Now that looks like an interesting and unique take on the aliens-attack-earth genre.  Finally something different.

While it looks kinda fun,  I really hope its just because its a teaser trailer, that you can actually see the wires lifting one of cowboys out of the saddle...

That might be one of the only movies with a "Vs." in the title that I'll go to theaters to see. Olivia Wilde seems to be showing up in a lot more movies now too, so I don't miss her leaving House.

Some nice stills at Hero Complex (might be old ones, dunno):
http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2010/11/17/cowboys-aliens-trailer-310-to-yoda/

While I'm hopeful about C vs. A, all I could think was "OMG that Gizmodo clown liked the horrific Wild, Wild West movie, the one that made Ross Martin spin in his grave like a top and made Robert Conrad apoplectic?"   saywhat There's a reason we don't have to worry about a sequel to that wreck.

I was heartened back at Comic-Con that director Favreau said he wanted very much to get the charming, rogue-ish Harrison Ford of Raiders, Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back back on screen. In a lot of movies the last decade or so Ford's just come across as cranky and irritable -- I guess he was always like that on screen, but usually there was some sense of fun amongst the crankiness. I hope this film restores some of that -- it was a good sign Ford was willing to attend Comic-Con and was in good spirits.

Also heartening Favreau doesn't have to insert references to The Avengers.  smirk

Ford's gotten good notices for his role in Morning Glory although, guess what, he plays a cranky guy in it. But apparently he's at least genuinely funny and appealing doing so. Maybe this is his second wind. icon_smile

Since it's written by the ubiquitous Kurtzman and Orci (or is it Orci and Kurtzman)-- when do those guys have time to breathe? -- and Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof (who co-wrote Star Trek with the dynamic duo), you can either roll your eyes (OMG it's by the Transformers and Star Trek writers - ew!) or get excited about it (OMG it's by the Transformers and Star Trek writers-oh!).

Actually I don't think Lindelof wasn't involved with Transformers, so I tend to think he's the reason why I liked ST and find the Transformers generally repellent. But I never really got into Lost, so I can't explain the attraction.   icon_razz

Also if you liked The Shield on TV, Walt Goggins has a role in this; and Sam Rockwell (who was in Iron Man 2) is always memorable.

There's a nice piece at something called Screen Rant, which supposedly got to view about 40 minutes of early footage (with studio cooperation):
http://screenrant.com/cowboys-and-aliens-trailer-poster-rothc-87747/
Quote
In addition to an advance look at the trailer, we were also given the opportunity to view the the very early, work-in-progress, first act of the film, and will be bringing you a full report on our edit bay visit in the coming weeks.

What we are able to report now is that the trailer that you see here is highly reflective of the extended footage we’ve seen from the film. There is always the danger of misleading a film’s audience with an deceptive marketing campaign. Thankfully, that’s not the case with Cowboys & Aliens.

Favreau himself reflects “what I like about it as a filmmaker, is that it feels like they are selling the same movie that we’re making.” He goes on to say that this trailer encapsulates “the tone of the first act of the movie, and as we get deeper, and as more trailers come out – more will be revealed.”

Hero Complex (LA Times blog) had a nice interview with the "everywhere" Kurtzman & Orci:
http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2010/11/23/cowboys-aliens-challenge-putting-a-new-hat-on-icon-harrison-ford/
Quote
GB: I know the big movies that both of you grew up loving, and Harrison Ford is in a good number of them. What was it like working with him, and did it meet your expectations?

RO: No it didn’t meet expectations because you expect the worst.  So when you actually meet the man and he’s cooler than Han Solo and Indiana Jones put together, it’s kind of shocking. It’s like stepping into one of your dreams, really. I dreamed I met Harrison Ford and I made a movie with him. That’s how it feels. And you know, that’s really Harrison you see riding full tilt on that horse. Just to see him live in genuine action is really priceless.

AK: Harrison carries with him the wisdom of working with the best storytellers in the world. So, aside from getting to work with a childhood hero, he also was extremely helpful in the choices we were making on the script. He really understood the tone. He really understood how to play his character and the emotional arc — when to be gruff and when to let the light in. He was amazing.

We spent a month and a half with him and Daniel Craig and Olivia Wilde just sitting in a  room and talking over scenes again and again and again. That was right before we started shooting. That was like a dream experience on every possible level. Everyone understood the movie we needed to make. Harrison and Daniel were both protective of their characters in the right way but extremely generous about saying, “What does the movie need?” And that allowed us to find the best version of the movie. I hope.

Heh, that was my first thought as well.

Honestly, I would bet on this movie being mediocre at best.  It will have its fans but I don't think it will turn out all that good.

When my wife and I finally went to see The Deathly Hallows, Cowboys and Aliens was one of the trailers.  Having already seen the trailer and been discussing the film on GamingTrend, I knew exactly what to expect.  I didn't say anything to my wife when it started, and her eyes lit up when she first saw Daniel Craig and then Harrison Ford.  And then the alien ships showed up.  Her expression went from Fabulous to  icon_eek, and when it was over she slowly turned to me and said, "I don't think I was ready for that."   icon_lol

But it certainly piqued her interest.  At least it can't be worse than Wild Wild West.

