Reading these threads, I keep seeing the same questions asked over and over, so why not. Feel free to add to this, or to make corrections. This is intended to help newbies here know what's going on, without having to read 500+ posts in the new threads smile

Q: What the heck is going on with GoneGold?

A: Right now, not much is known. It has been established that GG's account was terminated by it's host on October 5th, 2004. We do know that the outage is *not* due to technical reasons. We only know that it's "due to something other than that".  Two people have called and confirmed GG's shutdown.

Q: Is Rich OK?

A: also unknown. as of this writing, Rich has not been in contact with anyone, including those at the admin level. GG admins and mods will update us as soon as they know anything. Admin Andy has some insight, but as of now is unable to expound on it.

Q: Has anyone tried to call Rich?

A: Yes, it is known that one person has tried, and was hung up on. However, it is NOT known if it was Rich's current number, or his old number.

Q: Is ConsoleGold our new "home"?

A: If GG is indeed down for good, the good people of CG have offered this forum as a new home for GG refugees who wish to stay in touch and continue to meet.  Whether or not this stays our new home, remains to be seen. Others have offered bandwidth and time to establish a new forum, if desired.

Q: But CG has no PC forum. I don't feel "right" here.

A: Ron Burke (aka Knightshade Dragon), CG's webmaster, has stated repeatedly that he wishes to accomodate PC gamers here, and wants people to know that PC gamers ARE welcome here. If this becomes GG'ers new home, he will expand the forums to include PC gaming topics, and possibly even broaden the scope of the entire site to include PC Games. (correct me if I'm wrong on that,  Ron)

Q: These light colors hurt my eyes! Will the familiar GG 'black and gold' color scheme be available?

A: a black & gold color scheme is now available. Click on Profile, and then under 'Board Style', choose 'subBlack'

Q: What about the massive repository of information on GG? are we going to lose all that data, including trading records?

A: This is a main area of concern. Blackhawk, Peacedog, etc, have said that things don't look too bad in that department. It is hoped that much can be recovered.  GG trading records have been saved, but might be missing some recent activity.

Q: If we stay, will CG provide a Politics and Religion discussion area?

A: This is a 'wait and see' deal.

Thanks for doing that Jeff, it is appreciated!

(Cross posted for ease of use)

Not to worry folks, the landscape will change and there will be a place for PC discussions and a place for console discussions.  There are plans to ADD PC, not to let PC take over.  I'll let a few cats out of the bag, all of which are based on GG not coming back of course:

1.) Expand the forums into pretty much what GG had and seperate consoles and PC.  We need to evaluate some forums like R&P (it seems religion was the big offender for most people...maybe we trial run without religion?)
2.) Expand our backend database to encompass PC. (Have you guys looked at OUR Gold Guide?)  Take a sample: http://www.consolegold.com/GameInfo/game/1352.html
3.) (still in the thought bubble stage, need to discuss with Eldon) Work on filtering system to filter news for PC or the various consoles
4.) Hire staff to cover PC gaming news in a way it hasn't been covered on the front page of GG for a long long time.
5.) Restart PC reviews
6.) Restart PC previews

If we do that, we'll have a lot of work ahead of us, but I think it'll pay off in the long run.

Just to clarify what I have, I keep a backup of all of the trading records every time I update them.  I hadn't updated since the most recent list went up, so I am missing about the two and a half most recent pages - pretty much all of the trades since the start of September.  Everything prior to that is complete and ready to be posted in a new home.

The ELOG was not archived, although every year about October we lock it and start a new one to weed out the chaff anyway.  Look at this as a chance to do just that.

*nods*  I've been looking to automate that process into our database system for a long long time as well Blackhawk.  If this goes long term, your job could become a lot easier.

I'd be willing to help out with PC News for the front page Ron, if Gone Gold has indeed gone away for good...

I've been longing for a site like the old Gone Gold and would love to be apart of making that happen!

A trial run without religion is fine by me.  There were rarely any postings on religion in the Religion and Politics forum anyway, unless the writings of Daniel Quinn count as a religion in the way that Marx does for some people.

You know who you are!

Edit: The messiah's name is Daniel, not Robert.

If that's indeed what going to happen if the death of GG is indded permanent, Ron, that would be really awesome of you. Though "Console Gold" would no longer be appropiate, would it?

A suggestion/idea (don't want to step on any toes mind): maybe keep this forum as it is, and have a second forum (not necessarily using your bandwidth), a Gone Gold forum reconstructed from what we can get from the database (even if it is a bit old), and the two forums can cross-link or something.

Yeah, that's just me wanting to have the new home as close as possible to the old. slywink

Well its been a long time since I stopped by these boards-purely because I got caught up in other things of course-but I am happy to be back now if GG is indeed dead. What a suprising turn of events, eh?

