That gives me hope that they've found the right balance of serious action and self-effacing humor.  Pratt was an inspired choice for Peter Quill.  The guy is just incredibly likeable and brings with him a comedic pedigree that I think his character needs.

This just moved up the list of movies I really wanna see this year!

It reminds me of "The Watchmen" in that fans of the comics will like it but it makes little to no sense to someone who doesn't know about the comic.  That is fine except it isn't going to do well at the box office.

I'm guessing this will be an origin film so that folks learn about the characters.  If a film's success depended primarily on audiences being familiar with the story or the characters beforehand, there would be approximately 2 films made a year that could be called winners.

i know almost nothing of the group or individual heroes of Guardians, but I'm stoked.  I also think that the trailer was done well enough to bring in people who aren't interested directly in it.  It had good comedy, enough mystery and also showed some good action.

As an aside, Watchmen was hardly a flop.  It's still the seventh highest grossing R rated film in history for the U.S..  The fact that it didn't do better is due more to the fact that it was rated R and not because enough movie goers hadn't read the graphic novel.

I've been reading all of these comics:

Spoiler for Hiden:

I've only read most of the first column so far, but Peter Quill is not quite so comical, although he is wise-cracking. I have a lot more to read, though.

Ooh...thanks!  Time to put my Marvel Unlimited subscription to use tonight.

Man, I love that service.  If DC had one though, I'd be on it like white on rice.

Just watched the trailer.  Count me in the know next to nothing about the characters and very excited to see the movie camp.

That last group shot shows that they know what they're doing here.  Just perfect.

Also, is that Peter Serafinowicz in the background at the prison?

Yup.  His Fa'ad from Running Wilde is still one of the funniest characters to ever grace a (sadly short lived) sitcom.

That's cool.  Not everyone has the same tastes.

Just watched the trailer again and busted out laughing when Pratt's character is doing the old "mechanical middle finger" trick.  The sign below the blurred box on the monitor reads, alternately, "Obscene Gesture Imminent" and "Obscene Gesture Alert!".   icon_lol

Yeah even though its an old one,i laughed at that when he was saying that he had no idea 'that machine' was going to do that

Again like most of you guys,i have next to no knowledge about this comic(is that guy from the 80s then?,with the mechanical finger and the walkman...or did i miss it telling me in the trailer?) but loving that the makers have the balls to do stuff like this and not stick to the usual stuff (at least I grew up with),so i'm quite excited to see how this turns out

The movie is set in current times, if I'm not mistaken.  The Walkman that Star Lord gets all bent out of shape over represents his last connection to his lost homeworld, Earth.  Thus the rather extreme reaction to the guard playing with it.

This film features the Nova Corp so I hope they at least mention Richard Ryder.  I read the entire Nova run on the Marvel Unlimited app a while back and thoroughly enjoyed it.

If it's campy I might rent it. I didn't realize until I saw the trailer that it's a comedy...although I suppose the raccoon should have been a giveaway.

If it follows the comics it shouldn't be comedy. It's likely the same as the Avengers but in spaaaaace. Basically a not-so-serious action flick featuring a set of quirky characters that have to learn to work together as a team to stop the word/universe ending in catastrophe.

That said the trailer didn't do a lot for me and was bordering on Green Lantern trailer territory. Hopefully the future trailers will be a bit more in line with the comics vibe.

It's got a long way to go before it even gets close to green lantern territory.  It's best not to expect completely faithful movie adaptations from marvel.  That's not really their thing.  They get close, yes.  But when your source material has a habit of changing with every generation in order to match current sensibilities, it's tough to define "faithful".

It's not a comedy, it's actually part of the regular Marvel stories like Avengers.  Tony Stark is a funny guy too, he did a lot of humor in the Iron Man movies and they had some comedic bits, but I wouldn't call that a comedy either.

Im pretty sure I read somewhere that "Star Lord"  was taken from Earth in the 1980's and that theres going to be a quite few 80's references.  Did you notice the similarity between the first scene and Raiders of the Lost Ark?  It was intentional.

Agreed completely. My miniscule interest, due solely to Karen Gillan being in it, completely evaporated after watching that trailer.

It's always tough to integrate action into comedy and find the right balance, but the trailer gives me hope they've managed to pull it off.  I always use Big Trouble in Little China as my baseline for how it should be done.

Yeah, the Marvel live action film division is stomping all over Warner Bros..  However, the DC Animated division of Warner Bros has consistently put out films with better stories.  You'd think DC would find some way to capitalize on that.
