no word on which book, if any, will be the basis of the movie.  Chris Pine is set to star as Jack.  it's neat to see Branagh branching out, Thor wasn't too shabby and with him on board hopefully the next film in the Ryan universe won't get turned into an action vehicle.

I have high hopes for this, a good producer and an actor with the potential to put in a very decent Jack Ryan performance. And man would I ever love it if Branagh was in it.  I just hope they get a good screenwriter.

in addition to directing, Branagh is going to be the villain.  they also have a summary of the plot:

Quote
Pine's Jack Ryan is an ex-Marine who works as a successful financial analyst in Moscow. He discovers a plot by his employer to finance a terrorist attack designed to collapse the U.S. economy, and must race against time to save America and his wife.

Branagh is making a deal to play the Russian villain, who with the help of the local government, masterminds a plot to destroy America's economy by making the dollar worthless.

sounds like they are mixing an origin story on how he joins the CIA with parts from Debt of Honor.

then I realized he didn't direct it.

No, it's now going to be about Meg Ryan fighting terrorists.

If they had made that while she was still cute, I would totally watch that.

they're looking to cast Kiera Knightley as Jack's wife now.

Kenneth Branagh is still directing but Chris Pine has been replaced by Rick Astley who is going to portray Chris Pine acting as Jack Ryan.

I still wish Alec Baldwin (circa 1992, not as he is now  icon_smile) had gotten at least one "Jack Ryan solo movie" (Ryan's more of a supporting character in Hunt for Red October). Ford was OK in his films, the Ben Affleck take was forgettable, and I think in part cause Ben just hadn't aged enough to bring some gravity to the part.

I was a huge Harrison Ford fan, but he seemed much older (he was about 50 at the time of Patriot Games; Baldwin was about 32) than Clancy had written the character to be. As for Pine, I love him in ST so far, and he was fine in Unstoppable, but I still feel like he's another Young Actor that Hollywood tried to stuff down our throats in too many films in too short a period of time, before they'd really earned their stripes, and the roadside is getting littered with such actors (Ryan Reynolds, Taylor Kitsch, Josh Lucas, etc., etc., etc.) like that. I'm not yet convinced Pine won't be one of Those Guys in a couple years. If I were his agent -- even though I'd suck at it  icon_razz -- I'd probably tell him to slow down, look for better scripts, do an independent film etc.

Maybe Afleck could play this part instead in the inevitable sequel?

also, while A Sum of All Fears was pretty forgettable, I have an appreciation for Liev Schreiber's role in it.  I'd cast him as Sam Fisher if a movie was ever made.
