Anderson knows that without Whedon (who is gearing up to direct “The Avengers” for Marvel Studios), the most devoted fans of the old series will be keeping a skeptical eye on this nascent revival — and sharpening their wooden stakes. Anderson, who studied theater at Northwestern and moved to Los Angeles in 2003, said she will take the touchstones of the Whedon world but frame them in “a new story” that is very much of the moment. She cited Christopher Nolan’s revival of Batman as a supreme example of how a familiar character and revered mythology can be brought to the big screen with a vital new vision.

And yes, that's Whit Anderson the writer, not the new actress to portray Buffy.

"This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths—just because they can't think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my Avengers idea that I made up myself.

Obviously I have strong, mixed emotions about something like this. My first reaction upon hearing who was writing it was, "Whit Stillman AND Wes Anderson?  This is gonna be the most sardonically adorable movie EVER."  Apparently I was misinformed. Then I thought, "I'll make a mint!  This is worth more than all my Toy Story residuals combined!" Apparently I am seldom informed of anything. And possibly a little slow. But seriously, are vampires even popular any more?

I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death.  But, you know, AFTER.  I don't love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I'm also well aware that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly. I can't wish people who are passionate about my little myth ill. I can, however, take this time to announce that I'm making a Batman movie.  Because there's a franchise that truly needs updating. So look for The Dark Knight Rises Way Earlier Than That Other One And Also More Cheaply And In Toronto, rebooting into a theater near you.

How can you not love Joss Whedon.  Awesome.  No one else's Buffy will even be close.  What's next, a Firefly Reboot?

Why do they need to reboot? Why not take the buffyverse and expand on the story? Set it in like, florida or something - grab a new / different slayer (Didn't buffy train 20 or so in season 7?) and tell THAT story. You can tell stories within the same world without having to destroy everything that has already been built.  Buffy (the character) had an ending - but the whole world doesn't need to be reset.

But I guess Felicia Day the Vampire Slayer just doesn't have the same ring to it...

Because it sells well.  In the end these corporations do not do this stuff because they hate us, or even because they like us.  They care about profit and it makes higher profit to do a reboot.  As long as "fans" go see it - with the typical defense of "it is just a popcorn movie", or "I don't have to think about every movie"  - they will make it because they only care about one thing, one, profit.

I laughed more times in that Whedon blurb than I did through all of the original movie.  Have to love him (Mo, get on board...it's not the Brits - they love Buffy, from what I've heard).

This thing will be hard to swallow, but I won't give up on it entirely, as it seems to be from someone who cares, at least.  I wouldn't say I'm excited, though.

I remember watching the original movie in a theater in Berkeley - I must've been 12 or 13 - and just mildly liking it. I didn't think it anything special but I did like K. Swanson well enough.

The series, however, was awesome. I really enjoyed the shows, the story arcs, the characters, the Slayer mythos. I didn't know anyone else who did though (though now that I think about it, the idea of talking about a tv show just wasn't something that my peers did. They'd laugh at a joke or admire an actress, but discuss an episode's allusions or insider joke? No way) except for an English teacher in the ninth grade with whom I'd spent my free study periods discussing Xander's Everyman status or the nature of vampires.

I'd watch a reboot movie but I'm skeptical: nowadays vampires are the good guys and the romance element would likely be emphasized whereas I'm more of a traditionalist like Xander: "I'm going to take a stand and say vampires are bad". That used to be a non-controversial viewpoint.
