it's coming, but not until next year  crybaby  here's hoping they hit another homerun with the series like they did with Band of Brothers.

Yeah, what he said.  Hopefully they don't blow it.  Band of Brothers will be an extremely tough act to follow.

I'm waiting for the inevitable complaints like:

"why are they always showing landing sequences under fire? Didn't we get enough of this in Saving Private Ryan?"

Its the Pacific! Almost all land campaigns were to seize back islands by force.

or

"Wait, why are the marines using bolt-action rifles? That can't be right, they should be using M-1 garands!"

The Corps did not adopt the Garand until 1941. When Marines fought at Guadalcanal, most of them carried Springfield rifles. By early 1943, the Corps began replacing Springfields with Garands.

Even so, many Marines and soldiers used their Springfields until late in the war. Photographs show infantrymen with Springfields as late as 1944.

I have "With the Old Breed" but have not yet read it. I do know it is supposed to be a great book written by a guy who fought on several islands.

I'm still very worried that this miniseries will never be able to live up to the standards set by BoB simply because this one isn't a true story (only loosely based on actual events, with fictional characters). It's harder to relate to a war movie when you know the particular event you're watching didn't really happen that way in the real world, and that a person you're supposed to care for never existed in the first place.

I started reading "With the Old Breed" today and I can see that a great show could be made from it. If you watched the Burns WW2 series he spent alot of time using Sledge and his book to describe the pacific war.

Fictional characters?  Are you sure?  I thought the miniseries was based on Gene Sledge, Robert Leckie, and John Basilone - the first two wrote books based on their war experiences, and the third had a book written about him...

that looks absolutely fan-fucking-tastic

with all the special effects, all the action and even the script...i know it will be the cast that will really set this aside, like in Band Of Brothers and i have no doubt that is exactly what will happen again

The GF and I are watching Band of Brothers right now - awesome show - first time for her, and she's stunned by each episode.

I'll definitely get this, when it arrives in some form I can watch, either on tv or dvd.

Fun fact: When I was in the army in 91, we used Garand rifles....sigh

When I was in the Navy (same time period) we used M14's and 1911's.

Some of our Colt 1911's were so old and worn they would launch the slide downrange during use.

Nice.  I seem to recall a show that indicated a quick hand could remove the slide from a 1911 even when it was being pointed at you.

Heh, I was a royal engineer, and some of the bridges we used were stuff the danish military had bought the US after the 2nd worldwar :-D

Its kinda fun to watch a show like Band of Brothers and see that its basically the same equipment one self used...

My old man was a signalman on a tanker in the Pacific. Had a big target painted on his back, sailing in and out of Middle East ports. He got a purple heart by way of accidentally injuring himself, but it will be awhile before we see a miniseries about supply convoys.

My maternal grandfather was a Marine and survived five separate Pacific campaigns including Guadalcanal.

It's too bad he died before I was old enough to really appreciate what he did and to ask him about it.

My paternal grandfather was a machinist's mate in the Navy during the war.  Unfortunately, he didn't survive his best friend being drunk and wanting to see how fast his new car would go.  Neither did his best friend.  The third friend in the back seat was hospitalized and told the police that my grandfather repeatedly to stop the car and let him out.  This would have been ~1950.  My father was two years old at the time.

It really made that whole childhood arguing tactic of "I'll bet your Dad never..." backfire rather badly.   Needless to say, I never tried that one again...  icon_cry

Oh, and for the "shell fragment" thing, I stole that from a MASH episode.

I work with a guy whose dad was in the 101st Airborne.  He knew Winters and most of the rest.  He missed Bastogne but did the D-Day and Arnhem jumps.  My friend says his dad always felt he had let the unit down by not being at the Bulge.  My friend got his dad a pair of original jump boots about a year before he died...and he was buried in them.

If you are interested in the Pacific War I highly recommend reading or listening to Sea of Thunder about Leyte...outstanding book