Well, Dictionary.com defines a console as "The operator's station of a mainframe" so I don't know that its too out of the ordinary.  I don't think we'll be re-inventing the wheel on that subject.

Besides, the developers and publishers I deal with have long since known that we cover PC stuff here in the forums.  This would just be an expansion on that.

You know, Console Gold may not be "appropriate" for a site that deals with PC games, but Gone Gold didn't really seem appropriate for a site that hasn't had information on games going gold, for what, 3 years?

Knightshade Dragon busted his ass for at least 2 years now to get Console Gold independant and up and running. He should proudly display that name and keep it alive.

You go girl!

Agreed.  If it comes to that, I would certainly appreciate KD adding some GoneGolder support to his site (PC forums, etc), but it isn't appropriate to have him turn his site into Gone Gold MKII.

Its not the locations so much as it is the people........

Glad I found out  about this site(by accident).

I've developed a trust for alot of the people from GG forums and I'm sure it will continue here or where-ever.

"The Band of Gypsys".....

P.S. I've posted on GG-Forums as Gollum for a long time now but feel like I've "out-grown" that handle...I'll post as Osprey a.k.a. Gollum for a while then drop Gollum for good...baaad little smeagol that he isssss anyway..

Nobody is holding anyone here.  If you want to go to QuarterToThree, feel free.  I wouldn't expect them to change anything to fit what you want though.

At first I was worried, but now I am actually very happy to not have to worry about checking two forums. I think that this will become more than adequate for everyone

I vote to stay here if GG is gone.  If we start to splinter off into different forums then it will become a permanent break and the main gonegold community will cease to exist.

Everything that has happened seems to point to a bad end for GG.  The account terminated, the mods know nothing, no emails from the big boss, hung up on from the phone number and no news after days of waiting.  Even when it was bad it wasn't this bad.

Hell, someone could always grab the domain next year and establish the forums again when it expires next year...better some of us than a big site (gamespy, ign, etc) grabbing it for the name recoqnization and saved favorite listings.

That about sums up my thoughts as well.  I wouldn't want this site to morph into GG 2.0.  However, there are a lot of folks here that I enjoy discussing pc games, hardware, etc with (as well as other random stuff, which is mostly covered as Off Topic) and it would be great to have a few forums in which to do that, if that ends up being appropriate.  And if I end up succumbing to the Console Gold effect and buying more Xbox games, well...  I can live with that risk.

I also want to say I really like this forum software, lots of nice little features.  I did lurk here a bit (note my reg. date) and browse the rest of the site when I was on Xbox gaming sprees, but didn't post much until this weekend.

I won't let that happen.  I'm sure others would join me in making sure that didn't happen as well.

I'd like to echo the thanks to Knightshade and the gang for allowing this, truly a grand gesture.

Just a couple of thoughts:

1. If GG dies, I'd really be interested in helping get the PC reviews up and running.

2. As one of the biggest anti-R&P people around back during the forum split, it may surprise you to hear me say that if this does become the "new" GG, I HIGHLY recommend a separate R&P forum. The reason being, you're not going to stop people from talking politics so you either stick it in its own forum or you WILL see it in the Off Topic area sooner or later. My complaints about the original R&P forum were more behind the way in which it was implemented and the lack of resolution to some serious behavioral problems. The former wouldn't be an issue here, and the latter - well, we've learned to deal with it.  smile

3. I agree with others' sentiments that I don't want to feel like I'm intruding on another established site. I have no problem making CG our new permanent home ONLY if Knightshade and the rest of the CG community extend the offer. Otherwise, let's make a new site and no hard feelings.

Ron has gone out of his way to show you guys that you are welcome here.  If there hadn't been part of GG, I would have never been a part of CG, and I still went to the GG forums, although I didn't participate that much.

Personally, I think it's great to see the activity on the site here.  I don't think that we have to worry at all about bandwidth issues.

I think of this site as a gaming site.  Yes, it does cater towards the console side of things.  However, we still do make posts about PC gaming, and play PC games.  Ron has had plans on moving towards doing PC information, but we didn't want to bite the hand that feeds us, so to speak.  However, the recent events have kind of forced the issue.

Changes will be made to fit the community, with some discression.  However, they will be made quickly.  Sit down, stay a while.  Take a load off of your feet and shoot the breeze.  We aren't going anywhere, and although the setting isn't as familiar, I'm sure that the feeling of home will surely come.

Another vote to stay here if GG is truly dead. I don't really expect a lot of big changes though; just throw in a PC Gaming forum and I'll be happy like a pig in doo-doo.

I'd also like to volunteer my services to help getting a PC section together on the site, whether it be searching for sites, writing previews, etc.

Hit your profile and select subBlack.  It isn't classic GG, but that was intentional.  This is beta and some stuff hasn't be implemented.  Drop your feedback in here and be honest but constructive please.

Yep; that's about the only problem I've found with SubBlack so far--links are not distinguishable from normal text.
