this time starring Karl Urban, due out in September: (nice helmet) some post production clips: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=2CSu3rJNoMQI'm not sure if it will be the same without Sylvester 'I AM DA LAW' Stallone, but they seem to be going with oversized helmets this time around for a more comic book feel, yet they seem to be losing the added glitz from Dredd's comic book look: (Stallone as Dredd) on the plus side there's sure to be no Rob Schneider for the useless comic relief schtick.

I don't know I kind of liked Sandra Bullock in the original Judge Dredd. It's amazing after so many years she still looks so good.

Trailer looks pretty kick ass. He even delivers the classic line and doesn't sound at all like Stallone. Hopefully, they won't let him take off the helmet. My only issue is that MegaCity One doesn't look so mega, but that might be hard to pull off realistically with their budget, so no big deal. Oh, and change the title CeeKay. It's just Dredd now.

From IMDB, so who knows if true: "Unlike the previous Judge Dredd movie, Karl Urban has confirmed that the helmet will never come off to keep true to the comic book character." By the way, that is some frown the cartoon version of Dredd has up above - I don't think a human mouth can do that.

Awesome news about the helmet. It's a constant problem in these comic book movies. You want someone good to play the lead, but producers (and I'm betting agents) can't get past the idea that, yeah, his face is going to be covered for all the climactic scenes (or, in the case of JD, all the scenes). It bothered me that Spider-man's mask was always in tatters by the end, for example.

Looking forward to it. Even liked the Stallone one despite not knowing much about the series. Sidekick is pretty decent to look at as well. (This one, not Rob Schneider... I like him, just not that way.)

Stallone was physically perfect for the role, but his ego wouldn't let him keep the helmet on for the duration of the film. The mystique of what Dredd REALLY looks like is a huge chunk of the character's charm. He IS the personification of a judge. No personal life should be allowed in any story that features his character.

Yes, that was the movie. It does seem like they saw it and said "wouldn't that exact same story look good in the Dredd universe?!"

I think it is more bad luck that they're coming out after The Raid than them copying it. of course they could have seen the popularity of The Raid and decided to try to bring up similarities for the 'if you liked this you'll like Dredd!' effect.

I agree it looks more like the comics but just slavishly following the comics doesn't mean it is good. Things that work great as drawings don't necessarily translate into real life.

it would be interesting to hear if he had issues seeing with the helmet on. it looks like the bottom ends of the red X on the front look like they could have limited his field of vision.

8 out of 10 from IGN: In many ways, Dredd feels like an action film from a simpler time, like Assault on Precinct 13 or Escape From New York. It doesn’t break the bank with escalating set-pieces, to the point where the character is lost amidst the explosions. Dredd is a character study, primarily, one fuelled by violence and action, and we can’t think of a better way to re-introduce this character to cinema audiences. I read somewhere that if they gross over $50 million in the US that it will be enough to get a sequel greenlit, which would involve the origins of the city, and if that did well the third would have to do with Death.

Collider's take: http://collider.com/dredd-review/179577/The director has designed a down-and-dirty future where nothing shines, everything is grimy, and life is cheap. Into this world he throws a memorable albeit simple protagonist whose very voice emanates ugly violence and wholesale slaughter.
Dredd swings between a single-minded drive to use your adrenal gland like a chew toy and a one-dimensional ploy to play into a shallow bloodlust. What it lacks in claustrophobia, a compelling plot, dangerous stakes, and a compelling antagonist, it makes up for with loud noises, blown-apart bodies, and a killer performance from Karl Urban. As far as The Raid comparisons, it's not like you need a PhD to set a story in a drug dealer's tower. I mean, I think Robocop 2 in 1990 had some sequences like that (I guess more of a drug manufacturing plant than a tower per se). I certainly liked The Raid, but it made $4.1M in an extremely limited domestic run ( http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=raid.htm), so I doubt the average filmgoer seeing Dredd will have ever even heard of The Raid, much less seen it. If there's a difference (for better or worse), the cops in The Raid were very much fragile/vulnerable, even the Super Duper Hero Cop. I don't get the impression Dredd and his cohort break much of a sweat.

Judging by the way re-makes are being done these days, it will be all action with crappy dialogue and little humour so it will "sell better" in the international market.

Well, much like 21 Jump Street, this show is going against expectations and getting pretty decent reviews. I'm hitting a matinee on the way home from work tonight...and i'm even paying a premium as it's only available in 3D at the theater I go to.