Update and interview w/ Favreau at EW:
http://insidemovies.ew.com/2011/02/07/exclusive-cowboys-aliens-preview/
Quote
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: People will be dissecting these 30-second trailers, so tell us up front — what are we not seeing?
JON FAVREAU: We haven’t shown any of the aliens. We want to hold that back. And all the images we’re showing are from the beginning, up to the first half of the film. We’re not showing a lot of where it goes. The first teaser was showing the opening of the film and a little of the setup. This one is showing more of the sense of adventure as things unfold. We’re just trying to get people’s feet wet.

Chatty Hero Complex interview w/ Harrison Ford:
http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2011/04/25/cowboys-aliens-star-harrison-ford-most-special-effects-films-are-soulless-now/
Quote
“The thing I was most curious about coming in was tone,” Ford said as he sweated beneath his wool period-piece costume on the New Mexico set. “You don’t get it off the page. They’re just words, so we dug in for almost two months of work on the script in these story conferences trying to define the character and the lines and the tone. The trick of this thing and the beauty of this thing is that it’s a cowboy movie first and then stuff happens. Even after stuff happens it doesn’t change — it hasn’t suddenly changed into another kind of movie. It’s still a cowboy movie. And that’s what’s incredible about it because nobody has done that before, that’s new territory.”
...
“I think what a lot of action movies lose these days, especially the ones that deal with fantasy, is you stop caring at some point because you’ve lost human scale,” Ford said. “With the CGI, suddenly there’s a thousand enemies instead of six – the army goes off into the horizon. You don’t need that. The audience loses its relationship with the threat on the screen. That’s something that’s consistently happening and it makes these movies like video games and that’s a soulless enterprise. It’s all kinetics without emotion. I don’t have time for that.”
The latter reminds me of Lucas turning a dozen Stormtroopers into a hundred in the CGI'd re-release of Star Wars in that scene where Han and Chewie are running for their lives in the Death Star. Just because you can do something with FX doesn't mean you should or that it adds anything to the movie. Lets see if Cowboys & Aliens manages to remember that, eh?  icon_smile

I just want it to be entertaining enough for me to forgive Harrison for...

Lets just say almost his entire imdb listing (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000148/) between 1998 and 2010. I thought he was fine in Indy 4, no matter how many times the film as a whole might make your eyes roll. At some point he and his agents seemed to lose the ability to pick decent scripts, or studios just didn't know what to do with an aging star any more.

If I already pretty much said this, sorry to beat the same drum. Although I'm rooting for this (July 29), I'm also rooting for Captain America (July 22), and I hope the two films don't end up cannibalizing each other at the box office.

Hey, I noticed a magazine called "Cowboys & Indians" (the ad-editorial ratio is ridiculous, like 80%-20%, but I guess it's a living, right?) at Borders today with a huuuuge spread about the "Cowboys and Aliens" movies, and numerous sidebars, including an interview with the stunt coordinator, who did many of Raiders of the Lost Ark's most memorable stunts back in '81.

You can read the main article at its web site, but the print edition has a lot more stuff. Ultimately I didn't buy it cause most of the mag didn't interest me and like I said, the ad ratio is insane.

Cowboys & Aliens (by Cowboys & Indians Magazine)
http://www.cowboysindians.com/art-entertainment/tv-film/2011/07/cowboys-and-aliens.jsp
Quote
Based on the 2006 graphic novel created by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, Cowboys & Aliens — set to open July 29 in theaters and drive-ins everywhere — spins a fanciful tale set in the New Mexico Territory of 1875. The desert town of Absolution is controlled by Col. Woodrow Dolarhyde (Ford), a grizzled tyrant who rules with a whim of iron, and whose spoiled son (Paul Dano of There Will Be Blood) is repeatedly at loggerheads with the local sheriff (Keith Carradine). One day, a stranger (Craig) with no memory of his past wanders into Absolution. At first, the only clue to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles his wrist. But then someone identifies him as a notorious outlaw, and he winds up inside the local jail.

Which, of course, places him in the right place at the right time to join forces with the sheriff, Col. Dolarhyde, other townspeople, and several Apache warriors from the surrounding area when marauding extraterrestrials drop in for a hunting party.

“What we’ve done,” says coscreenwriter Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek [2009], Mission: Impossible III), “is to essentially set up this very serious, very stark, very dangerous world with all the conventions that apply to a traditional western. And into the middle of that world, we drop aliens — and then have people react the way people in that world would have reacted.”
The cast includes Keith Carradine and John Wayne's grandson, Brendan Wayne. Keith's dad John, and Wayne's famous father co-starred in Stagecoach early in Wayne's career (1939) and late in The Shootist (1976).
