Saw it this afternoon.  I was pleasantly surprised.  It felt like a fully realized series from the comics.  I could've done with a little less Paltrow, but that's a minor quibble.

The humor was well done, by the way.  The kid alone stole almost every scene he was in.

they're estimating $175 million in the US for this weekend, and about the same from international showings, to put it close to $700 million worldwide.

So $175m domestic plus ~$175m foreign is supposed to equal $700m?

I guess I'm also sorry to you, as I thought his low key delivery in response to Stark's anxiety ridden meltdowns and rapid fire quips was fantastic.  He was what Stark needed to bring him back down to earth.

fwiw, I found the kid alright. I mean, was he as annoying as Edward Furlong in T2? No. But I did find that part of the movie meandering at times. I think in essence the kid is there to try to humanize Stark a bit without turning Tony into a sentimental tub of goo. smile

I took my mom to see it Saturday at an AMC ETX screen. Now that IMAX is assigned/reserved seating (which I'm not usually crazy about), that's about the largest "non-reserved" seating screen at AMC multiplexes. The sound was over the top. Even the trailers were about to make us deaf. biggrin

She enjoyed it. I thought maybe she'd find it all too hard to follow, but she didn't seem to have any complaints. I actually enjoyed it more the second time. I guess scenes that struck me as meandering or "what's the point" on first view, somehow seemed to fit better on second viewing. I better understood where the plot pieces fit.

I still feel like the Maya Hansen character (Rebecca Hall, appealing in The Town) got such short thrift I could barely understand what she was up to. The movie's 2 hrs 20 mins though. I suspect maybe some scenes with her ended up on the cutting room floor.

Lastly, as far as the suits themselves, I found it
Spoiler for Hiden:
... more exciting when he actually has to be IN the suit to use it because there's more at stake.

While it certainly makes sense in this day of drone warfare/recon for him to be piloting stuff remotely, for me the charm of the movies/comics was always Stark being in the suit (or biologically combining with the suit as in the recent comics era), I felt a bit of disappointment when we see in some situations he's not actually IN the suit.
And I ultimately still don't understand Killian's motivation for some of the things he does.

But hey, it's up to $680 million+ worldwide now (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=ironman3.htm), so I suspect Kevin Feige and Disney are not worried about my nitpicks. smile

It will be interesting to see how Joss Whedon picks up from the conclusions of this, Thor 2 and Cap 2.

I thought it was amusing.  I also had no issues with the scenes in Tennessee with the kid, so you can use that as your measuring stick.

I honestly don't feel he is in any danger in the suit or out so it makes no difference to me.  He isn't going to die in these movies, so I feel no sense of danger even when he is in the suit.

I saw this yesterday and it made me realize that Tony Stark is more popular than Iron Man. What I mean by that is people would rather see Tony on-screen as himself rather than suited up. That's the opposite of what I want from the series because I personally don't find Tony Stark's character that funny - I like him, just not enough to watch a movie about him. That sentiment was embodied in the whole seen where Tony is infiltrating the Mandarin's mansion which I thought was really dumb. Iron Man just seemed like, to use Stark's own words, a "pussy" throughout the movie.

I think Stark is far more interesting than Iron Man.  And this movie understands that and works with it.  At the end of the day, the human element is what makes Iron Man work, not the CGI fights.  The whole point of the movie was to make audiences understand why Stark can be Iron Man.  He's ingenious, he won't give up, and he's flawed enough to make mistakes that bite him in the ass...which in turn gives him a chance to prove the first two items just listed.

FWIW I liked the Tennessee kid a lot, and got a big kick out of the post-credits scene. As for the film itself, I enjoyed it a lot, but it's a tier below Iron Man 1, which I just never get tired of.

I actually had more of a problem with the middle act than I did with act 3.

Spoiler for Hiden:
There was just way too long a stretch of Tony-only time, but then I guess that was the point of the story. I think the with-suit pacing would have been fine for me if his entry into Ben Kingsley's house had been in a real (but severely damaged) Iron Man suit with jury rigged gizmos attached, instead of simply it being Tony Stark with gizmos.

Question for folks who know the comic books:
Spoiler for Hiden:
Is Pepper turning into an action hero something that happens in the comic books? That part at the end where she saves the day seemed really out of place to me.

Voila! Hepcat nails it with this comment. This is exactly how I feel about the film, which I think it's the best out of the three. Robert Downey Jr was fantastic. The humor was excellent. In general, 'Iron Man 3' is a terrific movie.

Yeah last week right before Ironman 3 opened they were running a commercial touting Pain and Gain as the #1 box office movie in the country.  I found that kind of amusing.

yep, took me a minute to recognize the other guy involved too.  for some reason he looked a lot older.

saw this this evening, $4 for a 7pm show.  not sure how the heck this theater makes money; their concession stand is dirt cheap and there were maybe 6 other people in the theater.  Thought it was decent, but I have some quibbles I may post later once I go through all the spoilers.

So were all those suits based in the comics or just stuff they made for the movie? The giant hulking one was reminiscent of the original suit, but modernized.

I think some of them where based on the comics and others were just created for the movie.  of course there have been a tons of suits in the comics so it's hard to tell:

OK here's my 2 cents. I enjoyed the movie although not as much asybe first two.

I was sufficiently entertained and bought into the plot.

However what struck me about 1/2 way through the movie was the following: I couldn't shake the feeling that since the Avengers movie why can't he simply call for help? I mean whats the point of them all having their own movies now that we all know that they can do more as a group?

I guess in retrospect I didnt buy into the plot afterall ?

Well yeah, I thought the same thing, but the comics work the same way. Sometimes they just work on their own.

Maybe Captain America was off doing something top secret, Hulk was visiting his parents for the holidays and Black Widow and Hawkeye had already put a deposit on a B&B for that weekend.

this.

Spoiler for Hiden:
I can see why Thor wouldn't show up, but I had trouble accepting that SHIELD would not pop up at any given point.

also, what was up with that montage during the beginning of the end credits?  it felt out of place.

also, I'm not sure I liked how they:

Spoiler for Hiden:
marginalized the Mandarin.  considering the universe they're setting up they could have easily done the rings; hopefully at some point they'll bring in the true Mandarin.

I thought they were basically wrapping up the RDJ Iron Man movies by showing scenes from all 3. He'll be in Avengers 2, but seems unclear if he'll be in another standalone. The way they tied up the story gave that feeling.

I get the wrapping up bit, but it felt like something that had escaped from a 70's TV series.  as for Avengers 2, last I heard RDJ was 'likely' to sign, but his contract was only for 4 films and they're currently negotiating a new contract, so A2 could be a whole new Tony Stark.
