The city just signed a deal with the conspiracy theorists to let them have a few tickets to the main shindig and have another ceremony of their own a couple hours later in a nearby parking lot.  I fully expect the main event to sustain some sort of whackjob disruption on live television.

Someone told me that CBS was getting a lot of flack for doing this, like it's disrespectful somehow?  I don't quite get it.

I don't think it's disrespectful.

That said, I think it's another shot at the standard American concept of commemorating everything to death, and only caring about ourselves.  I think four days of coverage from 50 years ago is completely excessive and unnecessary.  Put it on the CBS website so people who want it can look at it, that's fine.  I've been to the JFK travelling museum, and it was really cool.  That said, I have absolutely no interest in seeing TV Coverage from 1963.  Nor do I want to see TV Coverage from September 11, 2001, or January 28, 1986.  I don't want to wallow in depressing moments of the past.

As a country, we're completely self-centered and short-sighted.  Look at the Time magazine cover last week:  Around the world, the cover story is about the disaster in the Philippines.  Here?  JFK.   And we wonder why the rest of the world thinks that we're idiots.

while I dont plan on watching, I can understand why.  Its been 50 years since the JFK assassination and the circumstances are still considered a mystery.  This event completely changed the course of history and altered our national identity.  I believe it marks a huge turning point in american society, where we lost our innocence and the green grass and picket fence idealism of the 50's disappeared.  If the rest of the world thinks we're idiots, so be it but if it were the Queen of England that was assassinated 50 years ago, what do you think would be on the cover of their magazines?
