Catwoman.  In an inspired subplot, Bats tries to seduce the lesbian Catwoman while cursing pretty much every other word.  See also, Gigli.

It doesn't help, though, that Affleck has already ruined one of my other favorite superheroes - Daredevil. It's not like he's an unknown. I have evidence that he can destroy my favorite characters!

Ironically, Mrs. Ben Affleck would have been a reasonable choice for WW back in the day (though Lucy Lawless would have been THE best choice).
