Watched 'Drive' last night and found it exhilarating, lyrical and exceptional! The movie is a neo-noir set in Los Angeles, and at times, it comes across as a dark fairy-tale. I thought the entire cast, from Ryan Gosling down, was phenomenal. And the soundtrack is fantastic! In my opinion, it's one of the best films of 2011. If you can't watch it while it's in theaters, definetely add it to your Netflix queue.

As mentioned earlier, I've been a fan of the director since his brilliant Pusher trilogy. Bronson just cemented his reputation as a great director. Drive put him on my "will see anything he does on sight" list. Other directors on that list include Guillermo Del Toro, Brad Bird, Christopher Nolan and Peter Jackson. So he's in good company.

Yeah, sounds about right - I havent seen Drive yet, but certainly will, and yes, Pusher is awesome. Fun fact - it will be made into an american movie in 2012, with all new actors except for Milo who will still be Milo :-) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1921070/

Finally caught this on DVD, and I thought it was tremendous. I can, though, see how not everyone would find the sometimes "internalized" acting to their tastes, or the almost slasher-movie intensity of the brief geysers of violence. I loved how the chase scenes were handled. After watching 10,000 car chase scenes, it's refreshing to see a movie trying to tackle them in a different way without resorting (as far as I can tell?) to digital effects. It doesn't feel like a shoestring ($15 million) budget movie. $35M box office doesn't seem like much but any director that can do a $15M thriller that does $35M will probably catch Hollywood's eye ( http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=drive2011.htm), this being an indy production. Although the DVD has some interesting interview featurettes, none has any thoughts from Ryan Gosling (presumably he was busy). I would've liked to know more about his thoughts on his "acting choices" in this, which were pretty cool. And I had no idea Carey Mulligan is British (she has a very prominent British accent in the interviews), or that the script originally called for a Latina actress in the role (Mulligan's agent asked the director to at least give her an audition), so I learned quite a bit from the DVD extras.

The car chase was tactical in nature. Never thought I'd say that about a car chase.

I also finally got to watch this on BR and really enjoyed it. There were a lot of great actors in it, and I really appreciated the almost 60's/70's style of minimalist dialog from Gosling. The car chases were great, but I'm not as much of a fan of the quick and brutal violence. It works well for the characters and story, just not so much for me.

the gf has been pushing me to watch this for a while now, so i did last night... this was just after me seeing _Heat_ and _Thief_ for the first time over the past two weeks, so the spectre of Michael Mann loomed heavily over everything... (she had said that this would just be the same movie again, half-jokingly)
i enjoyed the pacing of it in the first half - there were some scenes where the silences were metronomic and perfectly 'tapped' out. for me, however, the over-the-top violence (even with CGI blood) and simple ending pushed the movie into Sillytown and heavily brought down my estimation of it.

We watched it last night. I wasn't expecting the pacing. I enjoyed it for the most part, but there was a section in the middle where it felt a little aimless before getting back on track. I also found the music to be somewhat jarring, especially during one of the more climactic moments. For the most part, the music seemed curious (and maybe amusing), but it took me out of the film for that section.
The violence was shocking, for sure, but it didn't seem out of place.
I liked all of the performances. Gosling is an odd duck to me. He looks like a little kid at times and sometimes a bit of a dweeb, but he has this sex appeal that's just odd to me. Good actor, though. I enjoyed the fact that he essentially had two lines for the first twenty minutes of the movie, but you could see that something was going on in there.
The first sequence is really great.
My wife found the pacing off-putting. She's not sure she enjoyed it. She was mostly just waiting for Downton Abbey to start.

CGI blood? I don't think there is any CGI in the film.
